Caitlyn Jenner: A Model for Living Our True Selves

Caitlyn Jenner, twice an Olympic triathlon athlete, was given the ESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Caitlyn now blazes new trails. For so long, she lived a life that her family and society expected of her: a loyal, loving son and father, and outstanding sportsman before her transformation. Her newest role as an advocate for the transgender community may become one of her greatest roles. Presently, Caitlyn Jenner’s purpose is to promote sexual diversity, differences, and respect for all human beings. As I watched Jenner accept her award, I reflected back on my understanding of transgender. My patient preferred to be called by his female name. She was in her early 30’s and relatively new to Cincinnati from Dayton. When I went to her apartment, I noticed an unfamiliar, unpleasant odor as she opened her door. She offered me inside and we soon started our interview. I decided to wait about halfway through our visit before I asked her about the odor. My patient said that as she was preparing for the day, she was shaving her chest and became repulsed by the sight of how hairy it was. So, she forced herself to throw up and she hated herself. My patient had received electrolysis on her face, but could not afford to have it done all over her body. As she took her hormone treatments, her hair would become less coarse and noticeable, but in the meantime she had to learn to manage the problem. Part of the issue that transgenders face is living in a puritanical society that is ignorant, judgmental, and afraid of their sexual choices. This resulted in how her family ultimately related to her, like Jenner’s and the lecturer’s families did. My patient felt alone because she had little contact with her family, mainly her mother and sister. Her father had not talked to her in a couple of years because of his son being transgender. Perhaps, just the thought of his son wanting to be a woman threatened his sense of his own masculinity. The father may have dealt with his own conflicts by ignoring his

Michelle, kept Keisha’s secret by allowing her to use her swimming clothes. Michelle shows the importance of support from relatives. This is a fundamental factor that might help with the development of her gender identity. Many transgender people may feel a relief at the time to disclose their identity. When transition is in progress the support from friends and families becomes important because, many transgender people might suffer if they lack support. Many transgender people seem depressed because they are rejected by society. Janet Mock, relates how Wendi, support Charles, by making him feel comfortable, saying “Wendi and I grew inseparable trough middle school, a bond that would link us for the rest of our lives. Through association, my class –mates learned that I was like Wendi-who hadn’t yet adopted any labels to describe her shifting self” (Mook 107). In most cases transgender people’s acquaintances can be referred as transgender people just by friendship. The association makes transgender people to gain confidence about their gender identity. The support from groups or friends makes transgender people feel that they are accepted and not alone. Support from friends might urge transgender people to come out the “closet” and reveal their gender identity to gain respect among society. However, due to Jenner’s privilege, she is able to have access to all the best healthcare for gender affirming procedures. Jenner was able to transition swifty, but this experience does not relate for most who often spend decades accumulating the funds necessary for the costly medical care. When considering women’s bodies’ main purpose to be that of reproduction, it is apparent why the concept of transgender people may be concerning; transgender women -- that is, people, assigned male at birth but who live as women -- are women whose bodies cannot reproduce in the way that women are expected to; transgender men -- people assigned female at birth but who live as men -- may still have bodies which are viewed as useful mainly for their reproductive capabilities, but which they do not intend to acknowledge or use as such.
