The environmental issues in today's world are growing more serious by the day. As a result, it is increasingly important for the schools and colleges to teach good environmental habits. Have you ever seen a student or teacher take a sip of water and then throw the plastic cup away? This is not a good habit. Here at Edmond women's college I think we must taking action to lessen our impact on the environmental. One way is to stop making plastic cups available to the student. One main reason is that using plastic cup is bad for the environment. Firstly, making the cups creates dangerous greenhouses gases. For each cup, energy is required to both create the cup and transport the cup the factory to the college. The use of electricity to make the cup and the gasoline to move it, all come from oil, which is the number one contributor to greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gases cause global warming. Secondly, as we can see the cups are often not placed properly in the bin and they end up blown into the ocean. This is a serious problem because as the plastic slowly breaks down into small atom, it makes its way into the fish. If the fish have too much atom in them, they will die. …show more content…
Firstly, as state earlier, the cup are not thrown in the bin properly and this creates a negative impression for people who visit the college. For example, if you look in the empty classrooms in the late afternoon, the cup are scattered around the college on the floors, desks and hallways. This does not give the college a good image with the people, who usually come to the college in the evening for classes. Secondly, not having cups available will save money for the college. Simply put, the college will not have to buy the thousands of cups used each semester, this money can be used to buy books for the library or used to go on a some fieldtrips
Which means their obviously bad for the aquatic marine life environment & are cause many different forms of damage for them & us as one. On p.g. 23 of The New York Times upfront magazine “Birds, fish, sea turtles, & others are getting tangled in plastic bags or mistake them for food & choke”. Someone else might argue that they could the plastic bags in landfills instead of oceans. But that counter- argument is flawed because you’re just polluting by burning plastic which is bad on our part we’re not doing our part to support & taking care of the earth. Plastic in the ocean isn't just bad for plants & animals but for humans too because of the food chain some of us eat animals as a meat source such as aqua marine life like fish. If the fishermen catch fish that have been eating plastic then it's in our food supply if we eat that fish it's gonna be bad for us so many will end up getting sick from the plastic inside of the fish then what will we do our aqua marine food supply will go down the drain we couldn’t eat the fish since it's basically contaminated with plastic that we’re dumping there instead of trying to fix it & getting rid of plastic bags for good for the good of the earth. We’re causing damage towards the earth by dumping all that plastic into the ocean which damages our water supply it’ll poison us although we clean the water it depends on how big the plastic particles are, it’ll make us sick & sense it’s been lying in the oceans could bring in new pathogens &
At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
"Wailing, for the world's wrong!" ( A Dirge). In this quote someone can see how the author feels about the way the Earth is treated and his strong emotions to the subject. In this essay a person will read about to the similar themes, the similar tones and the different setting of two texts. The two texts are "Plastic: A Toxic Love Story" by Susan Friekel and "A Dirge" by Percy Bysshe Shelley. The first paragraph well be theme followed but tone and last but not least setting. The essay is to give you knowledge of how similar the two texts are, so to start off the first paragraph is theme.
I chose to do my research about an ongoing issue with drinkable water. To narrow it down, I decided to concentrate on bottled water. This topic interests me personally, and I believe might be interesting for my classmates, as the issue affects everyone. Maybe if we realized the problems it causes, we would try drinking from a glass at home or carrying water in a refillable steel container instead of plastic. I hope that my research will change the perspective of the reader about such a convenient thing – bottled water.
There is one hundred and eighty days of school and seven hours in each day. Out of the whole year, one day is dictated to the environment and talked about for five hours. On this day, every teacher makes sure that they have their shiny blue and green buckets out right next to the door that they have set out themselves a few days before this special day. That way when the environmentalist comes to visit and starts to show pictures of the recycling bins, no one starts acting clueless. These very important people start explaining the reason for choosing this particular school to give a very important speech about saving earth as well including that prizes will be passed out if all questions are answered correctly at the end. But only to find out
Most of the necessities humans need are provided in supermarkets, in fact supermarkets have become a necessity for our everyday life. They are now the main source of water, food, clothes and everyday tools. Therefore, the plastic bags demanded and supplied in this industry increase every day. In the past decade, we produced as much plastic as we did in the whole twentieth century (Freinkel, 2011). This exponential increase of a non-biodegradable material has negatively impacted our environment immensely. Plastic production requires our dwindling fossil fuel resources, robs away animal lives, litters our beautiful landscapes and even affects our very own well-being. Hence, if plastic production doesn’t diminish immediately, we will suffer great
Procter & Gamble’s Decision Earth program taught that clear-cut logging was actually good for the environment.said that fossil fuels created few environmental problems and that alternative sources of energy were too expensive” (55). These textbooks contain biased info that is used to benefit the corporation, which ends up teaching students incorrect information about the environment and the rest of the world, leading to false education for these students. Although corporate sponsorship means the students will receive textbooks and other useful equipment, which some schools desperately need, they will be receiving false information that won’t benefit them in the future. Also, schools should provide an environment free from ads because students become convinced to spend their money on these useless products that are advertised to them all day and this repeated exposure to these products brings life-long customers to corporations and most of the time, corporations should not convince students to buy these harmful and useless products because they are not helpful products for students to spend their money on.
