Equestrian riding could perhaps get considered the most dangerous sport in the Olympics, but why do some people still don’t call it a sport? Many people all throughout the world love Equestrian sports. Although, some people say that horseback riding shouldn’t get called a sport. With many different events that involve horses, horseback riding can get proven to qualify for a sport even if some people in society says otherwise. People who think horseback riding should not get called a sport focus more on their opinions and not actual facts. Both focus on horse riding, but the style and events contain different standards. Most of the formal side of events generally occur in the English part of competitions, while the less formal side appears in Western. In English competitions, most of them usually contain the rider on the horse, but sometimes the rider will stand on the ground in a Halter class. Some of the competitions with riding involved include: Dressage, Show Jumping, Cross Country, Polo, Hunter Seat, Saddle Seat, and Equestrian Vaulting. Also, a three-day event that contains Dressage, Show Jumping, and Cross Country will commonly get referenced as Eventing. Many skills will get used during riding a horse. People may talk about how muscles get used extremely often, and people may wake up with soreness because of all the strength given. In order to ride successfully, connection between horse and rider must become very solid. Aids will act like cues to the horse provided by the rider from the legs, hands, body language, spurs, crop or whip, etc. They help the horse perform certain movements; this requires the horse to respectfully listen to the rider. Horseback riding not only needs a good connection, but many skills that might include: flexibility, strength, balance, memory, confidence, trust, and determination. Horseback riding will not always act like a safe sport. It can contain injury or even death, so riders will always risk their lives every time around a horse. There are millions of cheerleaders in America and all around the world today. They stand in front of hundreds of fans and try their best to get the crowd pumped up. They stand outside braving the cold as they are rained, sleeted, and even snowed on. It’s probably the only sport I can think of where you would have to wear hardly any warm clothing and still have to pump the crowd up. How can you not call that a sport?
A competitor can choose a horse that is more for racing in order to provide a faster horse or a cutting horse that will provide more maneuverability and a smaller bend around the barrels. One ideal is to pair racing and cutting bloodlines in order to produce a horse with the ideal combination of speed and agility. Both of these activities require a high level of animal involvement and therefore need little human participation or even skill. Training a horse to ride is hard work, it involves ground work, riding, and in both patience is very important. In the next few paragraphs I will be explaining the steps needed to train a horse.
