Just as a car needs gasoline to make it run, a body needs a healthy intake of food to develop properly. I am sure you or someone you know has been on a diet. The question though is why? Diets are when people restrict the amount of food they consume. There are many different diets out there that are meant for people to reach their weight loss goals. Many overweight or obese individuals use dieting in combination with physical exercise to lose weight. A quick weight loss program might sound good at the time, but it is now time to discover the truth behind dieting. A lot of people feel pressured to lose weight and try different types of diets. Some are at an unhealthy weight and need to pay closer attention to their eating and exercise habits. Some play sports and want to be in top physical condition. Others may think they would look and feel better if they lost a few pounds. Some people may diet because they think they are supposed to look a certain way. Actors and actresses are thin, and very thin models show off most fashions. In reality, this look is unrealistic for most people. For many dieters the cost of giving up the fattening lifestyle for good seems impossible, so they opt for the quick fix. Most people are motivated to change the way they look instead of focusing on their health such as reducing their risk of diabetes or heart disease. They are more concerned about their body image and looking good for a party, spring break, reunion, or other important events. She started off just like most people do when they start a diet, by consuming fewer calories every day than she originally consumed before the diet. She worked her butt off in the gym and had this plan going for a few months. Once satisfied with her weight, she started eating like she did before she started the diet and within a few weeks had gained all the weight back. The question is why? Well, dieting may seem like the answer, but the truth is that dieting will lead to failure and cause a person’s health to become worse. One can follow his or her diet plan perfectly, so how is it possible that someone gains all his or her weight back and even more sometimes? One reason it 's difficult to keep weight off is because there is a metabolic overcompensation for weight loss. If you decrease your body mass by ten percent, you would expect your metabolic rate to decrease by ten percent, but it actually slows down more than that, by about eleven to fifteen percent (Gretchen 2). To put it into easier terms, dieting lowers the base metabolic rate, which means you can live on less food. Therefore, when you return to your normal food intake which was already too high, you put on weight even faster than before and will probably end up heavier than before the diet.
