Music is a language spoken everywhere in the world. No matter where you are, it's the same twelve notes. People all over the world love listening to professional musicians, but those musicians have to start somewhere. Most musicians start in school. Many kids in school bands have the potential and skills to become a famous or professional musician but their bands are lacking in funds to help them grow as a musician. Band has many opportunities for kids, but it can also be more expensive then other classes at times. Band is an incredibly important class to many students, that needs to be funded more to bring more opportunities not just to band students, but to non-band students as well. Let's face it instruments over all are expensive, and many bands don't get enough money to replace them. Wind instruments need reeds, brass instruments get dented, and percussion are constantly breaking mallets and sticks , and though hopefully not as often, the many different percussion instruments of different shapes and sizes are broken relatively easily as well. Most students use school owned instruments, which means more then one person has/is most likely using that instrument. Accidents are bound to happen! For example …show more content…
Without music, most people would have a sense that something is missing. Not all students are in band, but one way or another, weather they realize it or not, their schools band is most likely an important part of their school experience. Music makes the world a brighter place. People everywhere like listening to other people play music of some sort or another, by people they know personally or someone they have never met in there life. With out a well funded band it makes it harder for band students to enjoy playing music, and it makes it harder for the people who enjoy listening to them, have that opportunity to hear them
Band is family. When your student walks onto campus, he or she is instantly adopted into the strongest society on campus. They will be spending their school days among the top achievers on campus, with fellow students who look out for one another and steer each other away from trouble instead of towards it. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers watch over all the kids as if they were their own.
The budget for schools were reduced from $68.2 billion dollars to $59.0 billion in one year. With a $9.2 billion dollar cut in budget, schools will have to have sacrifices, and “with current state standardized testing and requirements for academic standards, core curricular classes will always be safe” (Dickson) music programs are the first to go. Music programs are not courses that get tested in, so they are not seen as an important factor to school boards. But when classes that do not have the rigor of other subjects they are not seen as crucial to the academics of a student. With the funds cut for schools, and the money still needed for books and paychecks for teachers, there are other ways to earn money for extracurricular activities like band or choir. “While music programs saw an average budget increase of 11 percent during the 1994-95 year, more than half of that now comes from outside fundraising” (Archer), like car washes, coupon cards, and bake sales. While band and choir take up lots of funds, for instruments, uniforms or robes, and trips the group may go on, fundraising takes most of the costs away. With fundraising, costs for music programs will not be as much as they would be without it. The students get more out of fundraising than they would with it being just a class where they studied and got homework. Music gives them ways to actively see what it is like to perform in front of the community as well as
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
Band is an elective given in elementary schools through college schools around the world. Many schools come together and compete with one another. School bands also perform at football games, basketball games, and in parades. Most school marching bands are accompanied by a color guard, a group of performers, who add a visual interpretation to the music by using props, flags and rifles. A school marching band apparel includes a military type of style, the school's colors, along with the school's name and mascot. It is important to have band as an elective in schools because it helps kids display their emotions and maybe for some it is a hobby. Band directors have said that having band helps young emotional development, helps contribute to a more intellectual culture, builds teamwork and self confidence. It is hard to imagine being in this amazing class and coming upon these out of the box stereotypes and misconceptions of being a nerd, lazy or unathletic. These stereotypes and misconception mainly come from basically movies, shows and books things that are being aired. For example, a kid show, spongebob, kids from ages three to twelve are watching these shows maybe even teens and adults. A spongebob episode fifteen, season two is titled “band geeks”, putting this low degrading name on the group of kids performing at football games with instruments
I am not from a very musical family, so band opened up a completely different world to me. Participating in band allowed me to be more well rounded in my school activities and created a better sense of culture with in me. Playing saxophone in our high school band was an extremely enjoyable experience, I personally enjoyed listening to my part and corresponding parts. Listening to the tones of each individual instrument, as a perfect harmonic sound protruded. It was relaxing as it was a break from my rigorous course load. Band gave me the opportunity to be creative, which was generally absent in my daily life. Having the opportunity to play a musical instrument has also enhanced my intellectual abilities. Studies have shown that playing
The American school system has been put under an immense amount of stress in the past few years. Funding has been moved, held back, and/or taken away from various classes. However, one of the largest fights for funding is found in music education. Without funding, music classes are unable to properly educate children in music. With more and more money being taken away, the youngest generation is growing up with less musical intelligence.
Ever since I was young, music has been a big part of my life and how I express myself. Music became an extremely important part of my life during my early teen years when I truly began to change physically and mentally. I began to have new experiences with others and began the process of figuring out who I really am. Without music, I do not know how I would express myself or how I would have endured my adolescence.
Whether the student is a beginner, or someone who has studied music for a number of years, the way in which one views oneself as a musician can be an important factor in the kinds of experiences one has with music. A quality music education is one that challenges students to set clear and achievable goals, think musically and critically, and apply what one has learned in a meaningful way. If a musician harbors a negative view of his or her musical abilities, the lasting effects of this view on his or her musical experiences and achievement could be challenging to overcome.
Money, fame, and promiscuity are the three main components of the American Dream, and what better way to get to that level than through music? The truth is, almost any other profession has a higher statistical chance of achieving this goal. Musicianship is a nearly impossible career plan to survive with. An artist will spend incalculable hours learning and mastering their craft, only to be oppressed by the community. No matter how much time or money a musician spends on his/her creations, the world will typically find a way to avert their success.
Marching band is a lot harder than the average person would think and a lot of people underestimate it. Teachers/band directors have to be P.E certified in order for band to count as both a fine arts, and P.E credit. Even if many people say marching band is only a competition, I believe it should be classified as a sport because it’s very time consuming, it takes a lot of hard work, and the definition of a sport.

Having music in your life is very important. Music is one of the most powerful things in the world today. Many people make a lot of money making music because of its popularity. It may not be the same genre of music, but everybody likes it. Personally music helps me from day to day. When I am stressed I listen to it to calm me down. When I am sad I listen to it to make me happy. When my spirit is down I listen to gospel to bring it back up. Without music I do not know what I would do. I believe that there is music for every person and problem they may have. It helps me, and I know it will help
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Without music, life would be a mistake”. Music is almost as old as the human race and is as much a part of it as anything. So why would anyone choose to get rid of it? An Increasing number of schools across the nation are deciding to cut music education programs. This includes band, orchestra, choir, and general music classes. In 1991, 55.4 percent of public school eighth-graders took part in music classes at school. In 2004, this figure was just 49.1 percent. Money plays a huge role in this statistic: “...when funds are scarce, arts courses are usually the first to be dropped from a school’s curriculum” (“Arts Education”). While many argue that music education is an unnecessary cost for schools, it improves student’s overall well being.
Accidents in the workplace can happen at any time, regardless of how attentive or careful you are. However, some employers feel that 80% of every accident in the workplace occurs due to an employee carelessness; employees fail to take the necessary precautions before starting their daily tasks (Gordon, n.d.).
From my experience of playing with an orchestra and also a band, I have boosted my team skills, perseverance, responsibility, interaction, and stage fright, all of which are important aspects of being successful in life. While being a part of a band or orchestra, it 's essential that you learn to cooperate with those around you in order to make beautiful music together. The time and effort that it takes in order to learn how to play an instrument teach the qualities of patience and perseverance that almost every musician possesses. Responsibility is also taught while maintaining your instrument in working condition or such as remembering to get to your performance, rehearsals, and making it on time to practice. Being a part of this musical community can also greatly affect anyone 's social skills. Being surrounded by many other musicians who share the same interests as you, makes it easy for a person to open up and create strong
