A misunderstood breed of dog that started as Americas dog, soon became the face
of "bad dogs". From the first police dogs to criminals dog of choice Pit bulls have been
through many rough situations, from dog abuse to dog fights. They have been outstanding
dogs no matter what, since each breed of any animal has its misunderstandings.
Pit bulls where created in the united kingdom around the 1800's.(Breed History
badrap.org) They where used for bull baiting, and dog fighting soon after became
popular, which is where their name "Pit bull" derived from. Popular in the dog fighting
world for its devastating bite it has then been seen as a dangerous dog. Getting its bad rap
from being a star fighting dog these dogs will be forever seen

as a bad dog , for what it has been forced to do only listen to myths about the harmless lovable breed. For centuries they have been forced to fight and still are forced to fight in illegal fighting rings. Now they are getting more understood and liked much more than before. Being mostly popular in urban culture and even in luxury, Pit bulls can be loyal guard dogs and lovable family pets. Profiling of these dogs has caused them to get banned from many different countries, states, and towns. They get banned from many different places since the attacks that have occurred and the way a Pit bull bites. Since many Pit bulls get forced to fight, so since many are groomed to be fighters they grow aggressive without a clue of what love is . Many places fear for any dog attacks so they think that banning Pit bulls would completely change the chances of a dog attacking. Unfortunately Pit bulls are banned or have restrictions in 28 different countries, including the following; USA, France, Canada, Venezuela, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Russia, Norway, Finland, Belarus, Denmark, Ukraine, Israel, Turkey, Ireland, Romania, Portugal, Switzerland, Singapore, Malta, Bermuda Islands, and in Great Britain.(Banned by countries PETolog.com) Dog fighting has been going on for centuries and has been victimizing Pit bulls. The reason Pit bulls are mainly chosen for the illegal activity is for their vicious bite. Now people think that Pit bulls jaws lock, but that is a myth. The only reason a pit bull bites any different is for its bite is the way the breed does it. "Pit bulls inflict more serious wounds than other breeds.
They tend to attack the deep muscles, to hold on, to shake, and
to cause ripping of tissues. Pit bull attacks were compared to shark attacks."
stated.(dogsbite.org) So for this reason many Pit bulls are the dog of choice for dog
fighters. The worst thing about all of the dog fighting is that it can happen anywhere with
any person. The criminal can be a lifelong criminal, or even a star athlete, such as
Michael Vick. This can show you that it is not the dogs choice to be fighting, but the
criminals choice of whichever dog the person chooses.
Like any dog a Pit bull can be a good dog as long as you treat it as if you where to
treat any other dog. I'm not going to say that Pit bulls need allot of special training and all
to become good dogs, because no matter what they already are good dogs. For example
the dogs that Michael Vick had fought are now very good family dogs. Of course if you
train a Pit bull it would become an even better dog, just like any other dog breed. So my
point is that no matter what a Pit bull can be a good dog whether it was a fighter or is
untrained, just as long as you show the dog some love.
Now, Pit bulls are no different than any other dogs. They are just lake any type

of other dog. they eat the same, play the same, breath the same, sleep the same, and are as good as family pets as any other type of dog. I have personally had only one pit bull in my life , and it was the best damn dog I have ever had. It has never bit me , where as my German Shepard has bit me plenty of times. Also he had protected me and my father from intruders trying to enter the household. In fact Pit bulls where one of the first police dogs, but got replaced for biting the criminals too viciously. So in other words they got fired for doing their job too well. Recently a man in New York has a Pit bull as a K9 police dog. This shows that they are able to be anything, from a guard dog, family dog, and a police dog. Pit bulls are the dogs with the most misconception breed of dogs in the world. many misconceptions come from myths such as locking jaws, natural aggressiveness, inability of training, unpredictability, and aggressiveness after tasting blood. Now locking jaws is a myth from people that think Pit bulls can not open their mouth after biting down, due to the fact that they don't let go after biting. Such a thing as a "locking jaw" does not exist in any type of animal. Thus making this a straight up wrong myth. Another myth is that they are naturally aggressive, which is completely wrong. Not one breed of dog exists that is just naturally aggressive. Dogs have to be trained to be aggressive through training, it does not just come naturally. Some other people say that it is impossible to train a Pit bull.
It is impossible to train any type of animal, hell you can
even train a Tiger. Unpredictability is another misconception that people get for people.
Some people believe that Pit bulls can not be predictable, so they say they can always
attack anyone at anytime. Now, no dog will ever just attack someone for no reason, so
why would Pit bulls do it? Also Pit bulls are not naturally aggressive so they would never
hurt anyone unless they are protecting their owner. Last but not least the "blood myth". It
is said once Pit bulls taste blood they turn extremely aggressive and go on an attack
rampage. Now remember we are talking about dogs, not vampires, so there would be no
reason that blood would make the dog want to kill everything it sees. This myth is by far
the most inaccurate and false thing said about Pit bulls. I fed my dog meat all the time
and if anything he got much friendlier for the love of those steaks.
