Should animals be used in laboratories for research? Each year, nearly 25 million animals are used in laboratories for research. Animals are hurt and killed for science for many private and educational institutions, household products, cosmetics companies, and government agencies. I am against this, innocent animals that cannot defend themselves. I have a couple of reasons why animals shouldn’t be used for research. First, because many laboratories and institutions harm animals. Second, because they are traumatized mentally and emotionally. Lastly, they’re many other testing technologies developed now that are able to replace animals. Us as humans are these poor animals voices, we need to stop the use of animals in laboratories.

laboratories live very stressful and unnatural lives. About 68,493 thousand animals are used daily for laboratory testing. The vast majority of animals used in labs are mice, rabbits, dogs, cats, chimpanzees, and sheeps. These poor animals are used for medical, product and cosmetic testing. During the research and testing, animals are injected with diseases and given new drugs to see how well it works.Theses types of testing is not necessary, animals do not react the same way as humans do towards these products. Human diseases do not naturally occur in animals. Therefore injecting an animal with a human disease leads to inaccurate results. Many animals undergo chemicals being forced up the noses, dripped into their eyes, and forced down their throats. They also go through major brain damage, blindness, and burning of their skin. These animals feel as much pain as much pain as humans do. Many of these animals often die before the end of the studies. Animals that often survive are being killed after the study has been completed. Laboratories often paralyze certain body parts of the animal, to prevent the animals from moving around. Anesthetization, euthanasia, and intubation are procedures used in labs that cause so much discomfort and pain to animals. Vivisection is the cutting up of a living animal, it is practiced in so many institutions as a learning process. The testing of these products causes millions of animals to suffer and die from poisonous chemicals. Many animals have died due to scientific experimentation. The experiments performed on the animals lead to human-like depression and anxiety. Being locked up in cages, leads to abnormal behaviors like aggression and self-injuries. Many animals are crammed tightly in cages with many of the same species. It is very traumatizing to them being in cages, it harms them mentally. They’re unable to make choices or show their natural behaviors, they never get to experience sunshine or fresh air. Most effects of animals being locked in cages cause them to hurt themselves. They start pulling out their own hair, start biting their wounds, and hurt themselves. These animals experience many physical, mental, and emotional pain. The environment they’re put under is very stressful for them. They start developing anxiety, and become very aggressive. Animals cannot show suffering as humans can, that is what destroys them mentally. Not being able to ask for help and being forced to suffer affects them emotionally. We’re in a new generation, technology has developed so much.
This can replace animal experimentation for good. A new more developed technology created by James Hickman that mimics the standard human muscular function. This new technology allows researchers to watch muscular functions and how they respond to different treatments without having to use animals. Harvard’s Wyss Institute has created “organs-on-chips”. This chip can replace animals being used for drug and disease research. Some companies have already begun replacing animals for these chips. Science has really evolved over the years. You can now use just a small sample of a person and be able to use it for testing. You can also use a deceased human's body and use it for research. They’re more companies developing that do not use animals for testing. Many companies are now turning against the use of animals for testing. In a few states they have already passed laws where laboratories cannot use animals for testing. They are forced to use other methods to experiment.
Right now millions of animals are being used for testing around the world. They sit in cages afraid, wondering what will happen next. They jump around in their cage when someone passes by wondering if they will be used next. Many of these animals tested are for such pointless reasons. Most of the time, researchers never know if the methods they use really worked. Researchers pretty much take advantage of poor innocent animals just to test new products. Animal experimentation needs to stop. We need to do something about this, we cannot just let animals suffer and be killed. We are these poor animals
voices.
Over 100 Million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in testing Labs every year. Animals are used to test the safety of products, advance scientific research, and develop models to study disease and to develop new medical treatments all for the sake of mankind. Animals should not be used for scientific research because animal testing is inhumane, other testing methods now exist, and animals are very different from human beings.
