Pit Bulls Should be Banned
Owning a pit bull puts your and others lives in danger. Pit bulls were bred to kill dogs in dog fights. All dogs can bite, but pit bulls are more likely to kill when they bite than any other dog. It is not the dog’s fault, but that does not make them less deadly to people and dogs. I think all pit bulls should be banned from America’s communities, towns, and cities.
Pit bulls were bred to kill dogs. They tend be more irritable and aggressive than any other breed. We can’t fault the dog, but it is still a danger to humans and animals. Pit bulls have a way of biting that is called “bating,” which means the pit bull will bite without releasing until the victim is dead. They were selectively bred to be able to win

in a dogfight, and they have an instinct to kill. They were bred to be able to kill in a pit, hence the name pit bull. There are other breeds that tend to be aggressive, like the Jack Russell Terrier, but a Jack Russel won't kill you as easily as a pit bull can. Many individuals from different parts of the US have reported their pets being mauled to death by pit bulls, and such cases just go to demonstrate the vicious nature of these animals. It is true that pit bulls tend to be very loyal and loving to their owners, but it is also true that these animals have powerful instincts that drive them to attack other dogs and even human beings. Many communities, cities, and towns across the U.S. have banned the breed labeled pit bull. The breed called pit bull includes “the modern American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and any other dog that has the substantial physical characteristics and appearance of those breeds” (“Pit Bull,” Wikipedia). Those cities and towns have banned these dogs due to their aggressive nature. This is especially true when people end up in areas that pit bulls believe are theirs protect. Unlike many other dog species that may let go of a victim, a pit bull rarely let go of its victim, and its powerful grip often results in a fatality. Kiro 7 News reported last year a UPS worker who was trapped in a yard with five pit bulls near Puyallup, Washington on September 13, 2017. He was just making a delivering, when he was attacked by five pit bulls and called 911 to get help when they cornered him on top of a trailer. While he was calling 911, the pit bulls were tearing at his legs and arms, trying to pull him down. An example of pit bull’s one-track mind is that they will keep biting till the victim is dead. Often owners refuse to accept responsibility for the actions of these animals. The residents on the property stated in a court of law that these where not their dogs and the property owner cannot be reached to determine whose animals these were. There was a woman, at the attack site in Puyallup, watching from behind a gate while this delivery driver was being torn apart by five pit bulls. The battalion chief said in his report, “When she was ordered by the fire battalion chief to open the gate she told him “F—k you and They are going to kill him.” : Kiro 7 news reports, “At that point the Battalion chief made the decision to drive his vehicle through the gate of the home, which had been closed, to rescue the UPS driver. The battalion chief pulled the UPS driver through the window of his vehicle, backed out of the home's driveway, and went on to the hospital. A Pierce County Animal Control officer returned to the scene later to take the dogs and was injured in the process. The dogs were taken to the Humane Society in Tacoma and they will remain in quarantine for 10 days.” (Kiro 7 news) The hearing examiner ruled that the dogs be euthanized in December of 2017. The owners of these dogs rarely accept accountability for their pets’ actions, instead choosing to blame attacks on the animals’ natural instincts. It is only natural that if an animal attacks, bites or even kills, the owner should be looked for, so the owner can be accountable. While the owners of other pets in most cases accept accountability for their pets’ actions, the owners of pit bulls often defend the actions of their animals and tend to blame the victim for the actions of their pit bulls. In 2017, only seven dog bite fatalities out of thirty-nine total fatalities, involved other dog breeds in the U.S. dog bite-related fatalities report. For an animal that make up about six-point-five percent of the total U.S. dog population, Pit bulls were responsible for seventy-four percent or twenty-nine of these deaths. (Dogsbite.org) Breaking down these statistics illustrates that a US citizen dies every three weeks due to a pit bull attack. Continuing to legalize these animals can therefore be taken to imply that greater importance is being placed on the lives of these dogs than on the lives of human beings. Pit bulls are a low percentage of dogs in America, yet they have killed and maimed the most people.
