Pets, of all different kinds, can offer much more than just companionship. Pets always seem to be there for their owners, especially when they are going through hard times. These animals can do so much more than many think. They are able to contribute to a better physical and mental health of the pet owner. Since working with animals can have a positive on social, mental, and physical effects, people of all ages can benefit from owning a pet.
Many scientists agree that pets are helpful at reducing one’s stress. Just touching an animal can reduce or banish stress. Pets can help to ease one’s anxiety by replacing it with companionship and love. Those who are stressed or frequently worrying, are most likely to become depressed. Since animals can reduce or avoid depression in many people’s lives, it gives them meaning to their life. Pets are a big part of their owner’s lives, since they can add structure and routine to their owner’s day, which is essential to being stress-free. Most pets need to be walked, fed, taken out, or cleaned everyday. Pets can help remove the stress and chaos from a person’s everyday life (Robinson).
Pets have shown to help lower blood pressure caused by stress. Having high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks or result in injury to the brain, eyes, or kidney. Most of us are depressed due to physical, psychological and socio-environmental stress. We do have many gateways to suppress our depression. Some may be good and some may be not. There are many advantages to having a dog as a pet to help mental health. When one does not want to get up and face the day a dog can usually make them happy with their unconditional love and their need for the owner’s attention. A person’s mood is lifted when they go outside to play with their dog since the sun and fresh air wakes them up and makes them a little happier. The sun also has Vitamin D that helps with some mental and physical health issues such as; Depression, cancer, obesity, heart attacks. Pets are all over the world, and a part of many people's everyday lives. After seeing my grandmas dog close to death about a week ago, it reminded me of how impacted I was when I lost a pet in the past. That’s when I realized that pets leave a very impactful mark on other people's lives. Then, I remembered not everyone has had pets in their lives due to various reasons like allergies and seeing them as dangerous. This led me to my research question; Should kids have pets in their lives? Weighing the options, I can see both sides to the question at hand. I was a child who grew up with pets by my side, but I also had been greatly harmed by one. When I was just a preschooler, I was critically bit by my own dog in the face, just inches away from a fatal vein in my neck. I still have the scar to this day, yet I still surround myself with animals everyday.
Having a dog as a pet help the owner stay connected with the social life. The owner needs to bring their pet go out for exercise, take the pet to visit the pet groomer and also having the veterinary checkups for their pet. All of these need the owner to communicate with others and involved themselves in the social activities.
