One problem with sugar is that most of the nutritional value is removed during the repeated steps of refining it. Sugar, a with so many other foods, has been subjected to marketing ploys. Specifically I'm referring to "raw sugar". It's not at all raw, it's highly refined and void of nutrients like any other table sugar. And don't let the term "pure sugar" trick you either -- it's the same devoid product as table sugar and not a wholesome product at all.
I think the real question Mr. Skeptic had is what are the dangers of refined sugar. After the HFCS debate that question is even bigger in my mind, and probably his. To me it's clear that HFCS isn't just void of nutrition, it's evil, so now it's time to see where sugar fits into this health discussion.
Here is a quick list of problems I've found related to too much sugar in your diet:
dental decay weight gain, obesity even leaches the body of vitamins and minerals impaired immune system, opening the door to attack, like of cold, heat, mosquitoes, microbes, etc. decreased bone density depletes the body of glucose, the real cell fuel we have brain function diminishes blood pressure goes "abnormal" malnourishment acidic, gassy stomach stressed endocrine system hormone imbalance elevated triglycerides and lowered HDL (the good cholesterol) fatigue mental anguish;

All consumed sugar needs magnesium, calcium and B-complex vitamins for its digestion. Complex sugars, or carbohydrates -- starch, fruits, vegetables -- contain those nutrients, as well as fiber which is missing in sugar. Refined sugars don't have such nutrients, which are required to digest them, so the body provides them, ultimately depleting the body's reserves. The argument for eating refined sugars as long as you take vitamins too reminds me of "white bread" and its ilk: just add the nutrients that have been stripped out so you can have "nutritious food". What a weird way to spend money and foil a healthy
“there’s a fundamental difference between the sugar that you find in fruits & vegetables and the sugar that you find in a large Mountain Dew. The sugar in a lot of these carbonated drinks is highly concentrated simple sugar, the kind that will spike your blood glucose levels, reduce your insulin response over time (leading to Type 2 diabetes) and almost immediately get stored in your body as fat.” There is a difference between sugar from nature and sugar that is processed. Sugar that is processed is highly concentrated because of this it tends to increase your blood glucose levels higher than natural sugar. With high
According to the article, Too Much Can Make Us Sick (http://www.sugarscience.org/too-much-can-make-us-sick/), “Heart disease. Diabetes. These chronic conditions are among the leading causes of death worldwide. Increasingly, scientists are focusing on a common set of underlying metabolic issues that raise people's risk for chronic disease. It turns out that the long-term overconsumption of added sugars is linked to many of these dysfunctions.” This means that people living today, have a lot more trouble with diseases because of our unhealthy sugar intake compared to the
The Sugar Busters diet claims that sugars, such as refined sugar and sugar processed by the body-starches and complex carbohydrates, are toxic to the body. The Sugar Busters diet operates under the belief that only a certain amount of insulin is necessary for survival, and too much will have a negative impact on the body. The intent of the Sugar Busters diet is to lower cholesterol level, obtain weight loss, increase energy, and improve the body’s health; the diet achieves this by eliminating food high in sugar from the diet. Sugar is eliminated from the diet because it stimulates excess insulin to be produced by the body, which increases cholesterol level and allows the body to store fat. By controlling the insulin, the body can use stored
The average American eats 156 pounds of added sugar each year. Sugar is delicious and once we have it, our body constantly wants more. Added sugar has become an American epidemic. “Eighty percent, or 480,000 of the 600,000 food products sold within the U.S. have added sugar, which, according to researchers and medical doctors, is why we have the world 's highest obesity rate is at 31 percent,” (Fed Up). The addictive quality of added sugar makes our brains want more of it constantly; however, our bodies are being negatively affected by its consumption in many ways.
High fructose corn syrup is known to proliferate levels of uric acid; it also can raise lactic acid levels (Buist), which leads to muscle cramps. The intake of corn syrup creates a higher risk for heart disease. It also produces “oxidative damage” to the body, depriving cells of oxygen, which in turn speeds up the aging process (Buist). Fructose is broken down by the liver, so the the liver has to pause its production of insulin in order to break down the sugar. This can lead to diabetes and weight gain. High fructose corn syrup also impedes the breakdown of copper, which also can lead to diabetes, heart attacks, and thyroid problems (Buist). Ingesting this sugar ...
Processed sugar is found in most of our prepacked foods, then it must be safe? Actually it is the cause for most of our health issues and we need to try alternatives, or we will have serious health issues. In the 1960s, there were 2 scientists and the debate was over fat and sugar health risks. After this debate, fat was declared to be the issue with all of our modern health issues and companies soon started to get rid of extra fat from their products. In the 2000s, the debate opened again and the decision was processed sugar is the issue and the corporations revolted and told the world, exercise is the fixed and this is what people think today. The difference between natural sugar and processed sugar is how the body process it and the difference is like a dripping faucet versus a faucet that is at full blast. Consumers should avoid buying processed foods and drinks that have high amounts of processed sugar because it has a negative impact on the human body.