There are those individuals who may argue that pit bulls are loving pets that only suffer negative publicity from the media, the facts on credible websites speak a different story. In many of the incidents the owners have said that the dog had never done anything like this before. Pit bulls who live with good owners have still hurt and killed people and other dogs. According to the Channel 11 news in Mooresville, North Carolina, “A 5-year-old girl sustained serious injuries Sunday afternoon after she was attacked by her family's pit bull, officials said.” Officers said, “The dog had the child by the head and shoulder and continued to be aggressive when emergency responders arrived.” This was the family pet, just minutes before this the pit bull attacked the little girl, it had killed the neighbor’s dog. If the owner is at fault, then why aren't badly treated Golden Retrievers and Labradors killing and maiming people? The reality is that pit bulls are dangerous dogs. Pit bulls are bred, not trained, to kill, and the statistics speak for themselves. Pit bulls need to be banned. breed? Humane Societies often euthanize pit bulls. I think that this is because there is more risk of animal-to-animal aggression and they have serious socialization problems. The Dogsbite website states, “I've seen many instances in investigating fatal dog attacks of pit bulls that were bred for the fight trade, that these were animals that were simply has never learned to distinguish between another dog and a small human being.” (Dogsbite.org) How many times do we have to hear that a pit bull has killed another animal before we stop the breeders from breeding more pit bulls? We hear that pit bulls are sweet and well behaved, until they are not!
This change in behavior is often without warning. Pit bulls have been bred to hide the warning signs because in the pit it can telegraph their moves. Pitbull’s labeled as “family pets” have often been the aggressor in children or friends being bitten severely or fatally. We don’t hear that a chihuahua has locked their jaws onto a child or that a child’s whole face needs stitches because of a Labrador Retriever bite. These other animals don’t lock their jaw and go for the kill, like a pit bull does! All pit bulls should be banned from communities, town, and cities.

The reason why Pit Bulls are aggressive is because it’s their nature and that’s the way they’re born. Everyone that is afraid of Pit Bulls says it’s the dog's fault and that it's their nature to fight and kill, but honestly it’s the owners fault for making them that way. “‘Though Pit Bulls have strong jaws and, like most dogs will hold onto their prey after biting it. There is no evidence that a Pit Bulls jaw are anatomically different from those of other breeds’”(Lallanilla). They are more likely than any other breeds to grab a hold of something and shake it. The reason why
Pit bulls, like any other dog, grow into their temperament. The way the dog is raised rounds out their character and general temperament. According to the “American Temperament Test Society: Pit bulls pass temperament tests 84.1% of the time, which ranks them slightly better than golden retrievers (83.8%) and cocker spaniels (81.7%), and well above miniature schnauzers (78.6%),” (The Biting Truth). Myths have generated atrocious attitudes towards this breed for years. The nature of the dog to be a protector to children and the bulky build of pit bulls makes them a very easy breed to target. These opinions ...
What words come to mind when one hears the words “pit bull?” How about aggressive, violent, or dangerous? In many cases, this isn’t actually true. Because of the negative media attention for attacks on humans and other dogs that pit bull breeds receive, many Americans place a stigma on pit bulls, tagging them as dangerous and vicious. This stigma typically applies to all pit bulls, not just the ones that are actually dangerous. To remedy the issue of dangerous dogs attacking other beings, the legislative act known as breed-specific legislation is being debated throughout the United States. Gary J. Patronek, a veterinary doctor, defines breed-specific legislation as a law than “bans, restricts, or imposes conditions on ownership of specific breeds or dogs presumed to pose greater risk of biting people” (788). Breed-specific legislation is commonly debated in communities that have recently experienced a dog-bite related injury or fatality (Patronek, Slater, and Marder 788). However, this law would ban all dogs of the pit bull breed or any related dog based solely on their breed, rather than disposition. Therefore, breed-specific legislation should not be enacted throughout the United States because is biased against pit bulls and is ineffective in reducing dog-bite attacks by ignoring other aggressive dog breeds.
If all other breeds are not judged for attacking people, then why are all pit bulls being unfairly judged? Pitbulls are being banned in different counties because they are being wrongly accused of being dangerous. Pit Bulls should not be banned because they can be helpful, the media has given them a bad reputation, and they are only mean if trained that way.
A menace to society, lurking in the streets, just waiting for its next victim? This couldn’t be further from the truth for most pit bulls. These fantasised versions plague the breed, outlawing them in many cities, states, and even some countries entirely. These bans are called Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), and in over 700 American cities these laws are in effect. They are in place to decrease the number of attacks by dogs.
