Plastic Water Bottles and the OASIS More Alike Than You Think
It is commonly understood that drinking water and recycling plastic bottles makes you healthier and more environmentally conscious. However, according to banthebottle.net, recycling plastic water bottles actually does more harm than good. In fact, “making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel 1.3 million cars for a year…” (Bottled Water Facts). This exemplifies how we are deceived into thinking that recycling is helpful for the environment, but in reality, it is actually harming it; the OASIS does the same thing. This is shown at the very end of the novel when Art3mis, or Samantha Cook in real life, kisses Wade for the very first time. Wade, being that this is his first kiss, feels ecstatic. He exclaims that “It felt wonderful. Like being struck by lightening. It occurred to me then that for the first time in as long as I could remember, I had absolutely no desire to log back into the OASIS” (372). This exhibits that Wade has finally realized that in the OASIS, you are unable to feel sensations like this. Sure, they may be able to feel emotionally, but being able to physically feel is impractical. Fundamentally, the OASIS prohibits the use of humanities five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. In real life, being able to touch a loved one is extremely valuable. The sight or sound of a loved one can ignite the release of endorphins which causes a feeling of euphoria. Being in love can create an immense amount of happiness in a person’s life, but in the OASIS these sensations are not possible. And for this reason, Wade becomes conscious of the fact that OASIS hinders people from forming real, interpersonal relationships.
