At first there seems to be little connection between the three poems however they all surround one thing, man’s capability of destroying this world through ignorance and emotion. We think that this planet will last forever, however every action has an opposite reaction according to newtons third law. This is especially notable as we create chaos not without reason, but the main source coming from ignorance and emotion. It is through ignorance that we make mistakes, in example the lobotomy was used to cure mental illness through incision of the frontal lobe. The patients seemed ‘cured’ as they no longer seemed to experience their previous issues, however what made them human was taken, we didn’t know then what we know now. Emotional stimulus is another reason why we are driven to do terrible things, WW2 will forever be remembered by Hitler’s hatred for Jews that caused a war to go on for six years and the loss of over 60 million people. I also used emotive language throughout the second poem as it was used mostly as to describe the emotions love and hate. While I used Rhetorical questions in bits and pieces within my 1st poem ‘Will you take my hand, take it please?’ and the third poem where I asked the reader what was their desire to bring forth curiosity in response to the poem.
The poems were intended to anyone who had an interest in poetry but are more suited for a more mature generation (high school students and adults). I have designed the poem in such a way that it is simple to read (as the last two are rhyming poems) and used language with strong emotional connection as that’s the surest way to attract an audience. I’m hoping the poem will evoke different emotions like sadness and the desire to do more to change the world, I have done this by appealing to my audience through the language I have
Both poems are set in the past, and both fathers are manual labourers, which the poets admired as a child. Both poems indicate intense change in their fathers lives, that affected the poet in a drastic way. Role reversal between father and son is evident, and a change of emotion is present. These are some of the re-occurring themes in both poems. Both poems in effect deal with the loss of a loved one; whether it be physically or mentally.
Both these poems do indeed have unique interpretations, depending on the reader. However, the methods that the two great poets used to make send those powerful messages are sometimes similar, but in this case largely different. Once one looks past the similarities of man entering water, the two poems have entirely different stories to tell, in very contrasting ways. Each poet has used effective diction, as well as very striking symbolism and imagery. The fact that they are different just shows how many ways there are to write a great poem, the only thing needed in common is the desire, feeling and will.
Martin Luther King Jr once said“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that”. This shows us that light exhibits love, however can be destroyed by the darkness. In the book Honest Truth, a 12 year old, Mark exhibits that love is unbreakable when built a strong bond with someone. “Dogs die, but the dogs live as well. Right up until they die they live.They protect their families . And love us. Make our lives brighter. And they will not waste time thinking about tomorrow”-(Gemeinhart 140) . He shows the bond not breaking despite experiencing various consequences. In the poem, The Gardener XVII, the poet shows that light is inevitable, but darkness can lurk around.For example, in Line 4 the poet mentions”Your words are too dark I cannot understand them”(Tagore 4). This shows that dark cannot be incomprehensible, but light can show us that there are many paths of life. Despite these two passages being written years apart, they still use proper language to show us the differences between light and dark. The poet and author use of literary devices such as similes alongside vivid imagery as well as irony to ensure that the poem and the book shows the proper emphasis of the theme.

As you can see, upon looking at both pieces of writing from a different angle, there is always the opportunity for different interpretations. It is certain that a deeper analysis will give even more possible themes and common topics. Now that you have seen how each of these can be read in more than one way, hopefully you can read other pieces of poetry, attain different meanings for them and have greater love and knowledge for poetry in general.
What struck me about these two poems in particular is the universal truths they reveal, firstly in “The Eye,” how one learns to hate, and then resent and in “A Poem to my Husband from My Father’s Daughter,” how a woman come to terms with her father’s legacy.

These poems are not as complex when compared to other poems, and with that being said they do not take an abundance of inference to determine the theme of the poem. To conclude the comparison of the three given poems it must be said that they are very similar, and in certain aspects even identical. The only exception to this seems to be the second poem, which was a reply to the first. Despite talking about the same topic, and being directly linked to the first poem, it is very different, as it is not attempting to proclaim the poets love, but is turning it down. Equally the last poem differs slightly due to different circumstances. Yet all of them are attempting to show the reader (or the person it is meant for), what the poets feelings towards that person is, by using very descriptive language.
Despite the world being full of diverse people with varying accomplishments and skill sets, people oftentimes assume the qualities and traits of an individual based purely on the stereotypes set forth by society. Although these stereotypes are unavoidable, an individual can be liberated, empowered and ultimately overcome these stereotypes by obtaining an advanced education.
It is said that Western civilization had been primarily male dominated and as a result as diminished the feminine. Women’s roles in society have changed drastically over the past decades. While it took much time, progress for women’s rights has blossomed. Influences in civilization have affected view points of the commonly held mores, expectations, and stereotypes which define gender.
Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.
Both poems inspire their reader to look at their own life. In addition, they treat the reader to a full serving of historic literature that not only entertains, but also teaches valuable lesson in the form of morals and principles.
The language compliments the mood of this poem, as it varies from a sad and melancholy cry, to a voice of hope, all in a constant confident feel, and by this, the poet's reflections and contemplation?s are communicated successfully to us, making us feel in the same way she has felt.
Poetry seems to particularly prevalent in media: television, magazines, movies, and even music. Unfortunately, today’s generation only hears poetry from these sources. Many people know what poetry is, but do not use it very often. Individuals that have taken a poetry class know the freeing effect that it can bring about. What ever happened to academic professionals teaching the importance of poetry? I decided to research the significance of poetry and it’s the advantages of it being used today still.
