Diversity Makes Us Better CEOs are pledging to take action for inclusion in business and for our greater community. By Jim Powers Diversity used to be considered just the “right thing to do.” But in my experience, intentionally building a diverse workforce reveals a much deeper impact. An inclusive workplace – one in which people feel they belong and to which they can bring the richness of their experiences to work every day – is imperative for any organization that wants to succeed in the global marketplace. At Crowe Horwath LLP, we know that taking care of our clients and the people who take care of our clients leads to success and growth, not only for the firm itself, but also for our clients and our people. In order to thrive and survive, diversity and inclusion must be a core aspect of who we are and who we want to be. Diversity leads to better client service, highly engaged people, and vital innovation. With diversity, client service is better and clients are more engaged. My personal experience is that more diverse client teams are often the most successful. In order to deliver valuable solutions for our clients, we need an increasingly diverse workforce. Commitment to diversity and inclusion needs to go beyond a simple head shake in agreeing that it’s important. I believe it takes a “thousand acts a day” to create meaningful and sustainable change. Formal programs and structures are necessary, but to me, the real action happens every day in every interaction that takes place across the organization. Every person must seek to understand a perspective or life experience different from his or her own, and in turn, use that knowledge to create an environment in which every individual’s uniqueness matters. Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
Gender, racial, and ethnic diversity means different things to different people. Some believe that diversity is about quotas, and affirmative action. Others believe that diversity is something that will happen on its own with out intervention. Some experts who study diversity, however, believe that diversity is not something that should be left up to chance. It is important, therefore, for organizations to take action to encourage and foster diversity in the workplace (Clarke, 1995, p. 13).
Diversity management efforts are based on a voluntary commitment to accept each individual’s uniqueness and to respect and learn from individual differences. In fact, diversity management efforts require a great deal of commitment particularly since it includes more than just image based differences (Cole, Salimath). Because it includes all differences and actively works to change prejudicial attitudes and beliefs, diversity management is the perfect complement to affirmative action. Together they can create an inclusive society that is race- and gender-conscious. Being race- and gender-conscious will highlight each individual difference which will facilitate acceptance without judgment and insensitivity.
Everyone in their lifetime have been ignorant to other race at least once in their lifetime. This comes from the stereotypes of each race. Such as “ all black people eat watermelon and love fried chicken” or “ all Latinos are immigrants and work for little pay”. Without having experience with other race, individuals tend to stick to with what they know and confront people with knowledge based off of stereotypes.
