Personality disorders are a group of mental conditions that are characterized by maladaptive patterns of behavior. An individual with a personality disorder will have an unhealthy and rigid pattern of functioning, thinking, and behaving. In addition, he/she has a difficulty perceiving and relating to people and situations. Because of all these, these individuals encounter problems and limitations in dealing with personal issues, relationships, school and even work. Personality disorders are prevalent in teenage years all the way through early adulthood. The etiology of personality disorders remains unknown, nonetheless, childhood experiences and genes are said to play a role in causing these mental illnesses. This is from a traditional belief point of view whereby, it is believed that, personality disorders stem from a dysfunctional early environment whereby one is prevented from evolving the adaptive patterns of response, perception, and defense. There are a number of factors that are linked to personality disorders in childhood, for instance sexual abuse, emotional abuse, negligence, physical abuse, and when a child is bullied. In addition, there are emotional/behavioral factors that are also linked to personality disorders which are; bullying others, truanting, prolonged periods of misery, being suspended or expelled from school, and deliberate self harm. All the se factors are linked to personality disorders however; there is an evidence based link between genetic factors and personality disorders that is growing over time (Reichborn-Kjennerud 2010). Personality disorders are conditions whereby an individual differs significantly from an average person. This is in terms of how they perceive, feel, think, or relate to others. ... ... middle of paper ... ...l personality disorder whereby a qualified psychotherapist is involved. Most therapies focus on the patient’s emotions and how he/she is to be helped to live like other normal people in the society. All patients need mental health from qualified professionals in order to be able to live a normal life, or else, they remain dangerous to their family members, and the community at large. An individual's personality is a combination of everything such as their temperament, their charm, and how they handle certain situations. How their personality is developed is a combination of two major factors; the first being genetics. Some characteristics can be inherited from the parents. This could be things such as their attitude and disposition. The next major factor is environment. Things such as the type of atmosphere a person is raised in, and whether it had a positive or negative effect on them is has a influence on their personality. Also things such as huge events or relationships could form a person's personality. According to the the Mayo Clinic’s definition of APSD, it starts to develop at a young age but cannot be diagnosed

Diagnosing a patient with a personality disorders where often evaluations done by a clinician. The clinician would listen to the importance of interpersonal experiences and observing the patients behavior in a consulting room (Westen, 2001). This was normally done in one session, if the patient informed the clinician of harming himself. The clinician would diagnose the patient as a borderline personality disorders.
Personality Disorders are becoming very common within humans as we age. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) states that to have a formal diagnosis of any personality disorder you must see a doctor and have various test done with the final results from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The following movies; “Welcome to Me” and “What happened, Miss Simone?” are about two women who experienced personality disorders, one being fictional and one being non-fiction. In these two films there are several scenes and stories of how this disorder altered their everyday life and actions.

Personality is a branch in psychology that studies the variation of personality among individuals and their differences in characteristic patterns of feeling, behaving and thinking. My first source (group A) comes from the APA (American Psychological Association). The topic What causes personality disorders is on how "research suggests that genetics, abuse and other factors contribute to the development of obsessive compulsive, narcissistic or other personality disorders." My second source (group B) comes from TIME Magazine. The article How the Month You Were Born Affects Your Personality, According to Science is about how the season you were born in can cause clinical issues more than others.
Personality is a branch of scientific discipline that studies temperament and its variation among people. It is a dynamic and a set of characteristics possessed by their atmosphere, cognitions, emotions, motivations and behaviours in various things. Personality conjointly refers to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments and behaviour consistently exhibited over time that powerfully influences one’s exceptions, self-perceptions, values and attitudes. It also predicts human reactions to different folks, problems and stress.
A personality disorder is characterized by an individual having “a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving” (Psych Central 2014). If the phrase “unhealthy patterns of thinking” is as confusing to others as it was to me the first time I was presented with this principle, it may be hard to grasp the severity of these ways of thinking. Because of this I will present a few short samples of unhealthy thinking patterns. One of the most detrimental in my opinion would be thinking in absolutes, or thinking of situations in an all-or-nothing mentality; as in, when a few things in my life do not work the way I hoped that they would, I would be assuming that nothing is going my way, putting me in a worse place mentally/emotionally than the situation itself had put me in. Another is to think illogically about past events in terms of “knowing that these experiences would have worked out better or more to my favor if I had magically become smarter, more socially adept, happier…” and so on (Common Unhealthy Thought Patterns 2010). Suffering from these thoughts and patterns of thinking is hard enough in the first place, but to some these are not considered abnormal thinking patterns. Add the behavioral and functional abnormalities on top of having an unclear mind like this and it becomes much easier to see why these people
Personality disorders have a huge effect on a person’s life. These disorders can turn a normal person into a maniac due to something that the person cannot physically control. They did not choose this lifestyle, the lifestyle chose them. The only treatments are psychotherapy, medications or hospitalization. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2014). The best way to know when things like this occur is to be educated about it because without education, there will be no awareness. Education is the key to awareness and awareness is the key to getting help.
The etiology of personality disorders is important to understand as one of the factors in finding the origins. At birthday, babies show their own personality and can prove that siblings have difference in their personalities. This is the influence of temperament. Temperament is part of personality that is influenced by genetics, which can be present very early in life. Identical twins for example can show differences in temperament. Therefore, when there is a disruption of temperance and experience it ca...
Personality Disorders are something that is not rare to hear about. Everyone has there own definition of what a personality disorder is, but what do the experts say? According to the staff at Mayo Clinic a personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving. A person with a personality disorder has trouble perceiving and relating to situations and to people. This causes significant problems and limitations in relationships, social encounters, work and school.
The personality disorder that I choose to compare to the definition of health that I mentioned in reflection paper one was under the category of anxious personality disorders. Individuals with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are usually preoccupied with order, control, and perfection that they lose all sense of productivity and openness. An individual with this personality disorder can be rigid in determining their morals, beliefs, values, and ethics and reluctant to make a final decision because it may not be the right one. Individuals set challenging standards for others and themselves, which can cause them to be unwilling to work with others because they are persuaded that others are careless and unable to do their job correctly.
