Gun Control and the Effort to Make a Stand After carefully looking over the numerous topics of current events, I have discovered one that I have the strongest tie to. I have chosen to write my persuasive/argumentative essay over the “Gun Control Debate.” Many people ask, “what are the two differences amongst the gun control debate?” That is simple, you are either for gun control, or against it. What is gun control you may ask? Gun control (or regulation of firearms) is the government regulation of the sale and ownership of firearms in order to control crime and reduce harmful effects on violence.

They also believe that getting rid of guns will result in getting rid of violence, “criminals would continue finding ways to illegally acquire guns while robbing and attacking law-abiding citizens who suddenly have no means of self-defense [or protection,]” (Five Reasons Why) instead the same liberals who believe in a “perfect world” will see that they just create more madness and chaos. “About half (48%) [of our country’s] gun owners said the main reason they owned a gun was for protection.” (Bruce) Many other countries have already made the same proposal and it ended with much more violence than they predicted or witnessed before the action of the gun control. The United Kingdom for example “[banned handguns] from civilian possession, ownership, purchase or sale… as a result of the Second Firearms Act of 1997” (Morris) records show that the rate for intentional homicide in the UK has fallen since this Act was in effect. Yes, due to the Act being in place the rate of homicides including guns has fallen dramatically. However, the overall rate of murder has increased significantly “in 2005, there were 765 intentional murders in the UK and most of these were committed with knives,” (Morris) it goes to show that people willing to kill will do so no matter what. Yes, firearms are extremely harmful and dangerous when in the wrong hands. Although, firearms cannot fire themselves without an operator. Many of the cases in mass shootings involve mental health situations, “we need to target the source of the problem not the tools used;” (Five Reasons Why) if we could provide resources, services and other support to those who are in need then we could potentially put a dent in one of the problems we face with mass
