Polynesia is a portion of Oceana made up of 1,000+ islands. They are dispersed across the middle and lower portion of the Pacific Ocean. Polynesia consists of well-known Islands such as Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand. These Islands are also the islands that create the Polynesian Triangle which outlines the area defined as Polynesia. Other Islands located inside the triangle include Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Tokelau, Wallis, Futuna, Niue, Tuvalu, and French Polynesia. The settlements of the Polynesian people have also extended into New Guinea, Caroline Islands, Solomon Islands, Ratuma, and Vanuatu. Polynesia only makes up 1/3 of Oceana. The other 2/3s are made up by Micronesia and Melanesia. The Pacific Island people were originally from Taiwan until they …show more content…
The Polynesian Language was created as Fiji was experiencing a cultural divide and were developing on their own causing many similarities between the two languages. Originally, the people were both matrilineal and matrilocal but according to genetic results the ancestors of the people, who resided in Melanesia, only allowed men to marry into the area, but not women. This shows that they were mainly matrilocal in their ways and continued this through their laws. Eastern Polynesia, however, is suggested to have been settled in two different instances. The Society Islands first from 1025 AD – 1120 AD and then the rest throughout 1190-1290 AD. Politics, through evidence, began because of the Samoa-based Tu’I Manu’a Confederacy which was ruled by the Tu’I Manu’a (the oldest chieftain title). This confederacy spanned throughout almost all of western Polynesia. It wasn’t until about 1000 years ago that the Tonga’s revolted and formed an empire that dominated Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. It’s influenced stretched from the north (Nauru) to the East
In the beginning, Hawaii was unknown to any humans. Polynesians eventually came across its islands, and decided to make it their home. In the early days, each island was ruled by a chief, and many times the islands were in conflict with each other. Centuries like this passed, but then "in 1782, [Queen Lili'uokalani's] cousin Kamehameha set out to conquer and unite the islands". Thirteen years later, in 1795, Kamehameha finally fulfilled his vision of a unified Hawaiian state, and he became king. The nation was then to be ruled by Kamehameha's sons. (Guzzetti 10)

The territory finally became a state in 1959, just ahead of Hawaii. Now, Hawaii is an archipelago, a chain of islands, located in the Central Pacific. Unlike Alaska, annexing Hawaii was due to United States imperialism. Around the middle 1800s, American began to migrate to the islands of Hawaii to start businesses, especially with sugarcane and pineapple. At that time, the islands were ruled by Queen Liliuokalani in a monarchy.
It is inspiring to think of how much water the Polynesians covered in the Pacific, over one million square miles, in a time frame of about 1000 years. Some members of the modern Hawaiian community were so impressed that they established the Polynesian Voyaging Society in 1973. They did some voyages throughout the Pacific without the help of instruments for scientific research and education. The topic was so interesting to so many people throughout the South Pacific that the voyages became more about recovering culture and about teaching the art of wayfinding so that it is not lost in time.
Before the Europeans sailed between the two regions (1000 AD) Squash and sweet potatoes were present in both South America and Polynesia. There is also biological evidence supporting this theory. Scientists discovered and ran tests on chicken bones from Samoa and from Southern Chile. They found that the bones consisted of the same DNA sequence which suggests that Polynesian chickens were introduced in the fourteenth century in South America. That being said, there has been no evidence showing that Polynesian people stayed for extended periods of time in South America or vice versa. This suggests that the meetings between the two regions were brief and did not take place all that often. (Imagina Easter

...an immensely impressive fleet. There is no doubt they were able to travel past Sumatra, India, Iran and the coast of Africa so the same question asked regarding the Polynesians appears, Why would they just stop there? Moreover, there is a map showing the entire world fairly accurately that was drawn in 1763, whose maker wrote that he had copied it from a map drawn in 1418 A.D., centuries earlier. This map and the claim attached to it has not been proven as of yet, however, if it is authentic it would be the first map of the world.

“Once in a while you find yourself in an odd situation. You get into it by degrees and in the most natural way but, when you are right in the midst of it, you are suddenly astonished and ask yourself how in the world it all came about,” Thor Heyerdahl once said and that is what happened to him. One day, he was wondering whether the Polynesians could have come from South America instead of Asia as was commonly thought by scientists then, and the next, he finds himself out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft with five other men and a parrot trying to prove his hypothesis true. To prove that Polynesians could have originated from South America, Heyerdahl built and sailed across the Pacific Ocean on a man-made raft from South America to Polynesia.
The Polynesian peoples have a lifestyle quite different than that of any other culture, as living on an island requires a level of flexible adaptability in order to cope with such a different, sometimes difficult environment. We see the way diverse cultures build their lives around their circumstances and how they respect them in their cultural myths and stories. The Polynesian legends emphasize the physical environment that they live in. They are quite different than any other region in the world, but the beauty and individuality of the Polynesian culture is prominent as seen in their mythology.
Worldwide four languages die every two months. Of the 6,000 known only 3,000 will be left by the end of the 21st century (Schwetizer). Hawaiian, one of the two languages in the state of Hawaii, is spoken by 8,000 of 400,000 ethnic Hawaiians and used in all domains, including oral literature, songs, and religion (“The Hawaiian Language”). Although Hawaiian was once the major language spoken in the Hawaiian Islands, today only a few thousand of Hawaii 's inhabitants claim it as a mother tongue (“Hawaiian”). The term "Hawaiian" comes from the name of the largest island, Hawai 'i in a North Pacific archipelago. The name of the island first appeared in written English when the island was discovered by British explorer James Cook, who wrote the name
Rapa Nui is more commonly known as Easter Island, a province of Chile. Its official Spanish name is Isla de Pascua. It is one of the most isolated inhabited islands on earth, located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The island is triangular in shape, with three volcanic peaks, each one found at one corner of the island. Covered mostly in barren rock or grass and shrubs, the island was once heavily forested. The only indigenous animals are flocks of sea birds and the Polynesian rat. Cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, and dogs were introduced from other islands or from European visitors. The island is in a tropical climate zone, with water obtained from one of three springs, or by collecting rain water.
A triangle is a shape with a total of three sides. The triangle to me looks like one side of “ The Great Pyramid”. A triangle is a two dimensional figure. In a three-dimensional form, it is a pyramid. I strongly believe that the triangle is the most unique shape of all of the shapes.
Trigonometry (from Greek trigōnon "triangle" + metron "measure"[1]) is a branch of mathematics that studies triangles and the relationships between the lengths of their sides and the angles between those sides. Trigonometry defines the trigonometric functions, which describe those relationships and have applicability to cyclicalphenomena, such as waves. The field evolved during the third century BC as a branch of geometry used extensively for astronomical studies.[2] It is also the foundation of the practical art of surveying.
