Pharmacy Informatics
Jinwon Byun This month, I did a rotation with Pharmacy Informatics team in the Cleveland Clinic. Before I started my rotation, I had no clue what Pharmacy Informatics does. Fortunately, my preceptor, Marc Willner, understood me and already knew that not many people know about Pharmacy Informatics. So, he gave me a brief overview about Pharmacy Informatics. He scheduled me with meeting many other people of the Informatics team, so I had an opportunity to shadow many different people and their jobs in the pharmacy. Pharmacy Informatics team in Cleveland Clinic was lot bigger than I thought. There were many different parts in the Pharmacy Informatics. Instead of pharmacy technicians, Informatics had analysts to help Informatics pharmacists. Pharmacy Informatics worked on all the behind the scene of Epic, which the health information record system is used by the entire Cleveland Clinic. He gave me a list of medications that might have a risk for pregnancy women. So, I started researching medications, and this project would be passed to next APPE student to keep working on. Also, I set alerts based on Cleveland Clinic renal dosing guide via Alert Space. Alert Space was the other program that helped to sync new updates with Cleveland Clinic alert system. Other than those, I involved with DEA registration for new medical residents, diltiazem and Lorazepam file review, Avon hospital Lexicomp formulary, and Beacon (Oncology team) research protocol checklist. I really enjoyed doing projects because I felt I actually involved in the Pharmacy Informatics team. Also, I helped Informatics pharmacists and analysts.
