As a Christian educator, it is important and mandatory to build various professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and administrators. Being a teacher and Christian doesn’t come easy, but when it comes to having a relationship with my students I would want to uphold some sort of relationship where there is trust, respect, and being supportive. Students need to feel comfortable around their teacher, but also knows that I am serious about business. That doesn’t just go for my students. It also applies to my fellow co-workers and parents. Some strategies should be applied and demonstrated in class. In my classroom, I expect to have an open communication with my students so we can better understand one another, and for the students to have an outstanding academic and behavioral performance. As a Christian educator, I expect also high expectations out of my students. I willing to help out and tutor anyone who is needing help with anything because I am not only their teacher but their friend and advisor. I would give positive feedback and help them to succeed as much as possible. My belief in my students will inspire them to succeed, but they would also have to believe in themselves that they can to accomplish their goals. When it comes to being a Christian I can show my actions with daily by showing and telling them I am a believer, that I love my students, and to set a Christian like the example. There may be negative people who don’t believe, but you can still be positive and tell the truth to others and not spread lies. Interacting with parents and involving them in their children’s learning can help their children realize that school is very serious. It may also improve their behavior, attendance, and motivation to work and study. Parents need to know as well that teachers care about their children education as well and we are not here just to teach and get them on their way. A good way to communicate with parents since it plays a big part in the classroom would be parent conferences, emails, and phone calls. Once the parents feel comfortable and know that you there for their children then things should go smoothly with them trusting you being able to teach their child. Parents who also know that you are the believer and guide their children in the right direction will help as well. As the majority of the families being Christians it is important that they know you have their intentions that you can trust them and that you follow in Christ footsteps. The goal of every teacher no matter their background should always be to teach all students to the best of their ability. Just as Ackerman (2012) states, teachers must believe that ALL students deserve a chance at success regardless of their backgrounds, learning styles, and/or disabilities. Teachers are to teach and exemplify an abundance of knowledge, love, core values, and life skills to their students in such a way that they will not only be able to apply their knowledge and skills in the classroom, but also in their daily endeavors. This is when we need to step up and help the parent and the child so they don’t fall through the cracks of the education system. We need to increase parent involvement in each child education. Increasing parent involvement, begins with education the parents. Parents don’t realize or know how to get involved with their child’s education. There are many ways families can be involved in the education process. The parent is the child’s most valuable teacher for their whole life. The most benefit this will bring to the families is confidence. Teachers need to help the parents know that they can assist in their child’s education and can help them at home. There are workshops and training to help families get involved. The key is to offer incentives to the training to help increase the parent’s attendance, Communication is the one key with the parents. In today’s socially they are many ways to stay in contact with parents because of technology by email, text, or social media. Invite parent to come to the classroom and volunteer and see firsthand what a day look like for their child in the classroom. Have different events that will increase parents interest and eventually great participation. Another idea could be to send home activities that encourages family involvement. Kids whose parents interact with teachers usually get higher grades and test scores, develop positive attitudes about school, and are better behaved. Parents and teachers need to communicate on a regular basis, not just at parent/teacher conferences. Parent involvement is one of the most influential aspects of student motivation. The parents are the initial teachers of the child before the child goes to school and encounters education through a teacher. If a parent is completely engaged in the learning process with a child, there can be growth between the child and the parent simultaneously. The parents set an example for the child, so that the child understands that help is in the classroom and at home. Alma Wright, a first and second grade teacher, believes that parents in the classroom are a good way to stimulate children. She says, “Their active participation is a positive influence. The school is open for parents to share their talents and motivate their children” (Drew, Olds, and Olds, 1974, p. 71).
A lot of children have two main educators in their life; their parents and their teachers. Parents are their first educators, the majority of what a child learns in the first few years of their life is taught by their parents. It is only when the child starts to attend an early years setting that they start to learn from another educator. Both parents and teachers continue being a major influence on their children's learning all throughout school and for the rest of their lives. The parents and the child's school both have important roles to play in the child's education and should therefore work together as a team. Parents can get involved in many different ways such as; getting involved with the school itself by helping in the classroom or supervising lunch and break times, or for those parents who work in the day and cannot find the time to help at the school they can get involved by; reading to their child at home, assisting with homework and other learning activities, teaching them songs or nursery rhymes and letting them help with everyday tasks like cooking, baking and chores. This can be categorised as: Involvement of parents in the school life or involvement of parents in supporting the individual child at home.
These parents seek one on one interaction with their child and direct contact with the teacher, which to me is what I look for. Without the parents involvement teaching becomes so much harder not only for me but for the student.
