Erickson, Drew History Mr. Miraya October 13, 2016 The title of my current event was called Man Bitten of the Oregon Coast by a Shark. It happened of the Oregon Coast. The subject is a shark bite. It happened on October 11, 2016. Summary: Twenty-nine year old Joseph Tanner was surfing off the Oregon coast near Ecola beach and a shark bit his leg. A volunteer paramedic came over to offer his assistances. People were already taking care of his wounds. Shark attacks are rare in Oregon the last one that happened in was in 2011 when a shark took a two foot bite out of a surf board. How this harms the U.S.: it could prevent tourists and other surfers from other state or countries from going to Oregon and surfing. Solution: try and prevent other shark attacks by having life guards look out with binoculars every hour to see if any sharks are out where surfers are and where kids are playing in the water. …show more content…

Dan was involved in the Cement truck incident where 5 family members were killed. After the
Kish, P., 2012. Most Shark fishing is now banned from beaches and jetties in a year-long trial. [Online]
Shark nets have been implemented in locations across the world in response to shark sightings and attacks. Nets are submerged beneath the surface of the water, roughly 200 metres from the shoreline. The meshing is designed to be large to capture sharks, leaving them to struggle before eventually drowning under the weight of their own body. The meshing allows small fish to pass through, however captures larger fish and marine species. Shark nets provide no discrimination between common, vulnerable and endangered species, resulting in a high mortality rate for a variety of marine wildlife.
...s. According to studies and statistics done, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a shark. They are often misinterpreted as scary and violent creatures, however this is merely due to media. Shark based films such as Jaw show that these sharks are harmful when they really aren't. Tapes/recordings of sharks slaughtering humans are published so often because of its actual unusualness.
In recent years, society has brought to light many issues that are in desperate need of solutions. This includes topics such as poverty, racism, and gender inequality. While problems like these are important, society tends to be apathetic towards other issues that are just as dangerous and in need of solutions. For example, violence in teenage relationships is a growing problem that is extremely dangerous, even fatal. Many times, victim does not understand what relationship abuse is or how it starts until it is too late, and the victim is stuck in a relationship that is harmful. Sometimes, people outside of the relationship see patterns of abuse and do not act on the problem because no one tells them who they should report the abuse to or how they can help.
Manta rays, humpback whales, and dolphins are all gentle giants of the sea. These playful creatures enjoy leaping out of water, creating an unforgettable experience for the tourists of Hawaii (Saito). On the other hand, jellyfish and sharks cause fear in beachgoers because their attacks can lead to painful and life threatening injuries. Swimmers in Hawaii are often victimized by box jellyfish. The stings hurt quite a bit and cause an unpleasant burning sensation. Some people even suffer from a severe allergic reaction to the toxin and are hospitalized (“Dangers in Hawaii”). People may also be hospitalized from shark attacks. Three to four shark attacks occur each year in Hawaii, usually resulting in only the loss of an appendage. However, numerous shark sightings as close as twenty yards away from shore to as far as out at sea have been reported. Jan TenBruggencate’s article, "A Shark Bites off Left Arm of Teenage Kauai Surfer,” tells the story of thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton who fell victim to a shark attack in October of 2003. While surfing in Hawaii, a shark estimated to be 12 to 15 feet long bit into Bethany’s surfboard and took a majority of her left arm. Other major shark attacks include Joe Thomson, 1985, who lost his right forearm, Michael Coots, 1997, who lost the lower portion of his right leg, and Hokuanu Aki, 2002, who lost his left foot. Each victim had to fight with the shark to break free and were lucky to escape with minimal
The bull shark may be responsible for many shark attacks in the world but I believe that we have no right to kill them. Sharks are very important to animals food cycles and if the food cycles get messed up it can greatly effect the world. In fact, the bull shark is more vulnerable to human impact due to their ability to live in fresh and salt water but many sharks that are killed are for either shark fin soup or their liver oil. The sharks liver oil has many uses now but it started as a machine lubricant. Another way that sharks die is by recreational fishing. The sharks can get caught up in the fishermen's nets and eventually suffocate and die. As an environmental community, I feel like we need to inform people about shark habits and how to keep sharks safe. The water is their home and we are
However, the fact is, and statistics prove that over 100 million sharks are killed every year (according to the Sea Shepherd website), all around the world and for what reason? Shark culling and the hunting of sharks as a solution to beach safety has not been well received by the Australian public. Whilst it is very clear that we need a solution to protect our bathers and surfers, the Herald Sun reported that 82 percent of all respondents to their
As the grey nurse shark is protected nationally, there are undergoing limited numbers of threats. Potential threats to the species include pollution, collection for public aquariums, diseases from changes in their ecosystem. Climate change causes a number of threats, including a change in water temperature and changes through the marine ecosystem. Commercial fishing, accidental, incidental or illegal fishing is a threat to the population of the grey nurse shark. A slight change to the sharks habitat can overall cause loss of numbers throughout the shark
In 2015 only 59 shark attacks have occurred around the world compared to the millions of sharks killed by humans every year. Due to these accidental shark attacks people tend to think that sharks, especially Great Whites are evil creatures with malice intentions when attacks do occur; but, on the contrary that is wrong. Sharks are not the only beautiful and unique creatures in the ocean, they also play a vital role in our ecosystem; however, due to human interference they might not be around much longer, through awareness sharks can be protected from endangerment.
Information (sub-point): Shark finning also has also drastically negatively affected the entire shark population. According to SharkSavers.org, “Shark populations face the threat of extinction in every part of the world primarily due to overfishing driven by the high demand for shark fins” (SharkSavers, 2013). It is also found that the global shark population has decreased by a drastic 90% over the last 50 years, and if change does not occur quickly, the entire shark population could potentially disappear
Bethany, was much farther out than the rest of them. When suddenly, she felt pressure on her left arm. Then, she noticed something big and gray, a gigantic tiger shark bit down on her left arm, pulling her back and forth. Stated in ”Bethany Hamilton Shark Attack Survivor”, ”The water around Bethany turned red. She knew her arm had been bitten off, but she didn’t panic.” She described this experience as,”I was holding onto my board, with my thumb, because I probably didn’t want to get pulled under. It was like pulling me back and forth, not like pulling me under water. Just like, you know how you eat a piece of steak? It was kind of like that.” After that horrifying experience, Bethany was drove over to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, by
In Chinese tradition, Shark fin soup is called as “a celebration soup”, which people eat it to celebrate in various occasions. Moreover, people also believed that shark fin consisted of diverse nutrition values which provide them virility, wealth, and power(Wolchover, 2011). These beliefs lead to the beginning of poaching for sharks, the top of food chain in the sea world. Surprisingly, although people are aware of the decreasing number of sharks since the old days, around hundred million of sharks are still hunted each year(Heltus, 2013), to be served on luxury tables surrounded by those believers in things that they do not even prove whether the belief is reliable. Therefore, in the generation that people are mostly educated, sharks should no longer have to be continuously killed for their fins.
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
Domestic violence is skyrocketing in our society. In the U.S., as many as 1.5 million women and 850,000 men were physically assaulted by their intimate partner last year, and numerous children abused by their parents. These sad criminal acts will continue to grow in our society, unless our community takes action to stop these crimes.
