Every day hundreds of dogs end up in the pounds all around New Zealand. Why, you might ask? Well, the problem is backyard breeders. A backyard breeder is a person who breeds dogs without being a registered breeder, who does not maintain the breed standard and temperament. They breed dogs regardless even if they have serious health issues which may be passed onto their offspring causing genetic defects. Backyard breeders do not follow any guidelines in order to prevent these serious conditions from occurring. They do not carry out property inspections to ensure that the offspring are in a secure environment which does not put them in danger. Due to these issues many dogs, various ages are often abandoned and neglected by their so called owners who purchase them from backyard breeders. The reason why registered breeders have a contract which people are required to sign in order to take the dog is that ensures that the proper care will be undertaken, this includes vaccinations, desexing and if the people are unable to look after the puppy or dog that it is given back to the breeder. This will mean that it will give the dog some protection so, it does not end up in the pound or in the wrong hands. Due to backyard breeders not following these necessary steps in order to essentially protect the dog's life many fall into the wrong hands and as a result the puppy often ends up having its own litter which is just fuelling the problem. This is just contributing to the problem of dogs being picked up by the pound either because they are found wandering the streets alone or because the pound has been called by a concerned neighbour about the condition of the dog. WHY CAN'T THESE IRRESPONSIBLE PEOPLE OPEN THEIR EYES AND REALISE THE PROBLEMS OF BACKYARD
