Shark destruction The film Sharkwater is a documentary directed and produced by Rob Stewart. Rob is an underwater photographer and a biologist that has a fascination with sharks, and their behavioral aspects. His way of studying these creatures he is able to learn about life and how to survive on this earth. This film showed the characteristics of reflexive documentary, this is because of the attention drawn into the sharks, their behaviors, and how we are affecting them. A statement that really stuck the documentary is people are taught their whole entire lives that sharks are dangerous but when you finally see it underwater your whole life can change in a flash. Rob made a very valid point as well, which is believed to be his thesis statement. …show more content…
Before seeing this film and looking into it all I was aware of is what was shown on social media, which is what awful creatures sharks are supposed to be. Saveourseas.com had eye-opening statements comparable to the film. There were many persuasive arguments such as “Great white sharks, like all animals, are individuals with individual behaviors and characteristics. As the largest predatory fish, reaching six meters, they don’t have much to fear and are confident and curious animals.” This is a large point in both the documentary and paper. Since most people are constantly worried about how scary the animals are. It is hard for these creatures to get good publicity since our society is so judgmental and believes every detail the media puts out into the world. There are many points that focus on how hunting great whites is becoming more and more illegal, which is necessary for how important they are in the world. These sharks are able to help maintain a healthy balance in the …show more content…
Throughout the film there are many experts about the ocean and the animals that live in it. Researcher Ritter the misconception of the shark’s species is blown out of proportion by the media, which is why sharks have such an awful reputation. Experts touch up on this subject adding how even one of the biggest movies Jaws is a very large portion from where people get their fears from or it could be from all of the “shark attacks” on the news. Rob discusses how at the rate we are going we can destroy all of the food chains in the marine ecosystem, and this is where most of our oxygen comes from. Throughout the film experts Rob Stewart and Paul Watson are trying to get long lining banned in Costa Rica. Paul makes a really interesting point saying how the biggest problem is that we do not understand what we are and we are just a bunch of “conceited naked apes” that are out of
As they are at the top of the food chain, sharks play a very important role in the oceans in a way that an average fish does not. Sharks keep populations of other fish healthy and in proper proportion for their ecosystem. By preying on the old, sick or slower fish in a population, they prevent the spread of disease and prevent outbreaks that could be devastating. According to Ransom Myers from Shark savers, “sharks may be gone within the next decades if we continue to kill them, resulting in the loss of important foods that we depend on for survival, causing a marine ecosystem imbalance.” At the same time, I accept that shark nets could be useful, especially in shark infested areas that have been renowned as spots where many attacks have occurred, but I still believe, as you would, that scientists should spend more resources on working out why it is becoming more common for sharks to be entering shallower waters, looking for food – namely seals, who just happen to look like
Blackfish is a 2013 documentary attempting to elevate public awareness regarding the orca that are being kept in maritime amusement parks, specifically SeaWorld, and the inherent danger of their captivity. The film is effective because it raises a set of important ethical questions for the viewer while presenting with a necessary fact-based style of documentation that does not evoke gratuitous scenes of abuse in order to inspire sympathy, unlike some of the other films that are intended to raise awareness about animal abuse. The film focuses on one orca, commonly referred to as a killer whale, in particular by the name of Tilikum. The documentary begins as a group of contract fishermen hunt a family of killer whales off the coast of Iceland.
The bull shark may be responsible for many shark attacks in the world but I believe that we have no right to kill them. Sharks are very important to animals food cycles and if the food cycles get messed up it can greatly effect the world. In fact, the bull shark is more vulnerable to human impact due to their ability to live in fresh and salt water but many sharks that are killed are for either shark fin soup or their liver oil. The sharks liver oil has many uses now but it started as a machine lubricant. Another way that sharks die is by recreational fishing. The sharks can get caught up in the fishermen's nets and eventually suffocate and die. As an environmental community, I feel like we need to inform people about shark habits and how to keep sharks safe. The water is their home and we are
This image is what a majority of people believe to be the shark. They believe it to be the bloodthirsty sea monster that appears in countless works of literature and films, but science says otherwise. The classic picture painted by the minds of sailors returning from years at sea come from imagination and sharks’ violent methods of hunting and mating. Sharks fear humans as much as humans fear sharks, and most sharks, particularly the “man-eating” great whites, only bite humans because they mistake surfers for seals. In earlier times, the ocean was a source of mystery and adventur...