An example of this is in a Jamba Juice smoothie. Jamba juice says that there smoothies are only made of 100% natural ingredients. “ “Natural” or “organic” does not always equal healthy..” states Sarah Pacheco in the article ‘how healthy is jamba juice for you” The orange dream machine packs 540 calories for one 24 ounce original size. In comparison “one smoothie equals one-quarter of a person’s daily calories” . An addition to this is in Mountain Dew. A 20 oz bottle contains 77 grams of sugar as opposed to the 110 grams that we should be consuming every day as stated on ehow.com. That’s a whole 70% percent of the amount of sugar we should be taking in each day in one 20 oz bottle of soda. In the article “Why is too much sugar bad for you” Lauren Cox states “What we know is that added sugars put you at a higher risk for a poor lipid , Higher triglycerides, lower HDL (the good cholesterol) and higher LDL levels (the bad cholesterol) in the blood”. Kris Gunnars says in the article 10 Reasons why sugar is bad for you” on authoritynutrition.com, “sugar can cause insulin resistance, a stepping stone towards metabolic syndrome and
HFCS can be habit forming since it is a sweet replacement for sugar and in his article Peretti mentions that David Kessler said “sugar, through its metabolisation by the gut and hence the brain, is extremely addictive, just like cigarettes or alcohol.” People enjoy the taste and because of this they consume large quantities, which lead to health factors such as: obesity, diabetes, heart problems, infertility, liver problems, and so on. Our limited perspective may cause us to lose sight of how much of a risk HFCS possesses.... ... middle of paper ... ...
McDonald’s is delicious and convenient, and only cost a few dollars. On days were you are extremely busy they are there to serve whatever you would like from the menu. Sometimes it seems as though you can access it quicker than a trip to the grocery store. Even though, you know you will be hungry again later, you still pull up and go through the drive thru and place the order. While placing your order do you ever think of what this kind of food is doing to your body? Alternatively, that for just a few dollars that conveniently priced meal over time could cause your health to deteriorate. Fast food restaurants are adding to the obesity epidemic. Living in the age were technology has taken the place of personal interactions,
For years doctors have been saying that refined sugars are empty calories and consist of absolutely no vitamins or minerals that people need to survive. Dentists warn that sugary foods encourage tooth decay. Many people avoid sweet food because it can lead to obesity, heart problems, diabetes and cancer. These negative responses by people’s bodies are actually warnings. Maybe people eat sugar for other reasons than the sweet taste. The human body's negative responses to sugar may be a similar purpose to the reason kids feel pain when they are playing too roughly. People’s consumption of sweet foods might also serve as a sign of defiance against their bodies’ health limitations. What many people do not realize is that their tasty treats can affect their mind and emotions.
Obesity is a very serious matter in the world today and there needs to be a regulation to help with this issue. With children becoming less active and eating more, their risk of obesity is much higher. Kids do not need to be rewarded with fast food every time they want it or every time they do something right. Parents and young children around the world need to understand the importance of healthy food so they can make better choices. If they make better choices with food, then the less likely they are going to have major health problems in the long run. My goal is for the U.S. Department of Agriculture is to raise the prices on meats and unhealthy foods that are made in fast food restaurants, and instead lower healthier food that you would buy in the grocery store. Fast food comes from the leftovers of the cow instead of the actual healthy stuff from them. That’s why fast food is so cheap and meat from the deli is so expensive. Fast food meat is not healthy in any way because it has no nutritional value in it. If prices increase at fast food restaurants, then the average American is more likely to stay away from there and just get their things from the store where they are a lot healthier. Yes these meats in the store may cost a little bit more but they get a lot more nutrients out of them along with a couple meals. If one person cooked a couple patties of hamburger or steak, then they would be able to eat it for a few days and change up the way they eat it as well. If one night they want to have hamburgers then they can, and then if they want spaghetti one night then all they have to do is cook the noodles and put the meat in the sauce.
1. According to the "Nutritional Facts" that are posted on McDonald's web site, one Big Mac contains 540 calories and 29 grams of fat, which is 45 percent of the national recommended daily value based on a 2,000-calorie diet, according to McDonald's. One large order of fries contains 500 calories and 25 grams of fat, which is 38 percent of the recommended daily value. The 32-ounce Coca-Cola Classic adds another 310 calories (Ali, Sam).
There is a small relationship between fast food and cigarettes where each one significantly causes long term problems. Similarly, eating fast food and smoking too much becomes dangerously unhealthy and both are addicting. However, the difference is fast food started off on good terms. It was intended as a helpful way to provide meals quick and ready, thus given its name (Aldridge 279). Fast food restaurants successfully expanded and became popular all over the world. Despite the worldwide success and popularity, it did gain negative views after weight problems began to rise. The food served from the fast food industry was never considered healthy and soon became the target for the blame on health problems, specifically obesity. Although fast
We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. When it comes to sugar, it seems like most people are in the mind frame knowing that it could be bad for our health, but only a few are really taking the moderate amounts. In fact, as a whole population, each and everyone of us are still eating about 500 extra calories per day from sugar. Yes, that seems like an exaggerated number judging from the tiny sweet crystals we sprinkle on our coffee, but it is not. Sugar is not only present in the form of sweets and flavourings, it is hidden in all the processed foods we eat. We have heard about the dangers of eating too much fat or salt, but we know very little about the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. There still isn’t any warnings about sugar on our food labels, nor has there been any broadcasts on the serious damages it could do to our health. It has come to my concern during my research that few
Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.
