A recent controversy in schools is the battle between textbooks and tablets. Textbooks have been in effect in schools for ages now, but recently schools have been changing to tablets. Kids are definitely more attracted to tablets than textbooks, what with all the new technologies they are discovering, but the truth is they really are not the best option. Tablets have numerous problems that do not come with textbooks. Schools should not switch to tablets and should continue to issue textbooks to students to better their education.
There are many health issues that come with the addition of tablets that can deteriorate students health. The use of tablets causes students to look at a screen for an extended time period, which can cause eye health

Having tablets means purchasing the tablets themselves, the software, the wifi structures, and training staff and administration how to properly handle this technology. The average cost of textbooks in a high school class is about 180,000 and switching to tablets would cost 430,000. Many schools can not afford this change and it would take around 10 years if the current spending costs stay the same. Tablets require an extra amount of money taken out a school’s budget, meaning they would not be able to provide for some of the other activities they have. Students using textbooks do not pay for them, but with tablets, they are usually forced to pay some type of fee. Also with budget cuts, schools would naturally make parents pay more for them. The expensive cost of tablets is something that is not needed on schools and families, when we already have perfectly good …show more content…
Tablets may be more captivating to minors, but it has no other benefits that can not be resolved with textbooks. Textbooks have a plentiful amount of advantages both academically and in health. Learning and schoolwork can already be extremely stressful and difficult for most students. They do not need added tension due to not having internet access, the system shutting down, or a glitch. Changing schools to tablets could change students, teachers, and parents lives for the worst if we do not continue to keep textbooks in
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Nevertheless, he also like digital textbooks because it has a feature that allows to highlight and mark the
Chromebooks are way better then paper.Because paper goes to waste and chromebooks have a ton of space for your writing ,work and other things. Plus nothing goes to waste. Papers also get damaged easier and they are harder to keep track of. If you have bad handwriting which most teachers hate. Chromebooks have fonts so you can type fancy or normal. Also it’s easier to do work on. You can get more information from websites even some videos. Even if stuff is blocked we can still get to what we need for our work and the library would need more computers because kid will need to get there information somewhere.
Khristina Janer, a mother from Illinois, says, “I don’t feel like a parent. I feel like a drill sergeant!” when making her kids finish their homework after an extended period of time (Wallace). Many studies show the effectiveness of homework and all of the benefits it can do for us; the problem is: teachers are making kids do too much homework when they get home from school. The teachers don’t take in the environmental factors that could be harming any student 's ability to get a task done. Teachers automatically believe that kids are irresponsible or unmotivated when they don’t succeed in finishing their homework. When kids are given this much, or this difficult of, homework, sleep is being sacrificed. Even when they are doing all of their
Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that is it stupid.” Sir Ken Robinson stated that schools are destroying children 's creativity with their curriculum, there are many facts that support this idea. Students are required to think a specific way, prepare the way teachers want them to be prepared. Students also have their own opinion, because they are not afraid to be wrong, and need a way to move forward.
Aside from this many people still argue that there is not a gap in education. Education is fair, america is fair. If a boy living Chicago, well below the poverty line, wants an education he can get it!

Today’s society, children are born on different educational levels. Some children can learn things easily and others take a little more time to understand the lesson. In general, people learn things at their own speed and time. The way a person learns is a technique that is suited for him or her. However, this progresses the rapidity and quality of the person learning. There are different learning styles that a person learns of such as, visual, verbal, social, solitary, aural, logical or physical. Every person has a combination of learning technique. Some
People are convinced that technology is an effective tool that will further learning. This can be true, but when you use tablets
Education is a huge topic of controversy, society is always trying to reform what we know as education today. Right now, the first 12 years of education are entirely free for students directly, but in the end are paid for by the taxpayers of the town. The question is, why should only grades k-12 be free why not a college education too? On the other hand, there are some exceptions to free schooling at the k-12 levels. The most prominent being, Private schooling, most towns in the United States have at least one if not many private schools. They require a certain amount in tuition for each of its students every year. An example of this, in my town Salem, NH one of the most known private catholic schools is St. Joseph 's. I had a good friend a few years back
Should students’ textbooks be replaced by laptops? One study done by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) found that 77% of K-12 teachers found technology to "increase student motivation to learn”. Laptops should replace textbooks because they're more Eco friendly, cost less in the long run and are easier for students to carry.
Tablets can help improve the way students attain their studies. According to Cam Lincoln “Students who used the iPad version of the textbook scored 20 percent higher on standardized test versus students who learned with traditional textbook”(parag.2).This demonstrates that, students who used the iPad version of the textbook learned more effectively than the students who learned with traditional textbooks. The iPad clearly shows that it can help improved test scores. According to National Association for the Education of Young Children “for children with minimal exposure to technology or limited engli...
Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
Education is one of the most important aspects of our society. By educating Americas youth we are molding the minds who are going to run and find new solutions to the problems are country faces today and for the future. However education, in general, is facing some serious problems. One of the most important aspects in running anything, including a school, is finances.