Animals are used as a part of experimentations in order to accomplish new openings. A few individuals think that it is satisfactory, while others contend that it is not moral to sacrifice animals for science. Estimated, that fifty to one hundred million of animals are used for tests in the world. Despite the significance of experiments, the quantity of animals and purpose of research are not under any control. Animals testing should be banned under a few circumstances; we can enhance the situation by using alternative ways such as replacement, reduction, and refinement according to International Society for Applied Ethology.
Animals should not be used as test subjects for any research. The innocent and helpless animals’ rights are being violated when they are involved during animal experimentation. These unfortunate animals do not have a choice whether or not they want to be involved in testing. They are not intended for people to experiment on for their own selfish reasons. It is not right to take advantage of the animals because they are helpless and cannot protect themselves. Animals and humans have similarities; they both behave, feel, think, and experience pain. Therefore, animals should be treated with the same respect as humans. The pain and suffering an animal is forced to endure is not worth any new product. It is cruel and inhumane to take advantage of an innocent animal. These tests that use animals to ensure the safety of products are extremely common without people even knowing about it. It is not fair to these animals to abuse their beauty. They are helpless and cannot control what is happening to them. Animal experimentation should be stopped because it violates the rights of animals and harms or even kills the animals.
According to the California Biomedical Research Association, almost every medical advancement in the last 100 years is a direct result of animal testing and research. The use of animals has become standard procedure in a wide range of testing and experimentation, including product toxicity testing, biomedical and veterinary experiments, drug development and testing, and education. Major advancements in treating and understanding chronic conditions such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, malaria, and tuberculosis, have been achieved due to animal research. Also, the development of pacemakers, cardiac valve substitutes, and anesthetics are also direct results of the testing and observation of animals. On the other hand, many people believe that animal testing is cruel and inhumane. In many laboratories animals are subjected to force feeding, food and water deprivation, physical restraints, and infliction of pain. Because the animals cannot protect themselves, many people argue that exploiting animals to better the lives of humans is wrong and should not be permitted.
Sadly according to the Humane Society International (HSI) article About Animal Testing “in the United states alone around 26 million animals are tested each year for medical and commercial research” (HSI) even though animal testing is not required to ensure that the cosmetic being sold are safe. From those 26 million animals being tested most are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act. The animal welfare act does not include birds, rats and mice bred for research, and it doesn’t include cold-blooded animals. Animals testing should be banned because the animals tested suffer immensely, also animal tested is unethical, and because there are many alternatives.
The testing of animals is rising from pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies because the companies are spending billions of dollars on animals testing in order to make products safer to humans. Test animals are also treated poorly and, because of how they are treated, the animals begin to act differently. The substances cosmetics companies inject into animals are very harmful and torturous to animals, so most animals end up dying or being severely handicapped from then on. Most of the findings and conclusions from animal experimentation do not end up working the same way with humans. Enormous amounts of money are spent on animal testing each year when there are better ways to put the investments for better benefit for our country. Advancements in technology should be used to speed up and improve the process of developing cures for humans instead of continuing to torture innocent creatures. Although animal testing is still being used, the European Union has banned it completely. There are many alternative ways that are in the process of being made but ultimately we need an alternative method that bans animal testing completely.
