There are many obstacles that a person my face in his life but a hard one to overcome would be bullying. Bullying is when a person feels the need to belittle, emotionally, or physically harm another person due to differences in appearance, culture, or language.(Merriam-Webster, 1882) These reason are by far the only reasons on why a person may bully but they are a few of the most common ones seen. It may seem like causal fun to joke about another person but it can be very damaging to the person on an emotion level causing lifelong problems. A person that is bullied can develop low self-esteem/ self-image, turn to self-harming techniques, or commit suicide to stop the pain.
A person’s self-esteem or self-image can be extremely effected by bullying. Bullying may seem like a fun at the time but the consequences can be very damaging to the way a person sees himself or how others see him. Bullying has a negative effect on a person’s self-esteem and can make him depressed in life, but this is not just limited to the person who is bullied but also the person being the bully. (Seals, D., & Young, J. 2003.) When a person is bullied he start to believe the comments that are made about him and he can start to think less highly of himself. If a person has low self-esteem it came make him care less about himself or others. If having a low self-esteem makes him give up on others he may become withdrawn from people that he once cared for dearly, which can make him become lonely and self-kept. If he would start to care about himself less it can make him stop thinking he is important and of value, which in return can make him stop trying in life and give up on his dreams or goals. Something that effects a person’s self-esteem also effects the way ...

... should be taken care of when any situation arises. It can be painful for someone to admit they are a victim of bullying but it is important to be aware of another person’s daily habits, a small change in daily behavior can be evidence that he is being bullied. It is important to be able to notice differences in behavioral actions, is he keeping to himself more, or acting in a differently in a social setting, if so speak up. Become an advocate for people who need help but are not getting the attention that is needed. If it is too much to handle as a single person go to a school administrator, parent, or other adult supervision, let him know you are there to help. Being proactive and being of aide to a victim of bullying plays an important role in preventing him from developing low self-esteem/ self-image, turning to self-harming techniques, or attempting suicide.
As a parent, it is most important to listen to your child. You need to be compassionate to what they are going through and not to dismiss their feelings. You could say things like how does that make you feel? You can’t change what other’s do, so it is important to focus on strategic ways of coping skills. Find out what strategies they have tried thus far and see if something is working, or doing more harm than good. It is important to practice or role play the different techniques. You can give your child ideas until you are blue in the face, but unless you practice with them, they won’t be able to stand up to their bully. They need to practice to build up the confidence and know what exactly to say, as to not feed into their own emotions. It is so important for schools and parents to continue to find solutions for resolving and preventing bullying.
Ultimately, having low self-esteem can ruin their teenage lives. In his article, “Bullied at School, Bullied at Work: a Prospective Study”, Lars Peter Anderson informs us that “Self-esteem refers to the global and evaluative view of oneself “and”…self-esteem has been found to be associated with bullying” (Moore qtd. in Anderson). Therefore, a teen having low self-esteem results in poor academic performance, health difficulties, and shyness around others. However, this could be avoided when someone intervenes and stops the teen from being a target of bullying. When a bystander enters the situation and encourages the victim, the teens self-esteem is boosted, which results in the teen developing good interaction and communication skills, leadership, and great academic
“To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.”
As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. To the schools that think bullying is not their problem, they should know that according to heyugly.org, an anti-bullying campaign, “Approximately, 160,000 children a day stay home from school in fear of being bullied.”They also point out
Parents and schools play a significant role in stopping bullies. The research states “the families of bullies are lacking in warmth and closeness and focused on power and dominance.” (1) To prevent bullying, parents, school staffs and all adults have a role to play. Help children who experienced bullying to understand that it is unacceptable behavior and how to stand up to it. Communication is always the key. Adults should listen to children, know what is going on around them, friends, school, and understand their concerns. Encourage children to build their interest and hobbies, this will boost their confidence and help them to make friends. Gather parents and children together is a great way to prevent and protect from bullying.
When someone first thinks of bullying, their perception of the bully may be someone who chooses to be mean or cruel to another due to their own low self-esteem. This concept however is one that may not be true at all. In fact, according to Jaana Juvonen, a professor of developmental psychology at UCLA, who has published multiple books and articles on this subject, a bully usually has a very high self-esteem and is usually from the group that one would consider being the “popular crowd”. Bullying is a major issue in schools and is a factor in fitting in. Almost all students in high school either have been bullied or have bullied someone. Bullying can be split into two major parts: psychological and physical. While both are very harmful, many debates have been had as to which is worse. I am of the opinion that psychological is worse, because it can really push somebody over the edge. When people constantly harass you or call you names it starts to take a toll on your confidence and self-esteem, and as is said in the poem “To This Day”, it “Seems like every school has...
Bullying has been a problem for many years. Many people have been bullying in school and over the internet on social network websites. Not only bullying hurts the victim, but also the bully and everyone around them. In this advertisement, a kid raised up both of his arms with these words “stop bullying” written on his hands. His eyes showed the sadness and the depression that words cannot describe. Even though this advertisement seems simplistic and plain, but it is carrying a strong message that can persuade readers to think and take action against bullying.
Why do people bully? Some people bully because they are afraid. When people are afraid of something or someone, they decide to bully. People choose to bully, because they think it make them cool. They think if they bully people, others would want to be like them. They believe it would help them fit in with the people around. They think it would help them be like someone who everyone else look up too. They want their friends to see how bad they are or how bad they try to be. Bullies are not as bad as most people think they are. Some people bully only on small people. You don’t see to many bullies bullying on each other. Even bullies are afraid of each other. The bully think since they are bigger than another person, they have more power. Some people even bully others because they may be getting bullied somewhere else. They may come to school and bully someone else to get their mind off of what some else are doing to them.
Many people don’t realize the profound effect that being bullied has on a person. Victims of bullying live their lives differently than other people, because they are often not living their lives with wholeness. Wholeness is “the balancing of all the parts of the self to create a dynamic and harmonious order” (Unit 6 Reader). Bullying affects one’s ability to be whole by giving the victim a sense of self hate, impairing their relationships with others, and influencing the way that they make decisions. The bully’s ability to be whole is also affected due to the actions that they are taking to purposefully hurt others.
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face. Over the years, bullying has been looked at as being so ordinary in schools that it is continuously overlooked as an emanate threat to students and has been lowered to a belief that bullying is a part of the developmental stage that most young children will experience then overcome (Allebeck, 2005, p. 129). Not everyone gets over the extreme hurt that can come as an effect from bullying, for both the bully and the victim. Because of this, we now see bullying affecting places such as the workplace, social events and even the home. The issue of bullying is not only experienced in schools, but the school environment is one of the best places
A major effect of bullying is the way it can change the victim 's personality. It may cause someone who is regularly self-sufficient and full of joy to become anxious, and hesitant. Consequently, victims may even become depressed or suicidal. Their self-sufficientness could possibly flee, keeping them from experiencing
Problems usually have solutions. Solutions could be extremely easy to find, or the process of finding one could be problematic. One worldly issue that does not have a solution yet is bullying. Bullying is present in schools world-wide, and it has been this way since there have been schools. This horrible act is accepted as part of life. People are used to bullying, that it almost seems normal. This should not be the case. Bullying is a horrific act that needs to be stopped, but is that possible? Three specific ways people have proposed to stop bullying is to criminalize bully in an attempt to deter any further bullying, to assign bullies student mentors in order to have someone guide them, or to force school or parental figures to be more active in trying to prevent bullying. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, but which is the best method to effectively stop bullying?
Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others. Having the students get involved seems to have the most positive effect on the bullying issue in public school systems.