I certainly learned that, through our contribution, it is viable to attain a “zero-waste community”. Although Lanikai Elementary isn’t particularly a “zero-waste school” due to the milk cartons and the mylar-packaged snacks that the students bring to school, they are perhaps the only school able to approach the “zero-waste” mark. After the lunch period was over, the whole school, with more than 300 children attending there, only produced a total of 2 gallon bags of waste. It was just confounding to realize the difference Lanikai Elementary is trying to do.
Promote social responsibility; recycle scrap water bottles and use recycled plastic in the production of our bottles
Using plastic bags are second nature to people in this day and age. Warner acknowledges, “Much to the dismay of the environmentally conscious citizens worldwide, the ubiquity of the free plastic carryout bag has bred nonchalant consumers who take this modern convenience for granted” (646). Although some people are conscious about the environment, people strive more for convenience and do not think about the impacts using bags have not only on the environment, but on themselves as well. If something is bad for the environment, it will alternatively be bad for humans as well. When plastic bags are exposed to the sun from being littered all around, the ultraviolet rays cause the substances of plastic bags to weaken. After the substances weaken, the substances become invisible to the naked eye. The substances that are no longer able to be seen are toxic to humans (Warner 649). As a result of plastic bags being littered around, animals consume plastic bags. This is negatively affects humans because animals are often consumed. When humans consume animals like, fish, there can be plastic in the fish’s belly, which then transfers to the humans and this poses a concern for human’s health. Humans are negatively affected by plastic bags because of the toxic chemicals in plastic bags, as well as, consuming animals with plastic in their
According to Green Eco Services, 75% of Americans admit to littering within the past five years. To decrease the massive amount of littering occurring on our San Diego State University campus, we must inform students and faculty of the repercussions of littering, motivate our peers to end the vicious cycle, and assist when the issue of littering occurs. Littering is an ongoing issue on our San Diego campus. First we are going to talk about background information on littering, and the many negative effects it has on not only our campus, but also the environment. We will follow up with unsuccessful attempts San Diego State has used to try to minimize the amount of littering and then discuss multiple solutions that the University as well as everyone individually can take part in.
Being convenient enough for everyday use and even tasting better to some, plastic bottles are a popular way of consuming beverages. They are convenient and to some people, can even taste better. However, the process of manufacturing and transporting the millions of bottles produced is detrimental to the environment. Continued use of plastic bottles could exponentially hurt the planet. Given all the negative effects that come from plastic, why are people still participating in this poisonous cycle?
Ever wondered why people care so much about how clean the environment needs to be? Well that’s because if people don’t take care of our planet then people wouldn’t be living in a safe healthy environment. In order to keep the environment safe there are things that need to be done like recycling used bottles, papers, trash bags and not throwing trash on the roads. In places like school students create ecofriendly programs to participate in. Being a student and getting involved with the environment can encourage other people to do the same.
People should know the negative impact throwing away a water bottle or newspaper, purchasing meat from the grocery store or consuming gasoline has on the environment, and many do not. By informing society about how their decisions affect the environment, we can help save our planet and change our attitude toward the land we live on, the water we drink and the air we breathe” and truly show respect for the stuff that we depend on. The United States produces “about 8.25 billion tons of solid waste each year” (Russell 1). People do not realize the impact they have on our planet and the environment. When people throw anything in the trashcan, they are contributing to the destruction of our planet.
Nowadays environmental pollution plays a very important role in the biggest questions in our everyday life. It is easy to find there is so much trash around us even in our beautiful campus. For example, these days I usually see some cans, wine bottles, and some paper trash like packaging bags in my way to class. I wake up every day with a smiling face, but at the time I see them, I can not smile anymore. I think no one can stand the green trees, the red flowers growing in the sea of the trash.
