According to the article it states that many of the "black and brown children first experience with the police violence is in a school building. It shows you that (SRO's) were bought into schools and communities to help against drugs, gangs, and weapons. This explains why Security Officers would be a good idea to be in scools and in the community.
Thesis: School Resource officers should be allowed in school classrooms to help keep students in order, keep students from being bullied, provide a safe learning environment, and to allow teachers to actually teach.

A teacher’s most important duty is to protect the students they are in charge of. This duty includes both reasonably protecting students from harm and, when a student is harmed, reporting it to the proper authorities (Gooden, Eckes, Mead, McNeal, & Torres, 2013, pp. 103-109). There have been many court cases that reiterate this duty of school staff. One such case is Frugis v. Bracigliano (2003) where many staff at a school failed in their duty to protect students and allowed abuse to continue for years.
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
Not only does the presence of police officers allow for better security in the school and safety of both students and faculty, it has many other benefits. Having police officers present in these settings allows for increased knowledge of both the law and the consequences of breaking the law. These programs also allow for growth of relationships between the students and the officers. The police-school programs use officers as sources of information and counselors for the student’s aid. The programs also helped in improving communicating between juveniles and police officers. A combination of having better relationships and communication allows for individuals to feel comfortable opening up and reporting issues such as – abuse, neglect, etc. Some police-school programs tackle more specific problems in today’s society (e.g. bullying or drug use). These programs are set up much like any other liaison program but primarily focus on preventing bullying/drugs and providing juveniles with the consequences of participating in these actions. Personally, I support the police-school consultant/liaison program idea and could give numerous pros as to why I do. The issue of school safety has become a controversial topic in the United States, due to tragic acts of violence occurring on a daily basis. American citizens should never have to cope with the negative impact of school violence, no matter how often they hear about the tragedies (Jones, "Parents" 1). In the past, schools were viewed as a safe place for children to get an education. Recently, the concern over violence in schools has taken a toll on many parents, school administrators, and legislatures (Eckland 1). Studies have shown that there are over 3 million acts of violence in American public schools each year.
