How do things sell? Where do phrases like “sex sells” come from? Advertisements are all around us on a daily basis. Whether you are driving in your car and pass by a large advertisement on a building, or you see an Ad for jewelry in a magazine. The sole purpose of these advertisements is to reel in the consumers. Hook, line, and sinker.
Advertisements help one visually memorize a product, and attract the consumer. They may use propaganda, hooks, repetition, claims, association, bandwagon, and promotions. They can be on television, street signs, poster’s, just about anything that can be seen.

The actor that portrays the most interesting man in the world is always dressed immaculate. His hair looks clean cut, and he is a handsome older gentlemen. Much like a modern day James Bond as they call him. He is always surrounded by attractive, young women. This is where the phrase sex sells comes into play. The slogan underneath her enlarged picture says, “Introducing a breath of fresh air! Flawless coverage with a light as air feel. Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Whether recognized or not, advertisements play a significant role on the way in which consumers make choices. Though society as a whole may not recognize the impact of advertising, commercials and good billboards are still noticed and enjoyed. Even colors are used a way in which to catch the eye of the consumer.
A concept that surfaced in the early 1920’s, advertising is a tactic that has been used to influence and persuade the people to participate in consumerism. Advertisements are all over the place. Whether they are on TV, radio, or in a magazine, there is no way that you can escape them. They all have their target audience who they have specifically designed the ad for. And of course they are selling their product. This is a multi billion dollar industry and the advertiser’s study all the ways that they can attract the person’s attention. One way that is used the most and is in some ways very controversial is use of sex to sell products. For me to analyze this advertisement I used the rhetorical triangle, as well as ethos, pathos, and logos.
Sex sells a common phrase which turns out to be very truthful and also the title of Rodger Streitmatter's book, Sex Sells! The Medias Journey from Repression to Obsession. It seems like no other human act drives "buying behavior" as much as sex appeal does. Therefore advertisers manipulate this human drive and than offer their products as a path of love, beauty and desirability which is their main purpose of advertising. In other words the main purpose of advertising is to sell products and what advertisers must do to get people to buy these products is to make products desirable to the chosen target consumers. The pioneering of bringing prurience to advertising was Calvin Klein, starting with women's jeans going then to men's underwear and ending up with perfume for both sexes at the end. Perfume advertising is a large contributor to sex appeal. In both ads for Opium and Dolce & Gabbana perfumes advertisers use sexual seduction and influence to sell their product. They use sex appeal to grab our attention and play with our fears and desires and they manipulate us by fulfilling our erotic fantasies and dreams.
In this particular advertisement, they are selling a very sleek attractive car. The advertisement was in the open road, with an attractive blonde woman wearing a bikini. There are no beaches around, she is not going for a swim, she is just there to look good. All of this quotes say, “The Pursuit of Perfection”. This ad is obviously selling both sex. The beautiful woman in the bikini is suggesting that with this car, you automatically get girls of this caliber. Almost as if it is all inclusive, including her. Most people consider the public display of sex or suggestive things taboo. People by nature are attracted to things that are “off limits”. This is an advertising tactic of taking things that are normally considered bad or taboo and making them acceptable and desirable. This is a truly effective tactic, based on the fact that rebellion sells, people want what they can not have. In the “Selling of Rebellion”, Leo states, “The central message here is very serious and strongly antisocial: We should all rebel against authority, social order, propriety, and rules of any kind. “Obey” and “Rules” are bad (Leo,198). This is saying that people will want to do something that is taboo just because it is “off limits” and it feels good to do something people tell say you cannot. All of their models put on the sex appeal for all commercials and magazines. That is what helps them sell. Women look at those ads and see those girls floating on clouds like angels and feel they could feel the same if they wore that purple bra or red underwear.
