Ramey1 Whitney Ramey Dr. Bland English 111 20 October 2015 Freedom to Roam A zoo is a fancy name for saying animals held captive for money and entertainment. People think that zoos are society's way of “helping” endangered species. Corporations that run zoos say that by having them live in captivity, they are preserving their life span as well as the duration of their species, but most animals in these zoos are not endangered at all and therefore they are not helping them in any way. If they were really wanting to help the animals they would fix the cause of the endangerment rather than torturing them inside confinement. The article clearly states that zoos are not able to provide a place for these animals to live permanently because clearly we cannot recreate what mother nature does, but rather for short periods of time to revive them then set free again. When we take them out of their natural habitats they can become physically and mentally unbalanced meaning that if you take a baby from it's parent, it can become severely depressed and unable to function or opposite, if you take the mom away from the baby the mother can become hostile. “Many animals held in captivity begin to form abnormal symptoms referred to as “zoochosis.” These neurotic and atypical behaviors occur as a result of boredom, depression, frustration, a lack of mental and physical enrichment, and removal from their natural habitat and social structures”(“Last Chance For Animals”).
