Are Transgender athletes hurting College sport and its community In 1975, the landscape of gendered sports underwent a significant transformation with the emergence of Renee Richards, a professional tennis player who underwent gender reassignment surgery and subsequently competed in women's tennis. Richards's pioneering journey paved the way for future transgender athletes, sparking debates regarding fairness, inclusivity, and the integrity of competitive sports. One such athlete who has reignited these debates is Lia Thomas, an NCAA swimmer whose participation in women's collegiate swimming has ignited widespread controversy and raised fundamental questions about the intersection of gender identity and athletic competition. Lia Thomas is a …show more content…
Transgender athletes, like cisgender athletes, have a wide range of athletic abilities.“ Andraya Yearwood,an ACLU client, explains: “One high jumper could be taller and have longer legs than another, but the other could have perfect form and then do better... One sprinter could have parents who spend so much money on personal training for their child, which in turn would cause that child to run faster.”’. people who do not believe that transgender athletes should compete. Believe that because they don't know how they can be accommodated in today's sporting world, but here are some ways that people believe they can. “That is, no definitive level of testosterone is given for M-F athletes—other than stating that 1 year of hormonal suppressive therapy is sufficient for M-F trans athletes to participate in a women's team.” Many believe, as stated in the quote, that with the use of hormone suppressors, they could lessen the divide among the people who think it's …show more content…
“Many believe that it is more important to focus on the trans athlete being more comfortable than the others, especially in youth sports. The bans may have consequences for the health of trans youth, according to a new study by a group of pediatric sports medicine physicians and health services researchers published in JAMA Pediatrics. “A large body of research has demonstrated that physically active youths have improved mental health outcomes, greater self-esteem and social supports, increased school retention rates, and lower risks for chronic disease and teenage pregnancy,” the authors write, noting their concern that the bans could contribute to “lasting deterioration of the physical and mental health of this at-risk population.”’. This quote is just some of the reasons people believe that banning trans athletes or segregating them is going to do more harm than good. It affects mental health and self-esteem for many, and it also affects much more than people may not hear about. In conclusion, there is an ongoing debate about transgender athletes in competitive
If you were in this situation how would you feel? If you're patiently waiting for your husband to come home and you give him a kiss as he returns. As he walks and talks little to you then he puts it out there like it’s nothing. Would you cry or would you be shocked? would you fight or would you fall ? tell how you would feel if you were like mary maloney were your husband's going to leave you like he left her. I think that mary maloney is innocent because her husband was a cruel and not very kind man. Not only was he having an affair with another woman he was disrespectful to her he yelled at her and how do we not know he wasn't abusive to her. His fellow officers called him a “lady's man”. I think that mary should not be convicted of murder.
Her ideas challenged my previous opinion in that I believed that in order for a transgender athlete to play for their non-biological sex was solely to undergo a complete sex. Prior to researching this topic, I was unaware of other methods such as hormone therapy that were available to transgender athletes. Through Castillo’s informative article, I was able to understand that other options are available in order to maintain the fairness and equality throughout athletics. While Castillo argues that transgender athletes must complete at least one year of hormone therapy, Canadian Blogger, Keph Senett, argues otherwise. In her essay, “Where Do Transgender Athletes Fit Into Sports?” which was published in newsletter Matador Network, Senett argues that transgender athletes must complete a full sex change before even considering competing for the opposite sex. Senett’s article did not add much more to my original opinion, nor did it challenge it in any
In the world of sports, it is fairly obvious that people have experienced many costs, including insults, ridicule, and lack of acceptance, but the benefits gained are much more vital to sports and the future of athletics. Competing in sports that are non-traditional to one's gender can only make society stronger, and our culture more unified.
Caitlyn Jenner, twice an Olympic triathlon athlete, was given the ESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Caitlyn now blazes new trails. For so long, she lived a life that her family and society expected of her: a loyal, loving son and father, and outstanding sportsman before her transformation. Her newest role as an advocate for the transgender community may become one of her greatest roles. Presently, Caitlyn Jenner’s purpose is to promote sexual diversity, differences, and respect for all human beings. As I watched Jenner accept her award, I reflected back on my understanding of transgender.
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human Rights Campaign has been started to achieve equal rights for all Americans including the LGBQ community. A serious injustice is in the world of sports. Professional sports are one of societies major traditions totally based on rules and regulations that are meant to preserve the integrality of the games, but may not be inclusive to all its players.
"President Barack Obama unveiled a statue honoring Parks in the nation’s Capital building. He remembered Parks, according to The New York Times, by saying "In a single moment, with the simplest of gestures, she helped change America and change the world. . . . And today, she takes her rightful place among those who shaped this nation’s course."