Sharks have also been subjected to medical research, games and competitions, jewellery, souvenirs and cosmetics. We need to take into consideration that sharks play a vital role in the natural world that we live in. it is imperative that we look after these majestic creatures and ensure they remain protected. We need to be aware of the dangers of sharks, swim in protected areas where there are shark nets, and do not swim after dark in the sea (especially not alone) as the sea is the sharks home. Humans should also be wearing wet suits as protection in the ocean. The sea is where they live, they swim freely and they eat – they do not particularly target humans but rather prey on food that is available to them in their habitat.

It is not hard to think of the Great White Shark as one of the most feared animals
In 2015 only 59 shark attacks have occurred around the world compared to the millions of sharks killed by humans every year. Due to these accidental shark attacks people tend to think that sharks, especially Great Whites are evil creatures with malice intentions when attacks do occur; but, on the contrary that is wrong. Sharks are not the only beautiful and unique creatures in the ocean, they also play a vital role in our ecosystem; however, due to human interference they might not be around much longer, through awareness sharks can be protected from endangerment.
Attention Gainer: For the attention gainer, I plan on showing the audience a two minute and thirty second video in order to display the tragic events that are happening around the world regarding shark killings. My attention gainer will enable the audience to become aware of the situation as well as invoke a serious and potentially sad mood in the classrooms, before I begin to touch on the terrible situation we have
Furthermore, the documentary references to an actual clip of a SeaWorld trainer explaining to visitors that, “25% of killer whales have a floppy fin as they age.” Although to the common eye it may seem to be the truth, the film reveals that, “less than 1% in the wild” have this condition. By providing these contrasting details, it introduces the viewer to idea that SeaWorld is prone to this type of manipulative behavior which undermines situations involving the maltreatment of orcas and its effects immensely. The use of the “floppy fin” facts in the documentary are purposeful in the portrayal that if the chances of the dorsal fin of an orca increases drastically in
key players of the film named Shawn Heinrichs works for Wild Aid as a marine conservationist. He states that “no other species illustrates what’s going on in the ocean better than sharks” which is significant because they predate dinosaurs and have survived four mass extinctions. However, humans have succeeded in cutting down their numbers by 90% within the Anthropocene (Racing Extinction, 2015). Isla Mujeres was the largest shark fishing island on the east coast of Mexico where at least 20 long liners were targeting sharks every day. The film discusses how this town was successfully converted from a hunting ground to one of the best places in the world for tourists to watch sharks. The community of ex-fisherman made significantly more money
Thesis: Sharks should be conserved because they are an important part of the ocean, attacks are often incidental, and human behavior influences the behavior of sharks.
Great white sharks are the main predators in the ocean. The only things that are responsible for the deaths of sharks are Age, Health, Humans and other sharks. Humans are responsible for 70% of deaths for great white sharks. Today there are more than 440 known species of sharks. Great whites only have 2-12 babies at one time unlike others who have hundreds. Great whites can live up to 60 years old! Great white sharks are phenomenal animals and but still are vulnerable to extinction. Do your part to kill of the rest of them before they kill you!
Erickson, Drew History Mr. Miraya October 13, 2016 The title of my current event was called Man Bitten of the Oregon Coast by a Shark. It happened of the Oregon Coast. The subject is a shark bite.
Well if you happen to have no idea or clue as into what I’m talking about, which I seriously doubt that’s would be the case. Ever saw the movie Jaws and all of the subsequent directed by Steven Spielberg, then you definitely have a great picture of what the Great Whites are and what they are capable of doing to a human and other sea animal, this also label them one of the most dangerous wild life. The Great White also goes by these other names White Pointer or White Death is from a large species of lamniform shark. If you ever trying to locate on...
