Right now, millions of animals—including mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and monkeys—are locked in tight cages in laboratories waiting in fear for the next terrifying and painful lab experiment to be performed on them. (“Animals Used for Experimentation”) Such testing is used for things like biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and general cosmetic testing. (“Animal Experiments: Overview”) Animal testing should not continue in our world being that animals have rights similar to us, rights to live a life free of torture, free of being held against their will in a laboratory. Furthermore, animal testing is inhumane, it violates the lives of all animals used in such testing, it is very expensive for the inaccuracy of the results we obtain from it and it is unreliable as animals differ from humans in many ways. First and foremost, animal experimentation should be discontinued because it is an extremely cruel act towards animals themselves.

According to the Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force-feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation and the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies. Additionally, in 2010 the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that 97, 123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being refused any anesthesia for relief. (“Should Animals be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?”) No animals deserve to be treated with this kind of cruelty in a sad attempt to benefit human health. Prior to testing, it is a known fact that the animals may never survive or live past the testing. This is because the drugs they use on the animals may be very lethal, some even causing instant death upon exposure. Consequently, animal testing should not continue because the lives of many innocent animals are unnecessarily taken away due to the

testing.

Similarly, animal testing is futile because it is very expensive, costing millions of dollars in research funding each year. Scientific professionals in the US estimate that approximately $20 million in taxpayer money has been used on animals experiments which are deemed “arbitrary and pointless.” Animal testing generally costs more than other methods because of all the additional equipment which is needed to properly take care of the animals. (“Pros and Cons of Animal Testing Facts”) The additional equipment needed ranges from the animals needing to be fed and housed to the high cost of laboratory equipment and the drugs used. In addition, the high ticket price of the animals themselves must be taken into account. This can be the most expensive cost of them all, as the animals are typically acquired from companies which breed animals specifically for scientific experimentation. (“How Animals End Up in Laboratories”) Therefore, animal testing is redundant on the grounds that it is exceedingly costly for something that doesn’t provide us with accurate results.

Continually, animal testing is an unnecessary evil because it can provide us with misleading or inaccurate results. In the late 1950’s to early 1960’s, the drug thalidomide caused around 10, 000 birth defects and thousands of fetal deaths worldwide. This drug was originally thought to help reduce morning sickness in pregnant women but tragically turned out to be quite toxic. (“The Tragedy of Thalidomide and the Failure of Animal Testing”) There are many differences between the human body and the bodies of animals, which cause animals to be rather poor models of human beings in lab experiments, as shown in the above example. Animals will never be completely capable of modeling the human being in lab experiments. They don’t react in reliable, consistent fashions to the drugs like humans would be expected to. This commonly causes lab results to be inconclusive. In the odd case where the testing is deemed successful, it does not mean it will have the same desired effects on human beings. Accordingly, animal testing should be terminated because it provides us with inaccurate results.

There are hundreds of animals are killed on a daily basis for scientific research, yet somehow people seem to find this acceptable. But imagine your favourite pet being killed for the same reason. Would that not be considered tragic? Animal testing is not a necessity in testing products for human use today. There are plenty of alternative methods being developed that could more accurately give us the precise results we need. Animal testing physically harms animals in ways which are unnecessary and can be avoided. It is one of the most expensive ways of testing and is often deemed irrelevant and inaccurate in regards to human health. Overall, animal testing is avoidable in our modern world because of all the alternative methods which can cater to delivering more human-relevant results.
