Turning a complex source of information presented from specialists in a specific field into a news or media article that is understandable and interesting for a general audience can be disastrous if the new article expands the truth or twists the findings from the original complex source. In the case of psychology, news articles published on the internet or in the newspapers can take the complex source of information from an academic article, such as a peer-reviewed journal, and reflect the findings from the academic journal accurately, somewhat skewed or completely inaccurate. These articles about psychology that tailor more to gaining the interest from readers who may not specialize in the topic being discussed are called pop-psychology …show more content…
Both articles appear to state that being very preterm and/or with a very low birth is negative on the personalities of individuals affected at birth. The study by researchers Eryigit-Madzwamuse et al. (2015) has discovered that those individuals born either prematurely or with a very low birth weight were more likely to score higher on tests evaluating the personality characteristics, such as being easily worried, less socially engaged and lacking communication skills, when compared to their cohorts who were born mature. The individuals who scored high on the personality characteristics mentioned were then identified as someone with a risk of having a socially withdrawn personality. By having this kind of personality, the pop-psychology article draws the conclusion that those individuals will struggle more in life, especially when it comes to higher academics, career and relationships (O'Dowd, 2015). Both articles mention how these social personality characteristics can negatively affect the various stages of life, like adolescents, for these very preterm and/or very low birth weight individuals. For instance, when compared to individuals who were born mature, the preterm and/or very low birthweight individuals were linked more closely with being bullied and having very few friends during the childhood and adolescent …show more content…
As an overview, the peer-reviewed article explains how the socially withdrawn personality can be complex in understanding since there are many influences and factors that can play a role. These influences and factors on the individual’s personality can include that of variations in the brain structure, and genetic and environmental influences (Eryigit-Madzwamuse et al., 2015). According to Eryigit-Madzwamuse et al. (2015), the strongest reason for the withdrawn personality in very preterm and/or very low birth weight individuals appears to come from the variations in brain structure and functioning due to the brain development being very underdeveloped due to the early birth. The parts of the brain affected the most due to the early birth and/or low birth weight include the parts that control social skills and understanding, such as in the fontal cortex and disturbances in myelination (Eryigit-Madzwamuse et al., 2015). In the pop-psychology article by O'Dowd, the author summarizes the other two important influences that may play a role on the withdrawn personalities of those individuals who were very preterm and/or had a very low birth weight. The influences in question include parents being very concerned
The social developments allow the family to have a base of self-esteem with confidence and create stronger relationship bonds with others. Also infants can be shy to talk to other people such as strangers they haven’t seen
Abnormal Psychology Abnormal psychology in the area within psychology that is focused on maladaptive behavior-its causes, consequences, and treatment. Abnormal psychology deals with how it feels to be different, the meanings the get attached to being different, and how society deals with people whom it considers to be different. The spectrum of differences is wide, ranging from reality defying delusions and severe debilitations to worries and behavioral quirks that we would be better off not having but do not significantly interfere with our daily lives. An example of the milder end of the spectrum is a man who was an eminently successful district attorney, was elected governor of New York on three occasions, and was almost elected president of the United States in 1948. This man, Thomas E. Dewy, reached the pinnacle of success, displaying such qualities as rectitude, efficiency, precision, and nearly limitless capacity for hard work.

...an infant is living in, and how he or she would get treat in the first three years, would get effect on his or her behavior. “ Babies’ brains are searching for clues about the world that they are entering, trying to predict what settings will best adapt them to the life ahead” (Patty 127). When the baby does not see any care, any kind of emotion in its life, they would grow up as an unemotional person, because the person’s brain did not process the steps of learning empathy in its life. “A baby is born with just one suite of genes. If they can produce only one pattern of responses, that pattern could turn out to be fatally maladaptive” (Patty 128). The baby is capable of learning whatever the environment is giving him to learn. Children may seem they don’t understand everything that goes around him or her, but it’s from that children will understand how to behave.
