Are We Safe? If you were to walk into a typical school what would you see? You would probably see students, teachers, a resource officer, and school materials. Most students are not as safe as they could be at school. Extra steps can make a school safer. Schools protect students, but to a certain extent. You may think how can a student but not safe enough? School systems are there to help prepare a student for a better future. In school you are allowed to go do things on your own. This at times causing no adult supervision which can be dangerous. An article from School Safety: Should schools employ controversial safety measures- such as metal-detector checks and random sweeps with drug-sniffing dogs- in order to combat school violence points out that “[m]aintaining a civilized environment in buildings filled with hundreds of young people is no easy task, school officials say, and a certain amount of aggressive behavior is inevitable.” To put it another way, safety for all students is hard to do, even when there is an official there paid to help
Furthermore, educational institutions are suppose to emphasize learning and teaching- it is children grow and learn more about the world each day. However today's educational institutions mostly rely on punishment, violence, and misbehavior. Guided by the mass increase of school shooting and reports of increase in school violence, schools around the world have recently adopted revolutionary solution and prevention methods.
The document provides, “Studies show that metal detectors and armed guards can increase stress levels in students.” (Dewitt, Helping kids feel safe and secure at school). Children deal with enough pressure at school already and adding more security measures can cause them to stress out and make them become even more worrisome, which stress can hurt them in the long run and their brains have yet to fully
In light of recent acts of violence in the nation’s schools, school safety and security have become a hot topic. However, the issue of school safety goes beyond student violence. It includes property damage, theft, and anything else that concerns the overall well being of schools. While it is important to create a safe environment in schools it is also necessary to make sure students feel comfortable in this atmosphere. The security can not be so overbearing that it becomes a negative tactic that gets in the way of the students main objective, learning. Barely noticeable cameras, ID cards, and security guards without uniforms can help generate this safe, but comfortable learning environment. On the other hand metal detectors and mini police forces may be a little too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, or even modern prisons. School security should not be overbearing or obtrusive where it gets in the way of a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning in the nation’s schools.
Which can be having armed officers walk though halls, making sure the school is safe from any harm that could potentially happen.
Trigger warnings? Some may say necessary while others think of it as people being weak. Imagine sitting in a class and the topic at hand is the war. The professor without giving any warning decides to show a video of the gruesome war. Little did they know in their class sits a student who has just returned from the war and wanted to push their life forward. By not giving this warning, the student freaked out and caused a whole disruption. They managed to calm him down and tired to continue the lesson. Now would you be comfortable to continue the lesson after a huge disruption, or do you think that even a little warning in the beginning of class could have prevented this? Trigger warnings help even in the smallest ways. Trigger warnings are
Its hard to believe that there isn’t enough money out there to increase school safety, but there is enough money that the government is able to cut down on taxes. Tax payers pay for campaigns, but why doesn’t our taxes go off to help make schools safer for our children? Students should not be afraid to attend school. School should be a safe environment where teenagers can be teenagers and not feel intimidated. It is true that due to the positive learning atmosphere, schools have been regarded as a safe place for many years. Even today students and parents believe that schools are safe. If violence is increasing in youth culture, schools would be considered a dangerous place, but yet it remains known as secure. In addition, security has increased tremendously, within airports, major league sporting events, and upgraded police surveillance at American schools. Knowing this a logical assumption would be that violence has decreased. However, in my opinion, youth’s culture is changing and as a result violence is rising.

The issue of school safety has become a controversial topic in the United States, due to tragic acts of violence occurring on a daily basis. American citizens should never have to cope with the negative impact of school violence, no matter how often they hear about the tragedies (Jones, "Parents" 1). In the past, schools were viewed as a safe place for children to get an education. Recently, the concern over violence in schools has taken a toll on many parents, school administrators, and legislatures (Eckland 1). Studies have shown that there are over 3 million acts of violence in American public schools each year. Not all occurrences are serious and deadly, but they occur on a daily basis throughout our country (Jones, “School” 6). This has caused many parents to worry about the well-being of their children while they are in class. This has also led to an increase in questions and concerns by parents and guardians. Many people have asked, “What are you doing about safety and security on my child’s campus” (Schimke 2). School violence is the cause of elevated worry and fear for their children, and school districts should enforce better security.
Global security is an extraordinarily imperative idea when it comes to public safety. The purpose of global security is to protect the interests of the public. When viewing this through the lens of public and private relationships, it is effortless to see how the two walk hand in hand when it comes to trying to achieve global security. Global security is a relevant concept because the people of the United States need to be protected at all costs. Along with protecting the public, the government also needs to protect the interests of itself. To achieve global security by way of protecting the public, the government works endlessly to ensure public safety.
