Walmart Buy Nothing Day

According to Business Insider, it has been estimated that Walmart gains an average revenue of 750K per week. Imagine how much money they would lose in just one day if society decided to purchase no goods. I prefer that we shouldn’t lean towards the idea of “Buy Nothing Day” because it could affect millions of people in disastrous ways. It would only benefit large companies by eliminating their local business competitors. Small businesses and family-owned establishments could be affected with no customers in a day, which can lead to a loss of revenue or possibly put them in debt. Whoever thought of this idea must be unintelligent because, in reality, people won’t likely participate due to them needing resources immediately. We have been so accustomed to consumerism that it would be nearly impossible to stop shopping for one whole day. The economy would collapse if the nation won't be making any money. It would take a long time for it to recover which can result in an unstable economy.

Consequently, people need to start shopping in small owned business to help pay wages instead of corrupted CEOs.

Every single dollar matters when it comes to small businesses, since they don’t have other stores available like Walmart or Target. It has been researched that the average income of small business owners with about one year of experience is about $34,392 to $75,076. Imagine being the owner and trying to recover from just 1 day of no sales and not being able to pay bills. This could affect millions of small businesses and only benefit large corporate businesses. Though it is true that Buy Nothing Day has been in existence since 1992, it still has many people willing to ignore it and continue to purchase items to their fill on Black Friday and every day of the

year.
Moreover, this idea could expose the environmental and ethical consequences of overconsumption but it would be infeasible due to people needing supplies to live. We have been used to overspending every day and there is not a day where I would go to a Target and see about 10 people in there. Black Friday has influenced us to spend on deals that are too good to pass on and with that being said shoppers have spent about $3.3 billion on that day. Have people even thought about if mothers needing supplies for their baby like milk, pampers, or etc. We wouldn’t be spending any money so that would affect the people and eventually the economy.
Nevertheless, the economy would be a huge dilemma if we end up not spending for a day. Richard Harrison’s paper Buy Nothing Day expresses that this particular day “does nothing but cripple that nation’s economy.” The economy would take forever to regain the revenue lost from just one single day. For example, the stock market crash in 1929 was caused due to unemployment and banks that were failing. This idea could potentially put jobs at risk and maybe see another stock market crash in the future.
In conclusion, all of these factors prove that it won’t be a good idea to use the idea. It will only be benefiting the big corporate companies instead of small owned businesses. It could also set the economy at a bad start and it´ll be nearly impossible to get everyone to not spend that day. We have to think about everyone instead of a particular group.This could damage people’s lives as well as the future of the economy.
