The administration told me that school was a safe place. A place where you could educate yourself, strive for a fruitful life, and grasp at amazing experiences. As I walked through the hallways, I felt like I was trapped in an eight hour day of worry and fear. I worried about when I was going to be bullied and I feared on how I was going to be bullied. The worst part is that I took the steps to solve the issue like a gentlemen should. I told the administration my problem, but the bullying continued. My friends wouldn’t help because the bully was older, bigger and they didn’t want to get into trouble. I decided to take matters into my own hands. After being kicked in the back of the head, I clinched my fist, turned around with my heart pumping, and punched that boy across the face. I saw the terror and surprise in his eyes
I was sent to the office and I simply told them, “I warned you.” I received two days of out of school suspension for that. My first and last suspension. The bullying ceased, but I believe students should be able to defend themselves in school without consequence. Bullying is a problem that affects schools all over the nation. According to bullying statistics.org, one in four students are bullied at some point in their school career. Eighty five percent of these incidents are unseen by teachers and staff. Teens in sixth through tenth grade are most likely to be involved in activities related to bullying. (School Bullying Statistics) Unfortunately, all over America, students are waking up afraid to go to school and if their concerns aren’t heard, what are their options? “Victims are left with three unhealthy options: to continue to suffer, to stay away from school or to retaliate.” (Weddie) The quote states that retaliating is an unhealthy option, but which one will get the best and quickest results?
