It’s 4 p.m. on a Monday. A child sits on the couch playing games on their phone and checking social media. There is much speculation about whether or not what the child is doing is more good or bad for them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization that is committed to the health of children and young adults. They believe that screen time should be limited to two hours a day for adolescents but some argue that the recommended time should be raised to four hours. There is, in fact, more support for raising the suggested limit because technology can increase many brain functions, boost mental health, and optimize social skills. Of these that is most vital, is social skills. Believe it or not, social standing can make or break someone in today’s society. Everyone not only wants, but needs to fit in. Since the beginning of time, humans have relied on each other to help them get through the hardships of life. They survive and thrive best in groups.This is true still today. Science proves that video games, especially multiplayer ones, and social media can help children and teens learn many valuable social skills. They teach adolescents to discern between friend or enemy, bring forth social cues which teens may not pay attention to otherwise, and build communication and teamwork(Gray)(Giedd). The ability teenage and human brains in general have to make non verbal connections and assess their social surroundings is extremely important. In this case, this theory is true but this addiction could be even more destructive than an average drug addict if we do not try to lower this addiction rate. Our generation is suggesting that it is okay to focus more on video games than school work and that it is common if you spend hours on a computer chair that you will develop blood clots in your legs. Social skills play a very crucial part in the existence of every individual. This is for the simple reason that the level unto which the social skills a person(s) has, generally describes the level of co-existence that prevail in that given environment (Sussman, 2012). The way a person describes scenarios, solves problems, analyzes situations as well as the overall communication, all form the basis of social skills. According to Jean Piaget’s theory of social (cognitive) development, it is expected that individuals should be mentally or physically prepared to face the realities of the world. It is also important to keep in mind that these skills would be effective when they are learned in early stages of life. Therefore, social skills should grow and develop when one is in the early years of life.
Yet many people are concerned how this impacts there social skills the everyday face to face contact. When playing video games people limit their self’s to social interaction unless it has to do with the game, a lot of people play online and talk to their friends through a headset. When people have face to face contact they develop skills in learning how to communicate with people and eye to eye contact you don’t get that through a video game. Being in a social environment promotes social skills. A social environment can provide opportunities for one to learn how to behave properly in different situations. When playing video games most of the time the person is alone and confined in room. Meaning there is very little social interaction between the person and the game. When people play video games they play in sessions and they can last a long time even all night. People get so wrapped up in playing these games they blow off their friends and family meaning it’s hard to maintain social relationships.
The final element is social perceptiveness. Good social skills enhance communication, increase effective team building, and reduce conflict while promoting unity (Sattler and Hoge, 396). Teenagers today lack social skills and are glued to their phones. When teenagers are on their phone, they always seem to be on social media. Social media is everywhere now.
