New 911 employees get another manual outlining employee expectations within the 911 Center itself. The first two weeks is spent going over that manual with a supervisor on a one-on-one basis. Each position whether it be, call taking, fire/medical dispatching, or law enforcement dispatching, has its own manual summarizing tasks and expectations of those positions. Employees are given those manuals when they start training for each particular position. Plus there is a dedicated trainer that covers those tasks with the new employees for a minimum amount of set hours. To monitor and evaluate a trainees progress, the certified communication trainer fills out a daily observation report, which is reviewed with the trainee at the conclusion of each shift until the training phase is complete. Unfortunately there has been a breakdown in communication amongst the supervisors and some unclear unwritten rules have been created. It would be beneficial to review each one of those manuals and add in the agreed upon unwritten rules and make those actual policies so the employees have a clear written policy they can follow. This is something else that can be discussed at the labor management meeting previously mentioned in this assessment. Review of those policy manuals should be continued on a regular basis to add in new information and take out unneeded or out of date procedures. In addition a clear termination policy should be implemented, followed with consistency, and added to the 911 Center employee handbook given to new hires in their orientation
The Service Center’s relationship between departments and their respective managers were strained and lacked successful communication. All the departments have drastically different issues and were unable to come together to make joint decisions for the greater good of the organization.
Chapter 10 was a good read, the role organizational structure plays within an organization of all sizes is very important. In order to diminish police brutality, excessive force, and prejudice behaviors in the police officers, several actions must be set in motion. The police hiring process, training, in-field monitoring, and disciplinary actions must be adjusted to eliminate discriminatory actions against citizens. Likewise, it is a necessity for citizens to be informed of their rights, civil liberties, and how they can resolve corruption within the justice system. These actions seek to shrink the number of minorities who are racial profiled and brutalized by police officers. A more stringent hiring process, it will help curtail unethical and unprofessional police officers. Police training must be altered so that situations are handled safely and impartial. In-field monitoring with eliminate police officers from managing to catch police officers who brutality handle citizens. Disciplinary actions help to prosecute police officers to break the law. Lastly, if citizen are informed of what they should about corrupt police officers and a poor justice systems.
Police corruption is a difficult issue cities have to deal with and one of the oldest problems in the police force. Corruption can be defined as the mistreatment of public power for personal benefit or private and the use of excessive force either emotional or physical. In this essay I will explain in detail federal indictments of Los Angeles Country Sheriff officers use of mistreatment of jail inmates and visitors. Another topic I will explain is the transfer of Los Angeles Country Sheriff hired officers with questionable background. Finally I will end by analyzing the hiring of new Sheriff deputies under the “Friends of the Sheriff” program. There are several ways police departments could take to reduce police corruption. The three areas I think should change are the training officers further in how to diminish abuse, improving personal character of officers, and incentives program.
Police corruption, misconduct, and brutality in the United States have been issues since the creation of watch system in the United States (Grant& Terry, 2012). New policy and training is now in place and the corruption, misconduct, and brutality has gone down since the beginning of policing. This is a huge issue that impacts all police organizations in the United States. The extent of police corruption, misconduct, and brutality is hard to track in the United States. A lot of these crimes go unreported, tossed aside, or the officer responsible gets little or no punishment. This is huge issue in the United States criminal justice system.
Young people and the police have, for many years, experienced a tense and confrontational relationship (Borgquist & Johnson et al., 1995). This has led to a great wealth of literature based upon the notion of police-youth interaction. Much of this literature has tended to focus upon juvenile criminality and the reasons why young people commit such seemingly high levels of crime. Whilst the relationship between young people and the police force has been widely theorised and explained, there is very little literature on juvenile attiudes towards the police. Research that concerns societies attitudes towards the police force tends to focus upon the views and opinions of adults (Hurst and Frank, 2000). In this first section of my literature review I am going to focus upon work that allows us to gain a deeper understanding of why young people are so important when looking at crime. This section will allow us to comprehend the ways in which, literature suggests, young people view the police. This knowledge will provide a basis for my research in which I look more specifically at youth attitudes towards PCSO’s.
From this Community Police Consortium, the BJA put together a report titled Understanding Community Policing, A Framework for Action, which focused on developing a conceptual framework for community policing and assisting agencies in implementing community policing. The basis for this consortium was much more direct than the previous efforts set forth by Presidential Commissions during the 1960’s and 1970’s, and led to what became known as the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS, Title 1 of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994). The core components outlined in the BJA report listed the two complementary core components to community policing: community partnership and problem solving. The report further stated that effective community policing depends on positive contact between patrol officers and community members, establishing and maintaining mutual trust as the primary goal of a community partnership, and police and community must join together to encourage and preserve peace and prosperity. While these are just a few of the recommendations listed in the report, there were many more that set forth the framework for community policing, but these were the core components.

The idea of needing a 911 system started with President Johnson’s 1967 Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, which issued a report recommending that police departments have a single number to call, and that ultimately that single number would come to be used nationwide. (Lorello, 2006. pp.76-81) It was decided that we would need personnel taking care of those emergency calls, and those people would come to be known later on as telecommunications officers/dispatchers/public safety operators. On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. All law enforcement officers know the high standards of behavior that are expected of them and that they have to live up to them. Integrity is what a great law enforcement officer must have, as it is judged to be the ability of knowing the difference between right and wrong. Sticking to the straight and narrow regardless of the temptations that come your way and adhering to all oaths. The job has to be the driving factor and a firm belief in what you are doing.
This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
