WHAT IS SHARK CULLING
Shark culling is killing large sharks that may be dangerous to swimmers on the beach. The Great white shark has been protected in Australian waters since 1998. So, what changed? Since August 2010, 15 people have been killed and 51 have been injured in 2012. This put pressure on State Governments and so, drum lines were placed in the water and shark nets surrounded beaches.

Theses nets are placed around a designated area to stop sharks from getting to areas where people are surfing and swimming. The nets are not a barricade and they don’t prevent sharks from getting near the beach. These nets entangle and kill any animal that is passing by. The 2014 protest started after a second shark was killed and was less than 3 meters. Both sharks were tiger sharks and 2 meters long. The protest started at 4:30 am (AWST) when a 19-year-old woman locked herself to one of the two fisheries vessels used to monitor the baited hooks.
