Stairway to Heaven? “The only thing that’s standing between me and my education are these stairs.” This was a remark made by a student as she started her walk up the staircase by the Smith Field House. I’m sure most students have felt this same way as they approach what seems to be the longest staircase in the world. Everybody who has walked up these stairs knows that the climb to the top is no easy task. BYU should invest in a shuttle that will transport students to the top of campus so they can get to where they need to go without having to walk up 106 steep, laborious steps. This specific staircase is causing students to miss out on opportunities to get a better education. A student at BYU recently dropped a class that was held in the RB, just so she wouldn’t have to climb up those stairs twice a week. She …show more content…
College students are very busy with school, jobs, and a social life. There’s a lot going on and it’s hard to balance it all. Finding time to exercise can be very difficult and the stairs are a convenient way to get in a workout. When you take the stairs you are able to get a little bit of physical exercise in but it doesn’t interfere or take away from your schedule. I agree that the stairs are a good way to get in exercise, but the stairs are right next to the student athlete building. All of these students have already done their workout for the day and are very exhausted. Sometimes the athletes are required to walk up the stairs multiple times in one day in order to get to practice, class, the training room and study hall. Some may argue that the shuttle takes longer than the stairs and is bad for the environment. Those who don’t want to wait for the shuttle or want exercise can still take the stairs. The shuttle would be nice so those who have already exercised are not required to take the stairs. It would also be nice to have a warm way of transportation during the cold winter
Elvis Presley changed the music world as they knew it back in the 50’s he came out with a wild new style unlike any other. Even to this day if you hear Elvis’ name you automatically think of his signature style or as the king of rock and roll. Hound Dog was controversial for it’s time and made extra controversial by Elvis’ moves and how the ladies would swoon and storm the stage to see him. Presley was so ahead of his time that most adults didn’t because of his so-called vulgar ways but the younger generation went crazy for Elvis and his new style of blues meets country hence creating rock and becoming the king.
It has been said that addiction is the plague of the 21st century. In an age of unprecedented life expectancy and medical breakthroughs, people are dying from both disease and overdose that are self inflicted and the cure is currently out of reach. Implementing progressive ideas such as safe injection sites have been a battle, both for caring social workers and front line emergency workers looking to minimize the health risks associated with risk taking behaviors that inevitably occur with intravenous drug use. While the addicted population currently uses considerable government funding by way of shelter services as well as prison and jail time, safe injection sites are a necessary step in the battle against drug abuse as is a major prevention
According to biblical texts, in the beginning, God created the first man, Adam and made him a woman, Eve. He gave Adam a woman, not a man, so that the human race can maintain a man/woman relationship. For thousands of years homosexuality has been misconduct or in the church’s case, sin. We are continuously beset with this controversial topic and have since reached a point where homosexuality is more open and more accepted than ever. Now, gay men and women fight for the right to be legally married in the United States. In Christianity, marriage is a lifelong commitment under God and many Christians believe this is a “major sin.” However, no matter the relation of man and woman or man and man, Homosexuals should be allowed to have a lifelong
Parking legally by the residence halls is almost impossible. Students who live at particular dorms find themselves faced with the problem of having to park on the other side of campus. Students who live in the valleys comment that they are surprised with the numerous tickets that are written every day and how it isn’t always clearly spelled out where they can park. They complain on how some parking spaces involve lengthy walks in the freezing cold weather, and how easily the lots fill up. Whenever I'm riding with someone and they have to park by my hall or any other, they usually park in the 30 min parking and leave their car there for hours, or in the faculty lots to avoid walking from the lot up the hill. These actio...
The only circumstance where business could not be shifted to the lower level, would be the case of a jury trial. That's because the municipal courtroom only has seating for eight jurors; felony cases require 12 jurors. In that case, anyone unable to use the stairs could be excused from jury duty and arrangements would be made to ensure safe movement of an incarcerated inmate to the
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
Eggs came first. Millions of years before mammals, eggs existed, their hard shells unlike her mammalian sister who waddles around, heavily crippled with the burden of her womb. Eggs conferred evolutionary advantage.
Music plays a major role in life for most people. It can soothe and excite, encourage sleep and encourage dancing, we can sing to it and ponder it. There are so many different uses of music and so many mediums through which to play it such as Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, etc. Beyond that, more songs every day there are new songs being written. Statistics show that ninety-five percent of all Americans think that music is a core part of a balanced and well-rounded education. The same study showed that ninety-three percent of Americans thought music belonged in the public schooling system, and seventy-nine percent even suggested that music education should be mandatory for all students. Still, studies show that a staggering twenty percent of high school students choose
Janice Lloyd, health reporter for USA Today, states that of the 45.9 million people who reported having a mental illness, only 39.2 percent of those people said they received treatment. With those statistics, it calculates out to be that 27,907,200 people did not receive the proper care that they need. There could be a wide range of reasons why people did not receive treatment, but a large reason is the stigma behind mental illness. It causes the people struggling with a mental illness to be embarrassed of their disorder; sadly, I was one of them. I felt ashamed to admit to my friends and family about my depression because I was deeply afraid of how they might view me differently. After experiencing those type of feelings, it made me realize
In 2008, there were more than 1,977,000 deaths that were caused by preventable risk factors. The top 3 causes of death in the United States are diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms (cancer), and chronic lower respiratory diseases. All these diseases are preventable. People need to start paying more attention to what they’re eating, exercising more, giving up unhealthy behaviors and taking care of our mental health.
America has been the prime example of freedom for many years. It has been the symbol of adventure, self-advancement, and growth. However, American freedom has been stretched to fit into many different categories. There is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to plan parenthood, and now, in Colorado and Washington, freedom to buy and sell marijuana. America has fought the war on drugs for decades. Legalizing marijuana is now seen as an “experiment” that may turn out to be beneficial for the nation. Yet, drugs are never something to be experimented with and drugs will never be beneficial. Drugs should never be legalized; they are not healthy for the body, they affect the birth process, they influence youth in a negative manner, and they increase crime and tragedy.
Student athletes live very busy lives. A typical school day runs from 8:00-2:30, add in a two- hour practice or game, score a part time job, dive into some family time, a grand slam of homework and catch a little bit of sleep. Students are more stressed due to the many activities they are a part of. This issue affects a lot of people not only in this school district, but most other high schools throughout the country. All student athletes exercise more than other children who are not involved in an extracurricular sport. In school athletics, the players are called “student athletes” meaning that school activities come first. There are strict rules for student athletes, not only on the field but in the classroom as well. In physical education
A majority of us want to live in a safe place that is clean and attractive. A lot of us also need to be around people that we care about and they care about us too. People tend to underestimate how important health is and that includes mental, physical and spiritual well being. El Paso County is located in the south eastern part of Colorado and is about 61 miles away from Denver the capital of Colorado. El Paso County sits at 6,035 feet which sits over one mile above sea level, though some areas of the city are significantly higher. El Paso is also near one of the famous fourteeners of America, Pikes Peak. (Source: http://www.medicinenet.com) Mental health is when the mind is in positive role. Good mental health allows people to participate in activities at work and home,

One solution for improving student transportation is offering a shuttle service. Although, UTSA already provides a shuttle service, it is limited to only two routes and can be unreliable. The transportation service at UTSA recommends waiting at the shuttle stop “30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled class time” (Business . . .). The thought of waiting in freezing temperatures trying to hide from the icy rain can be disheartening for some but it is a reality for students whose only way of transportation is through the shuttle. As a result of similar issues, Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, “provides 40 buses on 10 routes complete with GPS tracking“(Horan 52). The purpose of GPS trackin...
