Technology is an ever-changing evolution. Parents and teachers need to be tech savvy to keep up with the new trends and advances in technology. It is even more important to know about updated technology so that teachers know how to keep students safe. There are so many various ways students can find harm using technology. The main focus should be to teach students how to be safe on the internet. Some of the harmful things that can be found on the internet include; cyber bullying, inappropriate content, predators, and identity theft, just to name a few. They need to know if they see something inappropriate they need to tell an adult right away. Talk to students about what good values are and what good character traits are. Ways to minimize the potential risk of inappropriate content is installing a filter, blacking or monitoring software. Setting up Internet guidelines will also be helpful to minimize students coming across inappropriate content. Many school districts already have filters, blocks or monitoring software, if inappropriate content is still showing up let the technology department of the school district be aware of the situation so it can be addressed and fixed. As students get older their use of technology and Internet use expands. Second, third, and forth graders start to spend more time online. Some ways they might be connected to the internet is through gaming sites. Many gaming sites have built in chat or instant messaging. Also some games require an email to register. Cyber bullying is using technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person. Ways a cyber bully can bully a person using the internet is by writing hurtful things through instant messaging, text, or online games, posting derogatory messages on social networking sites, by posting and sharing embarrassing photos or videos, and by creating a fake profile in order to humiliate a person. Slang used for cyber bullying is flaming, trolling, and happy slapping. Flaming means that internet users are being hostile or offensive to each other. Trolling is when someone tries to start fights or likes to upset people on the internet. Happy slapping is is when someone assaults a person and then post a video of it for amusement of others. Other ways students can be cyber bullied is identity theft to impersonate, photo shopping, and physical threats. Signs that a student might be being bullied via the internet include; avoiding technology, withdraws, avoids conversations about technology, having low self-esteem, depression, fear, or declining grades. Poor eating and sleeping habits are also signs.
