Malia Lee Marine Biology Mr. Girod April 28, 2014 The Bull Shark The Carcharhinus leucas commonly called the "bull shark" is a very unique shark. The bull shark can live in both salt water and fresh water but is commonly found along the Mississippi River and around Nicaragua. The bull sharks has a very blunt rounded nose giving it a bullish type of appearance thus giving it the name bull shark. The sharks are a dark black to a light grey with a white underbelly. Bull sharks can grow to be about 350 cm long and weigh around 230 kilograms. Bull sharks also tend to have smaller eyes compared to many other sharks which indicates that the bull sharks have limited vision. The bull sharks have triangular teeth like the great white shark (one of the bull sharks cousins). The bulls teeth are heavily serrated and are about 1.5 inches long which makes it easy to tear apart the flesh of their prey. The bull shark may be known to thrive in the Mississippi River and around Nicaragua but are wide spread throughout the world. The bull sharks have an ability to penetrate far up bays and rivers. Some bull sharks have even been found as far as a couple hundred kilometers from the sea. Bull sharks have also been found in Potomac river. Potomac river is located in southern Maryland and is about 405 miles away from the ocean. There has never been a reported shark attack in Maryland which seems crazy now knowing that bull sharks have been found only 200 yards away from the point lookout state park in Maryland. What is crazy is that bull sharks have the abilities to travel in many different environments and depths but tends to stay in shallow waters between 3-30 meters of water. The anatomy of a bull shark is very unique beca... ... middle of paper ... ...o attack humans but usually mistake them for other prey. The bull shark may be responsible for many shark attacks in the world but I believe that we have no right to kill them. Sharks are very important to animals food cycles and if the food cycles get messed up it can greatly effect the world. In fact, the bull shark is more vulnerable to human impact due to their ability to live in fresh and salt water but many sharks that are killed are for either shark fin soup or their liver oil. The sharks liver oil has many uses now but it started as a machine lubricant. Another way that sharks die is by recreational fishing. The sharks can get caught up in the fishermen's nets and eventually suffocate and die. As an environmental community, I feel like we need to inform people about shark habits and how to keep sharks safe. The water is their home and we are
...s. According to studies and statistics done, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a shark. They are often misinterpreted as scary and violent creatures, however this is merely due to media. Shark based films such as Jaw show that these sharks are harmful when they really aren't. Tapes/recordings of sharks slaughtering humans are published so often because of its actual unusualness.
Mojetta wrote about prehistoric sharks, and the history of these creatures. According to Angelo Mojetta, author of Sharks, Cladoselache genus, one of the first prehistoric sharks, was buried in sediment that kept it preserved. Unlike other sharks, Cladoselache genus had a circle of tiny plates around it’s eyes for protection against it’s victim’s attempts to fight back. These sharks lived over 400 million years ago. Sharks of the past could mostly be identified by their teeth, because shark’s bodies are made of cartilage. Another shark that was focused on was called, Stethacanthus. This shark had a very unique look. Stethacanthus had a brush like decoration on the top of it’s head, and an extra fin like part that had the same bristle like decorations on it. These characteristics were thought to be used as suction cups, to hitch rides from larger fish. One of the most famous sharks that looks like an over...
Before seeing this film and looking into it all I was aware of is what was shown on social media, which is what awful creatures sharks are supposed to be. Saveourseas.com had eye-opening statements comparable to the film. There were many persuasive arguments such as “Great white sharks, like all animals, are individuals with individual behaviors and characteristics. As the largest predatory fish, reaching six meters, they don’t have much to fear and are confident and curious animals.” This is a large point in both the documentary and paper. Since most people are constantly worried about how scary the animals are. It is hard for these creatures to get good publicity since our society is so judgmental and believes every detail the media puts out into the world. There are many points that focus on how hunting great whites is becoming more and more illegal, which is necessary for how important they are in the world. These sharks are able to help maintain a healthy balance in the
’’They are gray-brown to olive-green on top with off-white undersides, and they have heavily serrated, triangular teeth’’(National Geographic ‘’Hammerhead Sharks’’ 1).These are the usual colors of sharks. When you visualize a shark, the shark you would see would most likely resemble a bull shark. ’’They they almost resemble tiger sharks, and the problem is that tiger sharks are even more dangerous than bull sharks. To be honest,if you have to be extremely afraid of one species of shark, then it would probably be the bull shark. ’’Among the most likely sharks to attack humans, bull sharks favor shallow coastal waters-the same places humans prefer to swim’’(National Geographic ‘’Bull Shark’’ 1).This means that the bull shark would be the most feared by humans because they swim in the same places that humans swim.