In closing I would acknowledge that I may be just a little envious of the transgender women. After all they have more testosterone then biologically born women, and this hormone seems to allow them not only to stay stronger longer, but to retain their figure longer as they seem to have better muscle tone. Transgender women also have a certain advantage over men as they are fully aware how a man thinks, and understand them a little better. Finally, these transgender women seem less likely to get involved in drama or screaming matches as some women tend to do, instead it appears when they are disturbed with a conversation they just excuse themselves, leave the room, or ignore the drama completely, something women could learn
On an evening like any other, Rosa Parks boarded the bus home. She paid for her ticket, shuffled to the back of the bus, and took her seat. As the route continued on, the bus began to fill and eventually became jam-packed with passengers. During the era of segregation, it was at the bus driver’s discretion to remove colored passengers from the bus (Rosa Parks Biography.com). When the bus driver asked Rosa to give up her seat, she refused. She was arrested and thrown in the county jail. Her arrest prompted the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which is considered to be one of the most effective protests of all time. Rosa Parks is an inspiration because she sparked social change during a controversial time in American History.
This is only the first step. Research has to start somewhere and this is the foundation of that. The next step is to research about co-ed sports during teen years and maybe even professionally. This topic opens a gateway of research to be conducted because using co-ed sports at a young age can help solve a lot of questions. Youth co-ed sports are not considered serious, as they are not televised and not competitive so it is a good opportunity to introduce society to a new outlook in sports and slowly build on it. Using youth co-ed sports as way to shift the paradigm is essential to diminish these gender roles we have placed and all these stereotypes we have pegged on females and their capabilities. Using this foundation we can start to address bigger issues we see more of in media like the increasing amount of homosexual athletes and how much attention we put on the situation even though people say society is accepting of it. It also brings up the issue of the lack of televised female sports and how disengaged males are with them. Youth co-ed sports have the capability to open up many gateways and channels for society to take a leap forward for the better and challenge the views and standards we have set today and hopefully change them in the
Wangyot is a transgender female, so she was born a man but identified as a woman. Her school administration worked together to come up with a policy to allow Wangyot to compete during the school year because she wanted to participate in girl’s volleyball, girl’s basketball, and girl’s track. Wangyot decided she wanted to participate in these sports because she wanted to set an example for all other transgender students interested in being a student-athlete. In the state championship race, Wangyot placed third in one event and fifth in another. Wangyot showed that there is not much of an advantage to her because she did not win.
In the “Tragedy of Macbeth”, by William Shakespeare, Lady Macbeth changes a lot throughout the play. Lady Macbeth change is her mindest and attitude that made her obvious. She was innocent until she got a letter from Macbeth telling her about the prophecies the witches has given him. She soon becomes cold hearted and starts plotting things against Duncan. She does anything to make her husband the king.
The type of sport adolescents choose to participate in can be considered masculine, feminine, or neutral which causes stereotypes among peers. Society has set the stereotypes for competitive sports based on gender. According to Alley & Hick (2005), “despite legal and social changes, sexist ideology still pervades sport” (p.273). Sports are seen as masculine, male dominated, and males receive higher media coverage and pay than the majority of female sports. The gender stereotype is learned through socialization and “for certain sports appear to be learned by grade school” (Alley & Hicks, 2005. p. 274). Gender role conflicts may appear in some athlete depending on the sport(s) one chooses to participate in, but this can alter by demonstrating acceptance for the opposite gender in sports. It is important to indentifying the social effects of sports participation in both genders and how beneficial it can be to the adolescent. Through sports participation adolescents learn those gender roles are based on self-perception, and not social interactions.
Cis women athletes who want to compete in a professional level are not going to be given a fair chance to succeed and to work up to the top when transgender women who biologically have the body of a male are competing against them. A born male who identifies as a woman and competes as a woman who does not take any hormones makes the situation even more unfair because this means the transgender women competing as a woman has the body structure of man, same level of testosterone of a man, and strength of a man. The reason why this situation is such dilemma is because high schools clearly states that women are to compete in the women’s sports and men are to compete in the men’s sport but as to how genders are defined remains unclear. The book Transgender Athletes in Competitive Sports by Eric Anderson goes into depth about people have started to identify as transgender, the sport policies placed for transgender athletes, some background, and it is a new concept on how some people identify themselves. Consequently, it makes it difficult to know where to place transgender people when it comes to sports.
Now, more than any other period of time; equality has become a hot topic of discussion. One of the major talking points involves the rights of women to be allowed to compete with men in sports on the same or opposing teams. To begin with, let’s ponder if there’s even a demand from the general public for women to be allowed to play on male sports teams. Very few athletes in sports are barely even bothered about the fact women can’t compete with males in their respective sports. If there is no true desire to break down the gender barrier, then it only makes sense to force an unneeded change.
It’s upsetting to know that there are so many trans-phobic people out there who believe gender is natural and bash people of trans simply because they do not conform to society’s gender expectations. It’s important to realize that transgender people are no different from you and I they are humans just like the rest of society. It is also interesting to note a lot of people get uptight and uncomfortable when the topic of transgender comes up .Our society is so ignorant when it comes to the topic of sexuality and
