At a certain point in our life we will be tasked in finding the perfect college for us. With so many fine institutions to offer us a higher learning in the United States, how do we find the college that best accommodates us? For this research paper, not only will the academic advantages come to light, institutions that offer great opportunity on the field as well will be known. Every year, tens of thousands of athletes are forced to make not a four year decision but a forty year one when selecting the school of their choice.

A graduate of Stanford University might be perceived to be more qualified for an engineering job than someone who graduated from Grambling State University. Not because they aren’t both institutions of higher learning, but the academic prowess Stanford carries in its name is higher than the one Grambling State carries. The next thing incoming freshman want to know is if the school can place them in a position to have immediate success in their respective field. Often times, students have obtained a degree that can not help them get a job in this market. Students want to be able to get a degree that will help them have an impact in this world immediately. The third thing that students look at is the location of the university. If you’ve been accommodated to a rural setting your whole life, a university in the middle of a fast-paced, urban area might be too much for you to handle. The schools that offer the top academic opportunities may not be as enticing on the field. Athletes with an array of scholarship choices and a plan set in place want to make sure they are picking a school that will best help them be successful on and of the field. According to Niche, the top five best Colleges for Student Athletes in 2016 was Duke University, University of Texas, Stanford University, the University of Florida, and Notre Dame. This ranking took in colleges that have both elite academic programs along with competitive athletic programs that support student athletes on and off the field. List like these take into account that a school like Vanderbilt (Ranked #15 in US by US News Education) wouldn’t be nearly as appealing as other schools because of a 3-9 record in football and a 19-14 record in basketball. Something that Ohio State has implemented to make their program more nationally appealing to students who value education opportunity as much as their athletic ambitions is host an annual Job Fair every year. For example, in 2014, some of the companies that partook in the job fair were Nike, Chase Bank, ESPN, State Farm, and Red Bull. With a school like Ohio State that has such a vast alumni base, their alumni are coming back and giving internships to players in the program and helping them get their “feet in the water”.
