When addressing the fighter pilot shortage, there are two different yet equally important considerations. To think that this is an issue that only plagues ACC and will not extend further is naïve at best. The two problems that must be addressed here are both the retention of current assets as well as the recruiting of future ones. As an AFSOC pilot with only four years of operational status, yet just returned from a sixth deployment, a seventh right around the corner, and an eighth before the end of 2017; I bring a glimpse of the retention issue to the discussion. Force shaping cut nearly 20,000 Air Force members and of those only a small fraction were FGOs and higher. A top-heavy Air Force will lead to lower promotion rates in the future. There are members of the pilot community who do not demonstrate leadership potential, and as such their glass ceiling is relatively low and are forced into the civilian world early with still years of Air Force flying potential lost. There are more yet who would choose rather to continue flying (even if that means for the airlines) as opposed to moving into leadership roles and filling staff positions. Line flyers who promote up the ranks find themselves flying less and less, so offering a diverging career path that would allow members the choice to pursue continued flight status as opposed to senior command levels must be considered. A warrant officer program is something that would work well here. The option to sacrifice one’s ability to promote to Maj, Lt Col, Col or higher while moving into big AF leadership roles (either out of a lack of desire to pursue leadership or even a lack of leadership potential) while continuing to fly for the Air Force as a warrant officer (with certain pay changes that come along with that line of progression) has the potential to retain those line flyers that would otherwise
Commissioning in the Air Force has been a life-long aspiration. My grandfathers enlisted, but went on to retire as field-grade officers with careers spanning WW2, the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. Their experiences inspired me to follow in their footsteps and serve my country. After starting college, I soon enlisted due to financial hardships but my desire to commission never waned. Over 10 years’ service, my goal of commissioning ultimately took a back seat to my missions, Airmen and responsibilities at hand. However, I have always sought out opportunities to advance my abilities through holding key positions and seeking out added responsibilities. By earning a commission, I will continue to grow professionally, improve our Airmen and further expand our service's capabilities.

Most of the Aviation accidents have been greatly attributed to “Pilot Fatigue” (Mohler, 1998). This is because a pilot’s input into the aircraft is majorly dependent on his consciousness on the job, therefore incase he or she may be fatigued then this provides room for error in his inputs (Smith, 2008). Even though the technological advancements in avionics the flight systems of the current aircrafts have preventive mechanisms put in place that makes sure that the pilots are always alert, without sleep and freshened, small effects of fatigue can greatly jeopardize flight safety (Mohler, 1998). This is so because the duties performed by the pilot in the cockpit require a lot of vigilance, care as well as both mental and physical well being and alertness. Having considered this it is very hard to eliminate the cockpit noise, aircraft vibration, the long flights; little sleep as well as irregular work schedules which are the major contributors to pilot fatigue and which can have great influence on his or her performance. The basic concept of crew resource management (CRM) is to train crewmembers to use all available personnel, equipment, and experience to safely and effectively operate an aircraft. It is used in nearly every facet of aviation from the smallest regional airline, to the largest major carrier, to the various crew operated military aircraft. One aspect of aviation missing from the fold is the general aviation (GA) community, such as the private pilot. This has become a growing concern as many future air carrier pilots and military pilots begin as private pilots. The need for CRM training in this area is there, but the training seems excessive and useless to many in the field as most of these pilots operate single pilot aircraft. In summary, my Air Force story highlights my journey to becoming an officer in the USAF. It takes into account my Puerto Rican heritage and values and advocates the benefits of maintaining a diverse workforce. My role as a Force Support officer has placed me in situations and enabled the experiences which have shaped my understanding of the profession of arms and better developed me as a leader. Lastly, my contributions to the Air Force mission, at home station or in the area of operations (AOR), have facilitated Airmen at all levels (Tactical, Operational, Strategic) within our Air Force and enabled them to make informed decisions affecting their careers and quality of life.

Satisfaction with the romantic image of rocket building can buoy many engineers through the highly anonymous work environments that many of them face. Individuals don't assemble rockets; teams do, dozens of teams working in highly supervised coordination. An aerospace engineer plays some part on one of the teams, spending more of her time (roughly 70 percent) in a lab, at a computer, and assembling reports than doing anything else. Not being able to see the "big picture" frustrates some professionals. The path to becoming an aerospace engineer is a rigorous one, but those who manage to survive the difficult lift-off emerge with an above-average degree of career satisfaction.
