During hiring process, employers use a wide variety of tests to choose the best candidate for their company. These tests are used to eliminate candidates that are not fit for the company. The personality test, is one of many that is being used in many organizations as a means of making a hiring decision. It has been studied that personality traits predict success in job performance. Having the ability to judge the candidate before hiring can ultimately forecast how fit the employee is for the company. Personality tests uses conscientiousness, openness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotionally stable as predictors of job performance. A research investigates perceived selection ratio may affect faking personality test. The higher the selection ratio, being closer to 1, the less selective and the lower the ratio, being closer to 0, the more selective the hiring decision. One can predict that the lower the selection ratio the more opportunity for the candidate to fake the personality test. The study consisted of 150 undergraduate participants split into two groups, half of the participants were given a test with obvious items and other half given more subtle items. Each group of participants were randomly selected in three groups of 25; low, moderate, and high selection ratio. In this study done by Chet Robie, his “Results showed no statistically significant mean differences between personality scale scores across levels of perceived selection ratios for each personality inventory” (Robie,2006, pg.1233). This study shows, overall score on obvious items in test and selection ratio category and overall score on subtle items in test and selection ratio category; both are not less than 0.05 thus not significant. Participants didn’t care if they have a higher chance of getting hired or lower chance, in either situation participants didn’t take the opportunity to fake the personality test. The Myers and Briggs Analysis is a series of questions that when answered are examined and grouped together in order to determine the personalities of those taking this test. This particular test can result in sixteen different outcomes or types of personalities, which is determined by four different categories that judge if you are introverted or extroverted, use your senses or your intuition, your choice to think or use your feelings, and finally if you are judgmental or perceptive. These series of questions are designed to judge our personalities and help us to determine which career pathways we will be most suited for based on our personality traits and abilities to work well with others, which is important for our future decisions.
The bases of this paper will be based on the results that I had obtained when I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. The results that I had obtained was that I was determined to be an ENFJ. I will go into depth about letter and how each represents that a specific aspect of my personality. The results that I had received were not what I had expected, but the more I read about the trait the more I realized how it suited me. I will also talk about the information that I had found useful from the book, Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personalities Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger, which gave me insight on how to interact with other personality types especially in the work environment. The information that I absorbed from the personality test and from the book will go into use in my personal and work life so that both environments will be cohesive and peaceful.
According to Barrick and Mount (2005), one of the benefits of utilizing personality tests in the selection process is that it is helpful in predicting work behaviors. The benefit of measuring the Big Five Personality traits is that it aids in measuring specific job performance measures. These measures include motivation, interpersonal interaction, and the ability to influence others (as cited in Barrick, & Mount, 2005). Additionally, personality tests have the ability to predict various factors related to career success (Barrick, & Mount, 2005).

To prepare for this paper, I took personality and academic tests. I listened to lectures, and researched papers. The purpose of this paper is to get to know myself and familiarize myself with the jobs that suit me. “There are no good or bad personalities. There are positive and negative traits of each personality. Positive traits carried to the extreme become negative traits.” (McConnell)
For many years, there has been a debate in which whether or not personality plays a role in the workplace, in areas like “teamwork, job-fit, leadership, service, sales, and overall performance and satisfaction” (Furnham, 2008). Personality is an important topic for human resources and training professionals to consider during the hiring process and employee development. Employees’ personalities might have a significant impact on an organization’s performance. Therefore, I believe using personality tests in a workplace is necessary.
I found the results of my self-assessments to be a very insightful and accurate description of myself. The results of the learning styles test and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II are very valuable for examining my personality traits and learning style and making improvements as needed.
In the vast and detailed world of psychology, there are a variety of different tests you can participate in. For example, you can participate in aptitude, verbal or numerical reasoning, and psychometric tests. These tests assess on a variety of different situations such as: behaviors, abilities and intelligence. Personality tests, a common and favored test, measure things such as: behavioral style, opinions, motivators, personal values and career interests. Most often, people complain or disagree with the score of some areas on their personality test; however, there are no right or wrong answers. After completing this personality test and reviewing the results, I found that the overall scoring accurately described me in most areas. The Big Five Personality test scores in five different areas involving openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.
Managers seem to inherit a strong trust in the authority of personality traits to forecast behavior at the work area. If managers thought that situations resolute behavior, they would hire individuals almost at random and assemble the situation correctly. But the employee selection procedure in most establishments places a great deal of importance on how applicants achieve in interviews and on examine through which the personality of a person can be achieved and the task distribution can be much easy varying upon the type of personality (Robbins, Odendaal and Roodt, 2001)
The Big Five personality factors are the modern way of describing someone’s feelings, actions, and traits. This new factor map, improving Hans and Sybil Eysenck’s two-dimensional map which consisted of a stable/unstable axis and an introverted/extroverted axis, has five different factors. They are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism and everyone can be described using these five criteria. This paper will discuss and interpret my results from a Big Five personality test including how accurate I believe it is and how this might change in the future.
Discussed below are different researchers’ arguments and explanations on how personality predicts employee performance. This essay will explore both negative and positive ways in which personality can predict the performance, as well as explaining what personality is. Past research has “demonstrated that personality constructs are associated with work performance, with some traits like conscientiousness predicting success around jobs. Secondly, an evaluation of an employee’s personality helps the manager in his leadership approach of that employee. Thirdly, perceptions can be the deciding factor of whether or not a candidate is hired or promoted.