Right now, millions of animals—including mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and monkeys—are locked in tight cages in laboratories waiting in fear for the next terrifying and painful lab experiment to be performed on them. (“Animals Used for Experimentation”) Such testing is used for things like biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and general cosmetic testing. (“Animal Experiments: Overview”) Animal testing should not continue in our world being that animals have rights similar to us, rights to live a life free of torture, free of being held against their will in a laboratory. Furthermore, animal testing is inhumane, it violates the lives of all animals used in such testing, it is very expensive for the inaccuracy of the results we obtain from it and it is unreliable as animals differ from humans in many ways. (“Pros and Cons of Animal Testing Facts”)
There should be more restrictions on how the animals are treated and the situations in which they can be experimented on. Hundreds of millions of vertebrate animals worldwide undergo animal experimentation each year. The animals being experimented on can become severely injured or sick because of what is tested on them and because of the conditions they are kept in. Over the years, many laws and regulations have been passed to improve the conditions in which the animals have to live. Testing on these animals has created multitudes of scientific breakthroughs. However, animal testing can be very cruel and can lead to the animals being killed or re-used for other experiments after if they do not die during the procedures. Using animals for testing should only be used for necessary experiments that need to be tested to save the lives of many people and should be regulated to not endanger or abuse
“The question is not, can they reason, nor, can they talk. But can they suffer?” (Bentham). Each year over a hundred million animals endure a number of experiments in an attempt to make human lives easier. These experiments range from cosmetic testing to medical research, sadly neither of these tests are needed. Many people will accept animal research because they believe that these animals aren’t suffering (“Harm and Suffering”) or they believe that animal testing in beneficial to humans. In reality, these animals suffer for mankind, when the need does not exist. Animal testing creates unnecessary pain and suffering for animals, when in reality most experiments will not benefit human health.
For thousands of years scientist have been performing vivisections on animals to find information on new chemicals, drugs, and vaccines. Vivisection is when scientist perform dissections among living animals mostly for the purpose of educating and retrieving information. Experimenting on animals has become the tool that has helped us comprehend the body functions of an animal and how a disease transforms the bodily functions, but over the years it’s caused animal rights activists to question the usefulness and the sincerity of using animals for this purpose. Although animal research has been helpful in the past, it is morally wrong in the sense that experimenting on animals is not the only way to collect information. There are other alternatives
Throughout history, animal testing has played an important role in leading to new discoveries and human benefit. However, what many people forget are the great numbers of animals that have suffered serious harm during the process of animal testing. Animal testing is the use of animals in biological, medical, and psychological studies. The development and enhancement of medical research has been based on the testing of animals. There are many questions being asked if animal research is good or not or if the benefit for us is way greater the abuse of animals. Doing tests on animals can help find ways to cure diseases, but testing on them is wrong. Although we want to find cures for diseases to help many people, testing on animals not only brutally hurts them but it also denies the animals the rights they have.
Every year there are tens of millions of animals like rats, dogs, birds, and farm animals that are killed to discover new information on medical discoveries, product testing, and for educational purposes. Many believe animal testing is inhumane because just like humans, animals feel pain as well, but others believe we should not treat animals as moral equals. However, in the recent years there have been new products introduced to decrease the use of animal testing or even possibly completely stopping it.
Hundreds of millions of animals die every year from animal testing in the United States. Innocent animals are used everyday in laboratories for biology advancements, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic testing. They are used to provide information to make better products that are safe for human use. Although animal experimentation has some benefits, the negatives outweigh the positives. Animal testing is killing off innocent beings for the possible human benefit, and with modern technology, there are alternative ways to test products that leave animals unharmed.
The people claim that, animal testing infringes animal’s rights, makes animal suffering in the experiments, and some of animal experiments may never be useful to human beings. This is true, but we cannot stop animal testing. According to the article “Facts about Animal Research” by Cook (2006), the smallpox has disappeared from the earth because scientists get vaccines from cows. Also, the scientists got insulin, which is the only drug, which can control diabetes, from dogs and fish. Many medicines are related to medical animal experiments, we cannot give up medical animal experiments.
Every year, thousands of animals are tormented, and then die during the animal experiments. Another fact is from Vivisection Information Network, there is a rough estimate from the European Union that 10.5 million vertebrate animals were used in animal experiments, which is 28,800 per day or one every three seconds. Around 18.5 million animals were used in the USA per year (Updated). Also, there are still a large amount of animals that have not been registered. Even though there are disadvantages and disagreement in using of animal experiment, there is also some evidences show that animal experiment is inevitable for the future progress, and the human beings would not have greater life quality without animal testing.
