When it comes to traveling to a familiar place, they are not always going to be so familiar. There is something about unfamiliarities in a familiar place that is refreshing and gives you a break from the monotony of most of your routines. In Peter Jon Lindberg's "Summerland", he talks about a vacation spot in Maine that he brings his family every year. He explains how the only thing that stays familiar year after year is the cottage in which they reside. "Constancy is the most underrated of virtues, in people but also in places." This quote by Lindberg perfectly describes this theme. No matter how many times you go to a destination in your lifetime, each experience and even the place itself will be different. Although it is not quite the same each time, there is a sense of comfort in returning to that family vacation spot. This is proven by Lindberg's statement, "What I've awoken to since is the soul-affirming joy of returning. Going back, it turns out, does not mean retreat. A ritual is not a rut." While most people travel to get away from the familiar it is refreshing to …show more content…
have that one go to place where you know you can enjoy yourself and your time away from home. This spot in Maine is actually one that I myself am familiar with.
When I was younger my parents would take my sister and I to a spot near Pine Point around the same time in August for the end of our summer vacation. It was something that we could look forward to all year and we knew that no two years would be the same. There were new restaurants that would open up and also places with different types of activities such as a multilevel arcade. It was not the differences that I would look forward to though, but the things that were exactly the same. The camp site that we would stay at was always exactly the same as well as the quality time spent with family. No matter what the weather was like, nobody was worried, because just the time away from home secluded with your family was enough to keep us happy. This is a perfect example of why every time you travel, you do not need to go to a new
place. On the other hand, a place may be familiar to you not because you have been there before, but because you have heard so much about it whether it be from stories told by a loved one or something you heard on the news. This is the shown in "A Prison, A Paradise", by John Jeremiah Sullivan. Even though he has heard all of the stories from his Cuban mother-in-law, when he travels there it is all very unfamiliar. Although it is not far from home, it is almost like a completely different world. Not only can the way of life and the environment differ from what you are accustomed to, but also the way people act and treat others. Here in America we are used to the standard of being treated courteously and politely by the staff of whatever business we are in but this is not always the case in other places. This is proven by the statements made by Sullivan, "The hostility of the hotel workers was to be experienced. I started making up reasons to approach them, just to provoke it and make sure I hadn't imagined it." and "She looked at you dead level and half smiling when you approached as if in her mind she were already pushing in the blade."
On March 1st, 1932 in a crime that captured the attention of the entire nation, Charles Lindbergh III, was kidnapped from his family’s mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. Charles Lindbergh III was the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne. Charles Lindbergh, who became an international celebrity after he flew the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927, and his wife Anne discovered a handwritten ransom note demanding $50,000 in their son’s empty room. The so-called “nursery note” bore a symbol or logo consisting of three interlocking circles and three small holes, which would later become a distinguishable feature in future extortion letters sent by opportunists trying to cash in on the crime.
She addresses this word in a couple different ways: to travel in your mind, travel close distances, and lastly staying right at home. Berne uses “travel” through the mind by explaining, “Travel, in my opinion, is one part locomotion and three parts the desire for discovery. It should set the mind going” (413). Berne knows that any place one goes can be an adventure. Berne uses the word “travel” for close distances as well because she loves to be outside and enjoy nature from her words, “... I do wander locally for most of my excitement” (415). Berne says that to “travel” doesn’t mean to fly somewhere, people travel just by walking in the park, in the woods or enjoying a good book. The last of many ways that Berne uses “travel” is by traveling right in your own home. Berne read many stories about writers who stayed right at home, “some of the most stirring travel accounts I’ve ever read, in fact, have been written by people who stayed right at home” (414). Aldo Leopold did this by treating each season as a different place. Berne used “travel” many times in her article, but she believes that traveling in your mind, close to home, or in your own house is more spectacular than actually going somewhere far
Sometimes people's favorite location is not a specific location at all; sometimes they just want to be alone. An example of finding solace in nature is represented in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild. In his book he explains and researches the life of Chris McCandless. McCandless was someone who just enjoyed being alone. He was a nature lover and only wanted to be able to appreciate the beauty of the wilderness. He spent time drifting through the western United States and ultimately ended up in Alaska. He encouraged others to follow his lead: "Don't settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon" (Krakauer 58). I don't think constantly moving around is for everyone, but I do believe you should appreciate the beauty of simplicity found in nature. In present day McIntosh reserve is a public park where many activities and festivities are held. Some of these include the annual Native American Pow-wow and cross country meets. Both of these are very dear to me. I am very connected with my Cherokee heritage. This park is also where I ran many races and train
Our trip back to Minnesota was one of the worst. Our first flight was behind we would have missed our connecting flight from LA to Minnesota. So we had to wait for about two hours more for a flight to Phoenix and then back to Minnesota. Once we got to Phoenix around nine we had a three hour delay til our flight back to Minnesota. While waiting for our flight back I watched Ride Along. The movie was great and the time flew by. Out flight back home left at midnight and was about a four hour flight to Minnesota. Because of the time change we didn't land until five in the morning. We took a taxi back to the hotel where we had our car parked. We had to brush off all of the snow on the car. We didn't get home until 6:45. Other then the flight home I had a great spring break. One to sure to remember.
Last year I went camping for the first time, and I had my children with me. Don't get me wrong; my husband was there, too. He had camped before he got married. The scale of excitement was just higher for my children and me. I read books that described the camping experience, and I couldn't wait. Camping sounded earthy to me. There was an element of living like the pioneers; without all the hardships. Using an outhouse is hardship enough, for me.
