Health and Well-Being is a high priority in current health and social care provision. Physiotherapists own the responsibility to promote health through physiotherapy practice. The promotion of health to enable individuals who have chronic conditions or are disable to maximise their potential for healthy living. The practice can be reflected on medical, behavioural change and educational approaches.
"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." (World Health Organization, 1946) While well-being means a lack of illness and disease, the ability to maintain your mind and soul in a state of balance. There is a vast majority of areas that need to consider in order classifying health and well-being. Several non modifiable factors affecting health can be genetics, gender, race, age. Other factors like personality, attitudes and thoughts that can affect the lifestyle. The relation within a social group, referred to their attitudes, orientations, or behaviours which take the interests, intentions, or needs of other people into account. As general health can have a massive influence on relationship between friends and family. Awareness of emotion changes, the ability to sustain in control of them, resolving problems, and coping with stress. It also depends on the natural environment. Weather, especially extreme heat and cold and icy conditions, inhibits participation in outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and playing at the park.
In many developing countries a main factor affecting health is water quality. In opposition to this, in developed countries, people tend to be overfed which leads to a higher levels of obesity, therefore lower overall well being...

...and active living is a way to combines physical activity into daily routines. We can do this in a variety of ways, such as walking and cycling over car, taking parts in the social community and exercise for enjoyment. “A United States study found that physically active people have lower annual direct medical costs than inactive people and showed that increasing regular moderate physical activity among inactive adults might reduce the annual national direct medical costs by many billions of dollars” (Pratt M, 2000)
As physiotherapists have to set as the role model in order to promote efficient physical activity. Successful health promotion requires behaviour change. Behaviour is defined as “our actions or reactions, or what you do or don’t do in relation to the environment (external or internal) and/or stimulus” (Barnett, Health behaviour epidemiology 2, 2011).
Most people have an aspiration to get rid of a certain unhealthy behaviour or to employ a new health behaviour that would benefit their wellbeing. Some examples include a wish to stop smoking, eating a balanced diet or getting rid of a sedentary lifestyle. Many psychologists have been trying to find a model that would help people fight these kinds of unwanted health behaviours. One of such is the Transtheoretical model of behavioural change (TTM) which will be the main focus of this essay. Specifically, how one’s sedentary lifestyle can be changed by bringing out a systematic exercising routine using TTM.
Health monitoring allows you to discover and treat health problems early, before consequences. Many psychological disorders, cancers, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders can be prevented by monitoring health and incorporating physical activity and exercise; for example: depression, breast cancer, obesity, cardiomyopathy, emphysema, and osteoarthritis. There are primary benefits that can be received from engaging in exercise or physical activity. One of the main benefits is reducing the risk of premature death: “it is been estimated that people who were physically active for approximately 7 hours a week have a 30 to 40% lower risk of dying early than those who are active less than 30 minutes per week” (Kohl & Murray 2012). It's clear that research has found the importance of avoiding inactivity and that even a little physical activity is better than none at all; due to dose response relation between poor health and the amount of physical activity.
In this essay I am going to investigate whether health is easily defined as the absence of disease or physical injury. According to Health psychology (2009) ‘World Health Organisation defined health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. In order to achieve good physical a nutrition diet is needed, healthy BMI, rest and adequate physical exercise is needed.
My motivations in life have always been centered on my desire to maintain independence and happiness. My passions for physical therapy and health originated from those same motivations. Throughout my childhood, I repeatedly found myself in tough situations that required a level of self -dependency and perseverance that I don’t believe many young minds possess. My parents’ divorce put my life on a trajectory that could have easily been destructive. As a young girl, I realized that despite the lack of control I felt in my hardships growing up, I had control over my academic and future successes. I vowed that I would remember the struggles I faced and concentrate my energy on creating a better life for myself. To this day, it is important to me
Health is a personal feeling of wellness and function that is not the same for everyone.
The occupation of physical therapy has been around for centuries. Throughout time it has evolved greatly as a medical practice and an area of study. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2012, there were 204,200 physical therapists employed throughout the United States of America.
As defined in the World Health Organization’s constitution (2006), health is the state of absolute well-being in the physical, mental, and social aspects and not merely the absence of disease or frailty. The definition of health adapted by most scholars encompasses all the dimensions of a person’s well-being, not only focusing on physical health. It also emphasizes that health does not equate to not having any sickness.
The dimensions of health make-up and create an image of our overall health. This paper will refer to the dimensions of health in relation to myself, and what health change within one dimension would be beneficial to my health as a whole. Health, as defined by the World Health Organization (2014), is a state of total physical, mental and social well-being, not just when disease, illness or injury are absent (p. 1). My definition of health focuses on feeling well enough to perform everyday tasks and to perform these tasks to the best of my ability.
This also discusses health in relation to social institutions, for example family, employment and school. However, health can be defined in a number of ways, such as negative and positive. The negative is where health is perceived to be the absence of disease or abnormalities in the body. This is similar to the positive, where health focuses on the presence of certain attributes, rather than the absence of them. This is different from the World Health Organisation (WHO 2008) where health requires a person to be completely physically, mentally and socially well, but not just in the absence of disease and illness.
Being physically active is one of the most important steps that people of all ages can take to improve their health. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommend that ‘Every adult should accumulate at least 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity exercise on most, preferably all days of the week.’
For example a young child may participate in an after school football club, a teenager up to 30 years may consider taking up physical activity or sports professionally. A middle aged may join a club for eg. Running if they feel they are overweight. The elderly may take place in activity such as bowls or even just everyday walking to the local shops. For each of these examples a person who does not participate in exercise may experience becoming breathless at minimal tasks such as a light jog or walking up or down the stairs, this is because the heart is not able to cope with additional stress as it has no...

Physiotherapy is the study of the movement and function of the human anatomy and the relationship between the persons’ health and wellbeing (Dhrs.uct.ac.za, 2015). A physiotherapist’s speciality is treating “individuals across the life-span who have illness, injury or disability affecting the neuro-musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, vascular, and neurological systems” (Ontario Physiotherapy Association, 2015:3). A physiotherapist’s main goal is for their patient to receive the highest level of independence by educating patients how to “prevent reoccurring injuries” that disrupt their daily routine (Ontario Physiotherapy Association, 2015:3). Physiotherapists would deal with “long term ailments” (Zweigenthal et al., 2009:235) that cannot simply be treated with the dosage of medication but with the dedication from both the physiotherapist and patient in the appointed interactive physical sessions, a treatment plan can be formulated to guarantee the most efficient road to
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
Physiotherapy is a science-based profession and takes a ‘whole person’ approach to health and wellbeing, which includes the patient’s general lifestyle. In recent years, physiotherapists have been progressively interested in defining their professional identity. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and proper functioning to the body when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. Contrary to prevalent belief, physiotherapists are not restricted to the rehabilitation of back pain and sports injuries. As well as musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, physiotherapists can also manage,