In 18 August, 2011, the source of this event is from Herald Sun. A four-year-old lovely child named Ayen Chol was mauled and killed by a pit bull cross while she was playing in her home. The vicious pit bull escaped from a neighbour’s yard and mauled Ayen in a sudden attack. The dog rushed inside the house and set upon Ayen and some other children who were watching television. Ayen’s mom tried to beat the dog away from the children with a table, but she failed. Then the dog turned on Ayen and the vicious injuries caused Ayen’s death. Dr Cam Day, who is the RSPCA’s Queensland pit bull expert, has claimed that American pit bull terriers are ‘head, shoulder, feet and everything else above other breeds’ in terms of their capacity to injure and maim. If the government doesn’t ban pit bulls, these tragedies would continue to happen and children’s lives would be threatened all the
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. (Davis)
Are pit bulls the best breed of dogs to keep around the house? Pit bulls are the majority of dog attacks that have been covered by news stations. The news coverage has made people really nervous about these animals. People are afraid to let these dogs be around their families and friends. Since then, there has been a constant argument about whether or not this breed should be allowed to be kept as a pet. No one looks at pit bulls as normal dogs anymore. They are viewed as monsters. They have a crazy amount of strength, speed, and stamina. This can be used against them or for them depending on who is debating the issue of their legality. The debate is that they could use these traits to serve their families or to hurt
I don’t think it is fair to conclude all pit bulls are “vicious” based on the actions of one. I believe towns should punish the deed not the breed. For example, my dog’s previous home had to surrender her because one of their neighbors calling the local city office and complaining that they thought she “looked” like she may hurt one of their children. If she was a teddy bear dog, there wouldn’t have been an issue. Second, not all dogs are raised by the same owners; therefore, they have different attitudes and personalities. Some pits are not as fortunate as others to have nice homes and owners; however, this is true with other breeds of dogs as well. When they have nice owners, they are proven to be loyal, strong willed, obedient, stubborn, and
It is the bad owners that give the pit bull a bad name. Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids(TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better. The dogs that are forced to fight and are conditioned to defend themselves or die. When these dogs get loose, everything is a threat to them and they defend themselves in the name of survival. If golden retrievers were bred and raised with the sole purpose of fighting to the death, they would be just as dangerous as pit bulls. On the contrary, if all pit bulls were bred and treated as family dogs, they would have the same reputation as golden retrievers, if not better as the statistics found in the temperament test above
Pit bulls have been known as “the pet” for drug dealers, and other bad people. They have been known to be “the pet” for those people because of the fact that they attack people and other animals. Bruce Goodwin once said,” You can say all you want about these other breeds, but ‘pit bulls’ are the choice for drug dealers and other bad folks for a reason.” If you want to keep people safe, a ban on pit bulls is the best idea.
Are Pit Bulls deserving of being banned from the United States? Are breed specific laws effective? Is there a better way to handle dangerous dogs? Pit Bulls have many people who believe that all should be put down and that they are a dangerous breed. These people do not understand that there are many other ways to handle the situation, that having these laws can make things worse or not change anything, and that each dog is an individual. I believe that breed specific laws against dogs, Pit Bulls especially, are ineffective and I will explain why exactly these laws should be removed and how alternative routes would be better.
Media reports pit bull attacks and barely ever reports about other dog attacks. Pit bulls are about the nicest dog there are. Fifteen dogs that bite says, “Coming second out of fifteen dogs in thein their ranking. With an outstanding 86.8% with kindness. 84% of fatal attacks were neglected or abused.” In some people’s opinion, such as the media, say that pit bulls should be banned but other people have a different opinion. Until recently, you would only hear about pit bull attacks over time. Often when another dog breed would attack they would assume it was a pit
There are indeed many reasons why Pitbulls should not be banned and among these is the vicious nature of pit bulls. As much as there are those individuals who may argue that Pitbulls are not loving pets that only suffer negative publicity from the media, the facts on the ground speak a different story. Many individuals from different parts of the US have reported their pets being mauled to death by pit bulls and such cases just go to demonstrate the vicious nature of these animals. It is true that pit bulls tend to be very loyal and loving to their owners, but it is also true that these animals have powerful instincts that drive them to attack other dogs and even human beings. Not only are pets viciously attacked by pit bulls on a daily basis, but also human beings are also often attacked by pit bulls. This is especially true when people end up in territories that pit bulls believe are theirs. Unlike many other dogs species that may let go of a victim, a pit bull rarely lets go of its victim and its powerful grip often results in a fatality.Even though all these facts are true, I still don’t think that they should be banned.
“In the 70s they blamed Dobermans, in the 80s they blamed German Shepherds, in the 90s they blamed the Rottweiler, now they blame the Pitbull, but when will they blame the humans?”. As Cesar Millan explained in the quote above, today people like to judge groups on the fault of one individual, an example of this is how people look at pit bulls. The way people are seeing these dogs are costing the lives of many pit bulls because states are banning them as household pets. I believe that the bans on pit bulls should be lifted because, the pitbull ban does not solve dog attacks, pit bulls are not naturally born to be aggressive, and pitbulls can be rehabilitated to be the friendliest dogs.
