Phillip McCray, a Senior at San Francisco High School was a very athletic and academic man. A 6’4 ft 18 year old who always had troubles understanding what his parents wanted him to pursue. He was always in the honour roll and loved the sport of basketball. He always carried a journal to write his poems. But he questioned what he truly wanted to do with his life. What made things worse was that his closest friend Mark had died from a car crash in late May. Mark was always the one Phillip could request advice to. He would always give Phillip the most amazing choices he had ever heard in his entire life. His teammates just couldn’t understand how hard this was for Phillip. I don’t blame him, if I were in his shoes I would have no one come and talk to me. But something had happened that day, Coach Cartier, our head coach for the basketball team had talked Phillip into playing our last game in San Jose. He was very silent when he walked into 5th period that day. I guess he had thought this thru and just decided to play. But the way I see it, basketball wasn’t just a game for him. It was a more valuable thing that people couldn’t understand. I sense that because of what had happened to Mark, and I often heard rumors about Phillip’s parents always giving him a hard time. I was for certain the only reason he joined was so that he could avoid the things that had occurred to him. That’s why, Phillip McCray, had accepted the offer of going to San Jose with us. The boys basketball team and Phillip had just travelled an hour and 3 mins to the San Jose High School for their final game! I glanced at Phillip who had his earphones on and was very quiet.