Based on the biological theory, humans are born with a temperament and that temperament can be genetically passed down from generation to generation. According to Lambertini, Chen, and Nomura (2015), the maternal psychological stress in pregnancy or MPSP plays a role in what that baby’s temperament will be like when they are born. What they discovered in their
My choice of research was in the play behaviors of children as well as aggression. Breaking the topic down more, behavior relates to the psychology and the psyche of each individual. The definition of psychology is “science of mind and behavior” (Clavijo, 2013). After reading the article by Clavijo, I have realized that psychology can be defined in three ways such as the study of the mind, the study of behavior, and the study of the mind and behavior. In the text “The Developing Person” by Berger, behavior is learned through social learning. Children learn different behaviors through the observation of others, others being children and adults. Different people have affects on a child’s life that can affect their behavior. A child’s behavior is heavily influenced by their parents. A son may speak aggressively and without respect towards his mother because this is the way that his father speaks to her therefore he feels that is how to communicate with his mother (Berger, 200, 2012). Moving into play behaviors, children learn from other children in how to play. Most believe cognitive growth relies on child’s play time. Vygotsky and Piaget both believe that when children play it is beneficial, but according to Vygotsky, playing enables a child to think outside the box and create their own meaning from objects, using their imagination. Piaget believes that child benefit from playing together because children and sharing their knowledge and making it more concrete ideas and thoughts. There are four stages of plays, with the fourth stage being the highest most complicated play which consists of rules and guidelines for the game. The lowest level or play would be functional play being infants shaking rattles, clapping their hands, or blow...
Experts believe that heredity and prenatal maternal factors are connected with Avoidant Personality Disorder. There is scientific evidence that proves that a child that lives in a timid environment in infancy is prone to develop Avoidant Personality Disorder later in life (Kantor). Another important factor that contributes to the development of Avoidant Personality Disorder is parental rejection. Parental rejection can destroy a child’s optimism, leaving them with feelings of social isolation. A common question that a rejected child might ask would be, for instance, “If my parents won’t accept me, then who will?”
My paper is based on an article from the text’s web site (chapter 9) entitled “Lack of sleep ages body’s systems.” The basic claim of the article is that sleep deprivation has various harmful effects on the body. The reported effects include decreased ability to metabolize glucose (similar to what occurs in diabetes) and increased levels of cortisol (a stress hormone involved in memory and regulation of blood sugar levels). The article also briefly alludes (in the quote at the bottom of page 1) to unspecified changes in brain and immune functioning with sleep deprivation.
Bio-Psychologists study the principles of biology as it relates to the comprehension of psychology in the field neuroscience that underlies ones emotions, ideology, and actions (Brittanica). Based upon the conduction of research, the relationship between the brain and ones behavior extends to the physiological process in one’s intellect. Scientists are cognizant that neurotransmitters function as a significant role in mood regulation and other aspects of psychological problems including depression and anxiety. A biological perspective are relevant to psychology in three techniques including: the comparative method, physiology, and the investigation of inheritance (Saul Mc. Leod).
Psychology is the investigation of the mind and how it processes and directs our thoughts, actions and conceptions. However, in 1879 Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig in Germany. Nevertheless, the origins of psychology go all the way back thousands of years starting with the early Greeks. This foundation is closely connected to biology and philosophy; and especially the subfields of physiology which is the study of the roles of living things and epistemology, which is the study of comprehension and how we understand what we have learned. The connection to physiology and epistemology is often viewed as psychology, which is the hybrid offspring of those two fields of investigation.
I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.
“New research suggests the seeds of psychological problems are planted well before birth. (Weir, 2012)” With that, some cases are genetical or coming from the parentals. It also includes the events when external factors affect the mother when the baby was still inside.
Secondly, late pregnancy can bring many serious psychosocial issues to the mother and the baby. When women get pregnant at late age they may get overwe...
In this article, there was a study that looked at the type and stability of temperament profiles in toddlers and if positive or negative parenting has any contributions to that. 96 mothers and their children ages 2-4 participated in a latent profile analysis, where mothers rated four times throughout that year there activity level, sociability and anger proneness. There were three temperament profiles that stood out from those results. First we have a well-adjusted "typical" profile, which means those children was prone to anger, have lower levels of social fear and low activity level. Next you have the "expressive" profile with higher levels of externalization problems. Those children have lower levels of social fear but higher levels of
