Music plays a major role in life for most people. It can soothe and excite, encourage sleep and encourage dancing, we can sing to it and ponder it. There are so many different uses of music and so many mediums through which to play it such as Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, etc. Beyond that, more songs every day there are new songs being written. Statistics show that ninety-five percent of all Americans think that music is a core part of a balanced and well-rounded education. The same study showed that ninety-three percent of Americans thought music belonged in the public schooling system, and seventy-nine percent even suggested that music education should be mandatory for all students. Most universities require four English credits, at least three math credits, at least two foreign language credits, at least two social studies credits, and at least two laboratory science credits to accept students into the school. However, these schools do look at test scores and students with a musical background do tend to have higher test scores. Additionally, if there is a question between two possible applicants, colleges will look at extracurricular activities. Whichever student has the most impressive list of extracurricular activities is more likely to get accepted than the other. With one of the largest problems facing the music education system being financing, a possible solution could be instituting a system like the pay-to-play system for sports programs. Pay-to-play systems require that all athletes who take part in the season pay a fee to help cover transportation and equipment. During the season, there are usually a few fundraisers as well. Music programs could adapt these ideas to suit each individual school
Throughout history music has played an important role in society, whether it was Mozart moving people with his newest opera or the latest album from the Beatles. Where would society be today without music? With schools cutting their music programs, the next Mozart may not get his chance to discover his amazing talent. Music programs are essential to education. To fully understand this one must understand how music helps the human body, why schools have cut music programs, and why people should learn music.
The budget for schools were reduced from $68.2 billion dollars to $59.0 billion in one year. With a $9.2 billion dollar cut in budget, schools will have to have sacrifices, and “with current state standardized testing and requirements for academic standards, core curricular classes will always be safe” (Dickson) music programs are the first to go. Music programs are not courses that get tested in, so they are not seen as an important factor to school boards. But when classes that do not have the rigor of other subjects they are not seen as crucial to the academics of a student. With the funds cut for schools, and the money still needed for books and paychecks for teachers, there are other ways to earn money for extracurricular activities like band or choir. “While music programs saw an average budget increase of 11 percent during the 1994-95 year, more than half of that now comes from outside fundraising” (Archer), like car washes, coupon cards, and bake sales. While band and choir take up lots of funds, for instruments, uniforms or robes, and trips the group may go on, fundraising takes most of the costs away. With fundraising, costs for music programs will not be as much as they would be without it. The students get more out of fundraising than they would with it being just a class where they studied and got homework. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.

Around the country, schools are constantly cutting budgets on invaluable programs including those teaching important skills such as sports, art, and even music. Music programs are being restricted and even completely eliminated due to cost. According to the National Association of Music Merchants, music programs cost only $187 per student. This is merely the cost of two average school textbooks. Music funds have been cut by 80% in the last five years throughout the country.

In junior high school it is mandatory that you take an art class some time while you are attending junior high. In my opinion students all have different passions so it should not be mandatory, students should however be able to take those classes in high school, but unless you are getting ready to pursue such things in college they will not help you later on.
Many children struggle with subjects in school that they need help on and time is all they need to study and work on their studies. Music programs may put a lot on a child’s tight schedule and cause stress. Music programs shouldn’t be forced into anyone’s education especially if they didn’t choose it. Music programs cause way to much stress, requires money to be spent, and adds on to their responsibilities. Kids shouldn’t be forced to do something they don’t want. They should have a choice.

Music Needs to be Used More in Schools Music plays a large part in many peoples every day lives, no matter what race or age you are. While music does play a large part in our lives, in schools it can be somewhat controversial. Music is so beneficial to our body and minds but some people don’t believe this and believe that music, aside from exploratory classes like choir and band, should be banned in schools. For some people music is an escape from reality and a way to get rid of stress, with the stress that students are put under in schools, music should be more widely accepted. Not only as a class, but also as a form of therapy and healing to the mind and body.