I traveled for the first time last year to the Space Needle, and I totally felt like a tourist. The trouble with far away tourism is that it can take up lots of time, money, and the environmental cost is high. So why not just step out the backdoor and get lost? Traveling around close to home means you keep your money local, have longer to experience a location, and still see new sights. Travel doesn’t need to be across the world to feel leisure, in my own life I found peace at the top of a mountain hiking at Lake Ann. No more than an hour or two drive from my home and I can experience something I never have before and still have it contain the three elements of travel. I moved between two places, for a period of time, and I had a purpose. My wish was to experience nature at it’s finest; I felt a glacier that’s older than me, hiked mountain peaks that looked impossible and felt as though I touched the sky. Even though it was out my back door, how can you not feel small in an atmosphere such as
When I travel anywhere, I always feel a whirlwind of emotions that swirled around in me, feeling a bit like butterflies in my stomach. It almost resonated from me, which confused others as to why I was so happy to travel. When traveling, I stay wide awake taking in all the different views. It is a remedy for any funk I find myself in. For some, traveling is a dull heavy burden, while for others it is a fun exciting opportunity to see the world and it's people. I have a lot of different traveling experiences that I still day dream of today.
Why is travelling so inspiring? This question can be answered by the plain fact that it takes you away from all the stress. You are in a place which is alien to you; where you do not know anybody neither does anybody know you. You are completely on your own. You have the freedom people crave for and during this time period you can do anything you wish for without thinking about what the world with say. This is what travelling gifts you as said by Freya Stark, “to awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” There is something strangely endearing to be on your own. The thought may sound frightening that you are alone and you will have no one to turn to lest you get in some trouble but that is what life is all about and this is what travelling teaches us, to take on new challenges, to not care about luxuries and instead find a new world. John A. Shedd is reported to have s...
As cliched as it sounds, summers were the happiest times of my adolescence. Not because of the obvious reasons like the shackles of school being ripped off or the blistering heat tattooing my skin red, but because for most of my youth my brother, Brad, and I would travel to a little yellow house in Kentucky awaiting my mom and my little
Growing up with a family who loves to travel has been carried over into my adult years and I try to go somewhere new at every possible chance I get. Throughout all of my travel experiences, I have met new people and experienced things I never could have within my own hometown. For example, I have developed an open-mindedness for cultures and practices other than the ones I am used to. You are able to become more aware of international problems and not just have a concern for your own country, which is a problem many of us have. For a lot of people, being thrown into unfamiliar surroundings is a terrifying idea but to me it is the most exhilarating part. It has led me to become a much more independent and well-rounded person. Travel is also a great stress reliever from everyday life. So far, my favorite travel experience and one that has led me to travel even more would be when I traveled around Europe two summers ago. I went from Barcelona to Valencia, Valencia to Ibiza, Ibiza to Paris, And then Paris to London. It was the first trip I had ever done without my parents or a family member along side me and I absolutely loved it. Being in a new country by myself let me learn so much about the type of person I am now and who I want to be in the future. All of the travelers and locals I met are some of the most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of coming across. Although I may never see them again, I will always keep in contact and remember the things they had taught me. We don’t always travel because we necessarily want to but because we need to in order to have a newfound creativity, state of mind, and outlook on the
Going on a road trip with my family means the world to me. We drove to another state during summer vacation, and it was by far the best road trip I have ever been on. My family and I were able to go to many fun places. We ate so many exotic and delicious foods as well. Yet most importantly, I spent time with my family and their friends. It was the day when my family and I went to California for our summer vacation.
Trips, whether they are road trips, trips across countries or even oceans allow for knowledge to be gained, as well as memories that will last forever. Living life in one area is great but exploring new places and cultures adds character and more well-rounded views. Even if it is just a business trip, immersion is inevitable. Take the time to embrace the wonder of going to a new place. The trip I am about to talk about introduced me to a world of new information and adventures.
My friends, brother and I go camping in Summerville, a state park in Texas yearly. Many people go camping but my friends and I have the best camping trips that you can ever have. Our camping experience consist of chasing animals during the dark nights, exploring places people have never been to before, finding our own dinner and being the pranksters that we can sometimes be, while also being fire experts. Our camping experience is about bonding together as a group of friends and having a fun time through new adventures.
Every summer my dad, brother, and I go camping at least twice a month. We don’t have a set camp ground we go to, we just love camping on warm summer days and we bring our little fishing boat to the lake and ride the cool calm water. We would set the boat with our anchor, cast our fishing rods, and relax while catching so many whiskered catfish. We have been doing this for a few years since we moved here from Massachusetts. The lakes are large with not a lot of people around, which is nice and relaxing since some people are loud and obnoxious. The lakes are surrounded by tall trees, glittering beaches and old hiking bridges. My favorite part is the smell of the burning campfires and smoky food we have, and it is a great getaway from people. Camping is my favorite thing to do with my family, no matter when or where it may be.
Every year my Family and I take a trip to the state park campgrounds. As soon as you see the entrance sign, a sudden tingling feeling bubbles through your body knowing a week of relaxing bliss is about to be engaged in. I roll down the screeching window, and I can almost smell the crisp earth, see the glassy lake, and taste the campfire cooked smores and hotdogs.