But occasionally the younger sharks are preyed on by bigger sharks that do not necessarily have to be Bull sharks they can be become prey to any larger species of shark and occasionally a crocodile. However there are parasites like Pandarus sinuatus, and Periscopus dentatus that use the surface of the shark’s skin and use it to survive (Curtis). Though that does not in anyway decrease or increase the economic uses for the bull shark, its effects on the environment, or level of danger to humans. In certain places around the world the amount of bull sharks is decreasing slightly, because sharks can be harvested to make fish food, for their meat, for oils, and their fins for shark fin soup, or in asia their skin can be used to make “good leather” (“Bullshark”; Curtis). Even though their numbers are thought to be decreasing according to the International Shark Attack Files, otherwise known as the ISAF, has reported that there have been at least 70 reported unprovoked attacks on humans of which 17 were fatal, but that is only the known number of the reported attacks by bull sharks there most likely have been many more attacks that went unreported (“Bullshark”; Curtis). They are known for being one of “the most dangerous sharks in the world” because they along side the tiger shark, and great white they are the most common sharks to attack a human
Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.
Slung from tornados, having been scooped up from their ocean home, the mountain of sharks featured in the film hardly even look like sharks. In fact, they spend as much time in the air as they do the water.
Everyone knows someone who is afraid of sharks. They might even advocate for the killing of sharks when they hurt someone or wonder why they exist on the first place. Every summer, shark attacks are a hot topic. There are news articles every summer about at least one person spotting a shark close to shore, and it seems like every other summer there is a blockbuster film about surviving a shark attack. Everyone knows that sharks are predators, but not everyone knows that sharks are on the decline. This is because of many reasons such fishing, and specific shark killings. Sharks are essential to our marine ecosystems, and the continued culling of them can cause the extinction of the species as well as a devastated ecosystem within our oceans.
In 2015 only 59 shark attacks have occurred around the world compared to the millions of sharks killed by humans every year. Due to these accidental shark attacks people tend to think that sharks, especially Great Whites are evil creatures with malice intentions when attacks do occur; but, on the contrary that is wrong. Sharks are not the only beautiful and unique creatures in the ocean, they also play a vital role in our ecosystem; however, due to human interference they might not be around much longer, through awareness sharks can be protected from endangerment.
Thesis: Sharks should be conserved because they are an important part of the ocean, attacks are often incidental, and human behavior influences the behavior of sharks.
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
The morphology of whale sharks is mostly similar to aquatic fish species, but many specific traits help differentiate them from the rest. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can reach a size of around 20 meters (Martins, C., and C. Knickle). This is often compared to the size of a school bus. The shark has a very large transverse mouth. They have 5 very large gill slits and have a larger first dorsal fin compared to the second one (Whale Shark). They have a distinctive spotted “checkerboard” pattern with stripes (Martins, C., and C. Knickle). It is not exactly known why they have this specific body marking. It is believed that the body markings act as a camouflage. The strange thing about whale sharks is that they have 300 rows of teeth that play no role in feeding (Martins, C., and C. Knickle).
One of the largest sharks in the world is the tiger shark. The tiger shark’s scientific name is Galeocerdo Cuvier. They are strong, but slow moving, relatively sluggish sharks that spend most of their time near the bottom looking for food. Despite their sluggish appearance, tiger sharks are one of the strongest swimmers of all the Carcharhinid sharks. Once the shark has come close to its prey, a speed burst allows it to reach the intended prey before it can escape (National Geographic).
It also has a lateral line which senses movement in the water. Whale sharks amazingly have 350 rows of the teeth which make the total 3000 teeth. Each tooth is 3 mm thick. The mouth of a whale shark is 4 Feet wide (120 cm). A whale has a complex filtering system. Whale sharks have 3 ridges that run on the side of large gill slits. The spiracle is located near the eye. It is used to breathe. Its skin is 10 centimetres thick. The top fin on the tail is slightly larger than the bottom fin. The tail of the whale shark is half mooned shaped. Whale sharks are slower that most sharks. They have to move their whole body to swim rather that tail. Whale sharks grow up to 9 – 12 meters, when they are adults. The skin of the whale shark is yellow or white blotches. They weigh up to 12,500 kg. The heaviest whale shark was known to weigh 34,000 kg. Whale sharks are curious creature and are friendly to
One particularly interesting sea creature is the whale shark, formally known as Rhincondon typus it was first discovered in 1828 by Andrew Smith (Rowat 2012). This large fish is found globally in warm tropical oceans and prefers to stay within 200 meters of the ocean’s surface in waters ranging from 4.2 to 28.7 degrees Celsius (Stevens 2006). This creature can be found all across the globe in any warm tropical seas. Aggregations of whale sharks have been seen off the coast of Australia at times, although it is primarily a creature of solitude. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume plankton as well as small fish and are harmless to humans. The whale shark is a species with a fascinating ecology, life history, behavior, anatomy
