In 1893 a world fair was held in Chicago Illinois to celebrate the 4thcentenniel of Columbus discovering the Americas. The exposition displayed grand buildings with beautiful architecture, hundreds of exhibits ranging from exotic tribes of Africa, to new inventions, expertly constructed landscape, and astounding attractions such as the first Ferris wheel. The fair lasted for six months and had over 27 million visitors, including ¼ of the American population.
...he building would not be designed the way they are now in the city. The fair allowed Chicago to be the great city it is today and have the magnificent downtown envied by many other cities.
Each tower was 1,362 feet tall. When they were new, they were the tallest towers in the world and they held this record for two years (Abbot 1). The Sears Tower surpassed their record of the tallest towers in 1973 (Aderson 757). After his performance, Petit was arrested (Abbot 1). As part of his sentence, Petit was to perform his tightrope act at Central Park. Subsequent to his performance, Petit has done a number of tightrope acts (“Philippe Petit Biography” 1).
The Exposition held in Paris a few years prior unveiled the Eiffel Tower, possibly the most remarkable landmark of the time. In order to prove itself, America had to create a fair that would at least equal this engineering marvel. The first of the two men was Daniel Burnham, a gifted architect and the Fair's chief builder and organizer. He represents the American idealism that you can achieve the impossible, as was done at the Fair. The "White City" as the exposition became known as ...
The “White City” was a vast collection of architecture and arts that were put on display in the year 1893. The Chicago World Fair, also called the “White City”, was a major event in American history that impacted America’s culture, economic, and industry. The Chicago World Fair was held to honor Columbus’ discovery of the New World. The real reason why it was made was to proudly have back their wealth and power. Larson said, “the tower not only assured the eternal fame of its designer, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel but also offered graphic proof that France had edged out the United States for dominance in the realm of iron and steel…”(15). To accomplish this, architects led by Daniel Burnham and John Root made numerous buildings and beautiful scenery
...re problems with the buildings such as fire, and more storms. However, those events didn’t stop the people from coming and seeing what the fair had to offer. It took several big events to get mass crowds of people, such as a ball at the midway and fireworks on the Fourth of July. In one day the fair had 751,026 people in attendance, from people who paid at the gate and others who had passes . The problems that occurred during the building of the fair did not hurt attendance, and the fair was a success, changing America along the way.
Founded nearly a millennium ago, The Tower of London has been expanded over the centuries. The first foundations built by William the Conquer have been constantly improved. “The Tower of London is the oldest palace, fortress and prison in Europe (“The Tower of London”, “Tower of London”). The Tower of London was never supposed to be a prison. The Tower was originally a Royal Palace also serving as a defensive fortress (“Twenty-Five Facts”). Phil Wilson, a yeoman sergeant, once commented that “hundreds of people have been held prisoner and died [there]” (Go World Travel).
The statue was built in France in 1886 and given to the U.S. as a gift of friendship and commemorating the alliance of France and the United States during the American Revolution. The Statue of Liberty came by boat. Lady Liberty was dismantled into 350 pieces and it took 214 wooden crates to ship to the U.S. to be built again on June 19, 1886. The statue is 305 feet tall. The Statue of Liberty's feet are 25 feet long, making her a US women's shoe size 879.
The Tower was a large construction project enforced by different rulers, building tower after tower (21 in total), “and finally encircling it with a moat whose water was delivered by the Thames River,” (McGillick). Original functions of the Tower included “acting as a royal power base, being a place where an army could be housed and a place that can protect London from invasions, and also is a source of protection for the Royal family during chaos,” (Alchin).
Nearly four million people visited the Statue of Liberty in 2014. (National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy) They were able to stand right in front of the statue themselves and get to experience the feeling of hope, justice, unity, and freedom that our accessories felt when they traveled to America from their home country. There are many theories on why France gave us the Statue. “Many Americans were suspicious of the gift statue and what the motives of its French donors were.” (Perea 46) , but also what the original design of the statue was. Its was to be said that “the original model for the Statue of Liberty was a black woman, but the design was changed to appease white Americans who would not accept an African- American Liberty” (Joseph,

Even though, the Eiffel Tower is a renowned monument for France. Being that it was originally built as an entrance way, some precautions were made. The safety procedures distributed were moveable staging, guard rails and screens. So, only one man died during construction (“Building Eiffel Tower”). The tower stands 320 meters tall, it uses over 18,000 pieces in the steel structure. Each year the high heats cause the structure to grow six inches, but then retracts back after the summer time. So, that is why the idea of thermal rivets were used in assembly because the rivets allow the structure to keep its shape. Over 2.5 million rivets were used (“Building Eiffel Tower”). This construction cost France over 7.31 million francs. The tower was many different colors until they officially settled for bronze. It was red, mustard yellow, and even chestnut brown (“Chisholm”).
Given as a gift by the French people, the Statue of Liberty is a national monument of the U.S. Standing on her pedestal in the New York harbor in Liberty Island.