So in conclusion it comes to show that Pit bulls are as friendly as any other dog
and can be very friendly no matter its past or stuff its been through. Although being
profiled for many years Pit bulls have always been and will always be loving
dogs.
The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog is a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions have severely skewed the reputation of pit bulls that were originally bred to be nanny dogs and take care of small children....
The misrepresentation of Pit Bull breeds in the media has been reflected in American culture. As these dogs were incorporated into World War I propaganda, they were perceived as symbols of courage and strength, the archetype of American dog breeds5. When, in the 1920s and 1930s, American Staffordshire Terrier “Pete the Pup” starred in the comedy Our Gang, later known as The Little Rascals, Pit Bulls were considered “nanny dogs” and family-friendly pets7. When the media focused heavily on illegal dog fighting rings and gang culture in the 1970s and 1980s, Pit Bulls were called demonic and unpredictable. Through their many roles, they have shown versatility and resilience, and lately they have suffered greatly.
Many people associate a negative connotation with the dog breed “pit bull.” These dogs are thought to be dangerous and problematic. However, much of this can be attributed to the mass amounts of negative media attention that pit bull breeds receive as opposed to other breeds of dogs that can be just as dangerous. For example, The National Canine Research Council did a four-day study on dog-bite repo...
Perhaps the reason why pit bulls are feared by society is because we are afraid of what they are associated with. Pit bulls are often thought of as a gangster’s pet, a role in violent and illegal activities. People stereotype this breed because of the unfortunate acts of few. In contrast, society needs to understand that they are being racist towards a breed of dog. Denver’s systematic killing of pit bulls could be compared to the actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust.
To say “pit bull,” however, is a vague reference to several pit bull types, which are considered separate breeds by registries like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Each type has a slightly different breeding history; many began with the breeding of bulldogs with terriers to produce a loyal, compact and tenacious breed (“American Pit Bull Terrier”). The standard three pit bull types most often mentioned by name in breed-specific legislation include the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. That is not the extent of the legislation, however, which also includes dogs that “substantially conform to the breed standards established by the American Ken...
Thesis Statement: Pit bulls are like any breed of dogs that needs to be handled properly by their owners because they can be taught to be less aggressive and more loyal.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis)
They will play many dog games with children without hurting them. They strive for the love of “their humans.” These dogs could also be great therapy dogs to those they care about. Pit bulls can keep people company and take their minds off whatever is bothering them. This breed also has a face that allows them to smile.
I don’t think it is fair to conclude all pit bulls are “vicious” based on the actions of one. I believe towns should punish the deed not the breed. For example, my dog’s previous home had to surrender her because one of their neighbors calling the local city office and complaining that they thought she “looked” like she may hurt one of their children. If she was a teddy bear dog, there wouldn’t have been an issue. Second, not all dogs are raised by the same owners; therefore, they have different attitudes and personalities. Some pits are not as fortunate as others to have nice homes and owners; however, this is true with other breeds of dogs as well. When they have nice owners, they are proven to be loyal, strong willed, obedient, stubborn, and
A vital question that must be asked though is what is a pit bull? The answer to this has become vague in today’s society, but the simple answer is that there is no one single dog that is a pit bull. There is a myriad of many different breeds that have been grouped together
Pit Bulls are not the aggressive breed that everybody makes them out to be. I can understand why there are some people who think that pit-bulls are just mean, but if you get past the looks, they are just big babies.
Owning a pit bull in today’s day and age has one of two reactions: Either the person loves them or is terrified of them. There are so many myths about Pit Bulls and they are just that. Myths. Some of the myths that surround pit bulls are that they have “lock jaw” and they have a killer instinct that does not stop at just killing other animals. Pit bull advocates, such as myself, know that Pit Bulls have always been known as the “nanny dog” throughout history because of how much they love children and their loyalty to their families. Mean or vicious dogs come from ignorant, irresponsible owners. The bottom line is that not all pit bulls are bad.
From the very beginning, pit bulls were used as farm dogs, family dogs, military mascots, and all-purpose companions. [slide 3]
For the past years, newspapers and social media described events of pit bulls attacking people. Among these, they describe the dog as a savage, wild, dangerous and most notably, deadly. However, these are all opinion based with no credible sources to refer back to. These “dangerous” dogs have the common misconception of being violent. But they are not, pit bulls are not the horrible creatures they are deemed as, for that is not in their genes but are among the friendliest and misunderstood dogs in the world.
Each dog is bred for a specific reason, such as catching rabbits, hunting, and guarding. Pit bulls are originally bred to fight other dogs and animals to death. Pit bulls are half-terrier and half-English Bulldog. Terriers are known for their energy and their motivation to keep on going. English Bulldogs are known for their masculinity. PetsWorld, another website, says, “The American Pit Bull Terrier is an athletic canine breed. Pit Bulls make extraordinary donning mutts in that they are agile, strong, and typically energetic. A pit bull can keep running at paces of around 25-30mph.” Pit bulls are athletic dogs, they are more active than the average dog. With their athletic behavior, they can play endlessly with their owners. whether it's taking a jog, or jumping around at home, pit bulls will keep their owners
