Personality Disorders: What you should know. A way to think about a personality disorder is to think about someone who is complex because personality disorders are not a simple health concern. There is so much involved with these disorders. A person’s life can revolve around a personality disorder due to the fact that it is a mental issue. (Mayo Clinic, 2014). There is a stigma around the idea of mental disorder. People assume that a person with any type of mental disorder is dangerous or harmful. It will always be this way until the media changes how they portray mental disorders. (Arboleda, and Stuart, 2012) Did you know that in the overall population personality disorders affect more than 10% of people? (Lariviere, Desrosieres, Tousignant, and Boyer, 2010). Because this can happen to anyone, personality disorders need more awareness about what it is. What is it? A personality disorder is a form of a mental disease which can affect a person’s way of thinking, how they function and their behaviors. (Mayo Clinic, 2014).Because personality disorders can develop during the most crucial time of a person’s life; adolescence or adulthood, a person will have trouble interacting with others and maintaining a social life. As a result, people with a personality disorder will have trouble in school, work or any other social environment. This anti-social tendency will seem normal to the people with the disorders because they do not realize how much it affects their lives. (Lariviere et al, 2010). The ten personality disorders have been classified into three groups; Cluster A, B, and C. (Mayo Clinic, 2014) Classification Cluster A: odd and eccentric disorders. (Esterberg, Goulding, and Walker, 2010) This cluster would be considered the cl... ... middle of paper ... ...teristics of Obsessive Compulsive personality disorder can range from close attention to details to trying to achieve perfection. (Gordon, Salkovskis, Oldfield & Carter, 2013). As with a lot of the personality disorders, there are no real causes. There may be genetics, environment or cultural influences. (Noppen, N.D) Conclusion Personality disorders have a huge effect on a person’s life. These disorders can turn a normal person into a maniac due to something that the person cannot physically control. They did not choose this lifestyle, the lifestyle chose them. The only treatments are psychotherapy, medications or hospitalization. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2014). The best way to know when things like this occur is to be educated about it because without education, there will be no awareness. Education is the key to awareness and awareness is the key to getting help.

Personality, defined by Merriam-Webster, is a set of enduring behavioral and mental traits that distinguish human beings from one another. Therefore, a personality disorder “is a type of mental illness in which you have trouble perceiving and relating to situations and to people—including yourself” (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.

Since the 1800s, treatment methods for mental illness have developed significantly worldwide. From electrotherapy to modern practices like psychotherapy, treatment for mental disorders has greatly progressed as scientists and psychologists learn more information on the causes of mental illness and the best therapy for each particular disease. The past 200 years mark the most defined era since the beginning of humans for the progression of treatment for mental illness. Not only has treatment improved for the mentally ill, but also the perception of mental illness has greatly changed and will continue to do so as more is learned about the human mind.
In today’s world, mental illness is still looked upon as a very bad thing and the negative views of mental illness are common within the employees. Most of the time, people assume that employees who suffer from mental illness are often seen as weird, defensive, and hard to talk to. Generally, concepts about mental illness tend to be subjective, leading to difficulties in defining mental illness. One article has described mental illness as, “ mentally distorted, mad, or crazy” and the degree of mental illness varies depending from person to person (Corrigan et al. 2010, p. 909). The following essay is based on the topic ‘Mental Illness as an Emerging Discourse’ and the article ‘Employee Mental Illness: Managing the Hidden Epidemic’ was the main article that was analysed and used in the essay to discuss the topic. The analysis has been divided into two parts which are covered equally by the study group members.

psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and mental health nurses). The profile only differed in one regard, the sex of the patient may have been either male or female. The researchers asked the 46 professionals to assess the patient as having no personality disorder traits, specific personality disorder traits, or a specific (DSM-III) personality disorder(s) (Adler, Drake, & Teague, 1990). Although the clinical profile fit the criteria for several personality disorders from the then DSM-III, BPD and NPD were the most prevalent diagnoses of the pseudo-patient (roughly half), while one-quarter of the professionals diagnosed the pseudo-patient with HPD (Adler, Drake, & Teague, 1990). More importantly, the majority of the NPD diagnoses were assigned to the male pseudo-patient while the majority of HPD diagnoses were assigned to the female pseudo-patient (Adler, Drake, & Teague, 1990). Although it can be argued that the criteria for personality disorders have changed three times since 1990, a more recent study has shown the existence of sexism in the diagnoses of personality disorders such as BPD and APD (Samuel & Widiger,
Personality takes many shapes and forms and is affected by many factors. My understanding of personality is simply a genetic and environmentally determined set of psychological traits that influence our reactions in the world around us. Genetic because our parents possess a certain set of psychological personality traits that we tend to have in common with them so therefore in my opinion there are heritable personality traits. Personality is environmental because we each have our own separate experiences in the world and these experiences help form our unique personality. Neo-Freudians such as Jung have given us a wide array of ideas of how they believe personality is developed and formatted. Jung in particular has a very interesting
