Black Friday Should Start On Friday
When should Black Friday start? Black Friday is a shopping day that stores offer their best deals to kick off Christmas shopping season. Recently some stores are having their Black Friday deals earlier and earlier every year, even to were they are opening their doors on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, cutting time that employees get to spend with friends and family. I believe that Black Friday should start on the Friday after Thanksgiving for not only for the employees to spend time with their family but their family spend time with them too.
Again why Black Friday should be on Friday. For example, on the U.S. news reported that retail employees have gone to the internet media and started a petition site, change.org, asking for early-opening retailers such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Target to push back their sales. They argue that by opening earlier that retailers are stealing time away from their families. I use to work for a major retail store and we could not request to have that day off so I had to work on Thanksgiving Day. Not only did I not get to spend time with my husband and three kids, but family that came out of town to spend time with my family and I.
Even on New York Times reported that Black Friday sales

But it has show that sales decline due to people, us, would rather spend time with our families then trying to get a good bargain. Also online shopping has also made it easier then to bet the crowd and waste precious family time and employees not showing up to work cause they would rather be at home with family. I also do Black Friday shopping and recently since they have change their sales to Thanksgiving Day, it has discourage me to even want to go out and do any shopping due to my family is more important and our time with our family is way more valuable then saving money on
Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.

According to Business Insider, it has been estimated that Walmart gains an average revenue of 750K per week. Imagine how much money they would lose in just one day if society decided to purchase no goods. I prefer that we shouldn’t lean towards the idea of “Buy Nothing Day” because it could affect millions of people in disastrous ways. It would only benefit large companies by eliminating their local business competitors. Small businesses and family-owned establishments could be affected with no customers in a day, which can lead to a loss of revenue or possibly put them in debt. Whoever thought of this idea must be unintelligent because, in reality, people won’t likely participate due to them needing resources immediately. We have been so accustomed to consumerism that it would be nearly impossible to stop shopping for one whole day. The economy would collapse if the nation won't be making any money. It would take a long time for it to recover which can result in an unstable economy.
My job is becoming stressful and holidays like Black Friday, isn’t the best way to spend it as an employee. I applied right before Christmas ended in 2013 and so did my friend. I was hired a day after my friend received a notice the following year, stating that he did not get the job, but I did. (Laughs.) Ever since the past two years working as a salesperson, the theory of changing jobs has not passed through my mind yet. The company provides various athletic equipment and clothing, for numerous sports. Since I’m a competitive soccer player, I can create better customer relationships in all departments. However, that all changes, when Black Friday arrives. Customers become aggressive and expect answers to each question, within seconds. I see customers on Black Friday, as a snatch and grab customer, who moves from one store to the next.
On Independence Day, people get together with family and friends. Similarly, they gather together to enjoy harmony time with others on Thanksgiving Day. However, people eat barbecues together, watch parades in the street. In addition, there are massive concepts fireworks at many cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. It is called “black Friday”, which is a shopping season until Christmas in
Black Friday is notorious for the outrageous sales that can cut prices of even high end products by half. For this one day a year, a consumer can purchase a product for just a fraction of what they would pay any other day. The friday following Thanksgiving is so crucial in the success of black friday for a store to profit. Because Thanksgiving is a national holiday that falls on a Thursday, the average American does not work on that Friday, and thus, has no prior engagement to spend their time on. During this sale, people often turn their focus towards holiday gifts, which further provides reason to fight the crowds for the sales. Creating additional highly advertised mass sales would only create diminishing marginal returns for the businesses, therefore only allowing this one specific day to give consumers deals on high demand products.
After all, Black Friday has the reputation of being a day where people will give up their dignity just to save a few dollars on something that they don’t need. However, the growth of the day of Black Friday has actually projected to stop increasing, and the association of the Black Friday with the holiday season is actually exaggerated. For example, 2014 was the first year when Black Friday store times were not pushed earlier within many years (Source A). Also, data has uncovered that Black Friday is not in fact the day when Americans are most likely to get their shopping done, and the dates that did earn that position turned up closer to Christmas than Black Friday (Source A). This evidence suggests that the popularity and reputation surrounding Black Friday is exaggerated when not just false. Black Friday shoppers are often have separate motivation for shopping other than preparing for the holiday season. Also, the low prices that draw shoppers into stores the day after Thanksgiving are not expected to excite people in the future as much as they did in the

From an anthropological point of view, Black Friday can be considered an annual American consumption ritual for millions to partake in. The evidence for relating Black Friday as a day of ritual is clear when taking into account the magnitude of people who participate in this holiday and how closely the day can meets Rook’s (1985) criteria of ritual. There is an established relationship between the consumer and the retailer and an annual ritual script to bond this relationship. The script manages the expectation for retailers to offer advantages to consumers and for these buyers to spend a large amount of money.
