Obesity is becoming a national epidemic in America. It often starts in childhood and follows a child into adulthood. There are several different ways that parents can help promote a healthy lifestyle for their children, from healthy diets to daily exercise, but many times having a healthy family is not enough. It will take America moving towards healthier life choices and away from the fast foods and sodas. America as a nation needs to promote exercise and eating healthy, making it the “cool” and trendy thing to do. There are several different approaches to changing the way people eat or think about foods. Not only do people need to be educated on nutrition and healthy lifestyles, they also need to be shown that it not something that is targeting just them. The fight against obesity is not the responsibility of any one person or group. It will take an entire reevaluation of what we consider appropriate or trendy in our nation. As Judith Warner stated in her article, Junking Junk Food, it took the entire nation coming together and regulating our food consumption during World War II. She states that only by approaching the problem on two fronts were we able to succeed. By educating people about nutrition, and making eating healthy a public concern rather than one targeted at individuals will we be able to make a comeback against this epidemic. Educate yourselves and educate your families. Encourage your schools and your communities to offer programs and materials on education, exercise and lifestyles. Learn the risks involved with being obese and ways to prevent obesity from happening to your children. Teach by example. Show your children that playing outside, swimming, walking, and sports are great alternatives to staying inside all day, and do all these things as a family. Get others involved in your
Radley Balko, The author of the essay “What You Eat is Your Business”, would agree that in order to stop obesity, we must turn this public problem around and make it everyone’s individual responsibility. Instead of inflicting the importance of personal ownership, government officials, politicians and congress make obesity a public problem by prohibiting junk food in school vending machines, federal funding for new bike trails and sidewalks, and restrictive food marketing to children. Overall I agree that this manipulation of food options is not the proper way to fight obesity, however, I think that government should inform people about the food they are eating because then they have no excuses for not taking responsibility of the actions.
Obesity is a complex topic with many different branches. With things like weight loss pills, workout programs, and thousands of diet plans each claiming they 're the best, it can become overwhelming to decipher what the best option is without a tremendous amount of tedious research. This being said, it is often easier to put taking action towards obesity on the back burner with our increasingly busy lives. Obesity has become an epidemic in adults and children in the United States. Moreover, children are at risk of obesity because they do not eat enough fruits and vegetables and do not obtain enough physical activity. Also, children have a higher chance of developing health diseases related to obesity such as hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and pulmonary disease. In addition, obesity in children from ages one to seventeen is an issue in Texas, since children are not aware of the serious consequences of being obese. Therefore, Texas should find ways to prevent obesity by authorizing healthier school lunches and allowing a school program to help obese children lose weight. Also, television advertisements are influencing obese children to make unhealthy choices.
Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active.
Obesity is a serious problem that increases year after year and affects the lives of many Americans. It is a problem that needs to be eradicated, but who is responsible for this problem? Some argue that individuals are responsible for their own weight; that it is a private concern. In the past three decades, the rate of overweight children has increased by 300%. This is an alarming rate that is only climbing higher. The obesity epidemic is one of the most pressing issues at this point in both American society and U.S. public policy initiatives. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 35.9% of U.S. adults over the age of twenty are obese (CDC, 2013). The CDC further notes that 69.2% of U.S. adults twenty years of age and over are overweight (this percentage includes those who are obese). The obesity problem is not exclusive to the adults in the U.S. The CDC notes that 18.4% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are currently obese (CDC, 2013). These statistics illustrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in this country, but what can be done to address or even correct this problem? Many people have proposed solutions, but few are as radical as the proposal from Michael Bloomberg (the New York City Mayor) in 2012.
The constantly changing food science and the way it is advertised is leading people to have a poor understanding of health. For example, many of my friends eat out on a daily basis. Their menu options include McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, Subway, and Taco Bell. Most of the time they will order an item from the regular menu, but when they want to be “healthy” they choose a salad or something from the low-calorie menu. They have grown to believe that these options are healthier alternatives because that’s how they have been advertised, but in reality those alternative options are not any healthier. Americans believe many advertisements and there are many ads the food industry puts out. These ads change as much as the food scientist change their facts. People try and hop on a bandwagon and follow the most popular food trend. Some of the popular trends right now include vegan diets and gluten-free diets. These diets could be healthy but people are not guided correctly by nutritionist when they try and follow these diets, and the people themselves do not know how to correctly follow the diet. When people follow diet trends they limit their options to fit the standards of the diet. By limiting their option people are hindering themselves from getting all the nutrients they need, but they believe that they are aiding their bodies because they

Another way to increase physical activity is to encourage children to join an extra-curricular activity. Although it is easiest to prevent obesity at a young age, many people in the United States grow up obese or become obese. To help and to encourage adults who are suffering from obesity, they need to learn the life-threatening effects that accompany the “heavy” burden.
So what can be done? We cannot just pin the obesity problem on policy makers. It must be examined by academic, medical, and psychological professions among others. Possible changes in the food assistance programs, expanded knowledge of health and nutrition among those in poverty and availability of nutrient dense foods would be a good start. Other areas that might help curb the issue include boosting agricultural subsidies to farmers to grow fruits and vegetables, increased crime prevention, and improved neighborhood recreation facilities.
