Digital technology is perhaps one of the greatest advancements in human history. For those of us living in the Digital Age, we are in a drastic transitional phase, and we are being changed as much as the tools we use are changing. Our brains are being ‘rewired;’ our cognitive processes are much different and more efficient from what they were yesterday. The debate continues; are the mental changes being made that beneficial? Or is the world on the verge of changing everything it has ever meant to be human.

Although I am able to multi-task extremely well and efficiently, my attention span has decreased significantly. Comprising one of the many results of this drastic change is less development of critical thinking skills due to a ubiquitous store of information. As previously stated, the Internet has its advantages, but it also causes an over-dependence for many; it generates a vulnerability in decision-making to sudden situations and ‘dumbs’ down people by their constant reference to it. With increased dependence comes less comprehension and needful knowledge. The loss of an individual’s humanity is also at stake. Imagine a balance with mental cognition on one side and digital technology power/influence on the other; the more we rely on technology to do our jobs for us, the more we become the technology itself. In conclusion, digital technology and the Internet have enormous potential and can be utilized to the advancement of mankind. Nonetheless, the detriments caused by the modern substitute of electronic data tools are infinite on the human mind and will continue to grow on the path on which we are heading.
